Table Manners for Dogs “Aw, what a cute little puppy. Look he’s begging. Here boy.” The puppy is fed a tidbit from the plate in reward for his cute antics and whimsical brown-eyed plea for a taste of whatever he can smell.
  • Does your dog have a problem with drooling when you are eating?
  • Does your pet habitually beg for food?
  • Is the animal overweight? These problems are common amongst many dogs and there can be a variety of causes. There may be medical reasons, or a predisposition of a breed of dog, that causes one or all of these problems. About these, I have no expertise. I suggest that your Veterinarian be contacted for health issues, especially for things that endanger your pet’s health, like suffering from excess weight. However, there is one thing that I do know about, which can cause all three of the listed symptoms. That is, a dog being fed treats from the dinner table. This is a scenario so often repeated that it has become quite a common practice for the family pet to live by the dinner table during meal times. They partake of slyly diverted green vegetables from the children. From adults they receive choice tidbits, because one cannot stand the whining and drooling, or the big brown eyes that accuse you of starving them.

    Manners and Etiquette
by Cara Bafile, EducationWorld.com Whether they use a formal curriculum or simply take advantage of serendipitous opportunities, teachers are taking good manners off the back burner. Although modeling excellent etiquette always is important, these educators say that focusing on manners in the classroom is not an option it's a must. "What I do now is just a carryover from raising seven children," Delores Hawkins told Education World. "Since I attest to traditions and values that I feel are necessary to maintain an orderly and civilized society, it was always my goal to teach my children the proper way to act." A retired elementary teacher from Maryland, it was Hawkins' role as mother to four girls and three boys that led her to a second career as an "etiquette guru!" Years ago, with aspirations of entering the Pillsbury Bake-Off, she created a cookie that was a great hit with her eldest daughter. It became her favorite, and Hawkins planned to name it for her. "That created a small problem because we have seven children, and the other six wanted to know why she could have a special cookie when they did not," recalled Hawkins. To keep the peace, she created six additional cookies and the Cookie Bunch was born.

    Minding Miss Manners
Advice for teaching your children good behavior
by Patricia Sullivan When it comes to teaching children the basics of good manners, one name quickly comes to mind for advice: etiquette columnist and author Miss Manners, otherwise known as Judith Martin. When "etiquette-free children" are sent into the educational system, it causes a terrible situation, according to Martin. These children disrupt lesson plans, causing teachers to stop what they are doing to reprimand the child who is behaving poorly and remind him or her to be courteous. This means that teachers spend less time teaching and more time disciplining. Teaching by example and reminders
Because children tend to copy what they see and hear around them, the best way to teach good behavior is "by example and nagging," she says. Martin is quick to clarify that by nagging, she doesn't mean scolding; she means reminders. So, strike the phrase "Do as I say, not as I do" from your speech. Remember, the way you react to a rude sales clerk, telephone solicitor who interrupts your family's dinner, or driver who cuts you off on the road sets an example for your children. Martin says that so many families eat on the run nowadays that when parents do sit down with their children, they're often surprised to find out that the children do not use good table manners. If, for instance, your extended family is gathered at the dining room table for Thanksgiving dinner and your child begins talking with his or her mouth full of food, resist the urge to shout "Shut your mouth while you're eating!" Instead, be polite yourself and say something along the lines of, "Grandma and grandpa are eager to hear what you have to say, but please don't talk with your mouth full of food." Keep in mind that reminders work without embarrassing your child.

Enhancing Academic Experiences for Kansas English Language Learners
Great Pre-K to 12 Session Strand at KATESOL 2004
KATESOL is the professional organization in the state of Kansas for ESL teachers and others who work with English language learners from Pre-K to 12 as well as adult and college intensive English programs. One challenge for KATESOL has been to organize the annual conference so that topics and issues of relevance to all constituencies are reflected in the conference program. The 2004 KATESOL Conference, March 12-13, in Hays, Kansas, will come very close to achieving this goal. In addition to a number of sessions of interest to adult educators and those who teach in intensive programs at universities, there are also presentations of relevance directly to public school teachers and administrators, as well as teacher educators. It is hard to imagine anyone who has not heard of Dr. Stephen Krashen, who speaks at Friday's opening ceremony, on the evening of March 12th. Dr. Krashen's research and tireless efforts on behalf of language learners are an inspiration to every ESL, foreign language and regular classroom teacher, instructor and professor. In addition to Dr. Krashen's Friday plenary, there will be a presentation by Dr. Andy Tompkins, the Kansas Commissioner of Education. Dr. Tompkins will report on the academic performance of English language learners in Kansas public schools, based on data from state assessments. He will also invite KATESOL members to collaborate with the state in working to enhance the educational experiences of the growing numbers of culturally and linguistically diverse children in Kansas.

Teaching Children Good Manners and Civility

Are you still hoping against hope to receive a thank you note for that graduation gift you gave your son's friend last year? Are you disgusted watching your child's friends eat at your home? No napkins, greasy fingers on furniture, coasters pushed aside and wet drinks leaving rings on antique tables! Are you left speechless when the person on your right at dinner or lunch suddenly takes over the coffee cup or water glass meant for you? Have you noticed that some restaurants (not only Chinese ones) have dispensed with providing a knife? Do you wonder if you are indeed invisible every time teens try to walk through you at doorways, escalators and elevators? Do you cringe every time you see men wearing caps in restaurants at lunch or dinner?
The only thing worse than ill-mannered children and teens are ill-mannered adults. Sadly, by adulthood, bad manners are deeply ingrained in a person. An ill-mannered individual does not realize the importance of teaching children good manners nor is capable of it. Teaching children good manners and civility is a 24/7 job. Parents who neglect this part of their children's upbringing are actually doing a terrible disservice to their own offspring. These children are bound to find themselves in adult situations where good manners are an important element for success and a better quality of life.

      Board Etiquette
This is a topic that I decided to approach for several reasons. First of all, I've been a victim of failing to remember my manners myself. Secondly I'm so tired of seeing people go crazy and flood the boards with useless sarcastic drivel every time they come across a topic they don't agree with. And most importantly, I've noticed that nearly everyone, big time professionals included, seems to have a problem retaining their professionalism when confronted with "unpleasantries". This article is meant to help teach everyone about being kind to one another and how to keep your cool in a harsh situation. In any business, it is very important to remain level headed and to be completely professional at all times. I can't tell you how many well respected webmasters have ended up losing their reputations over a board dispute. Dec 14-20, 1998 Silicon Valley may lead the way in jobs and money, but some say it could use training in manners and etiquette.
And those who make their money teaching this once-basic skill are finding business is booming as everyone scrambles to learn their P's and Q's. And baby boomers-who once rejected such things- are contributing to the resurgence. "There is a renaissance going on," said Sue Fox the founder of the Workshoppe in Saratoga. "People are well educated but they want that little bit of edge that goes with etiquette" Ms. Fox started here business in 1995 after working in sales and marketing at Apple Computer Inc. for 10 years. During her years in the corporate world, she realized many people lacked proper social dining skills and decided to start a business to teach people etiquette. She hooked up with former partner Lindy James, leased a downtown Saratoga space and began teaching courses in grooming and self-esteem to children and teens. She soon noticed that the parents were asking just as many questions as their kids, and realized there was a demand for adult etiquette training.

Stephen L. Carter Publishes Civility: Manners, Morals, and the Etiquette of Democracy Civility: Manners, Morals, and the Etiquette of Democracy is a poignant offering to anyone interested in that dimension of democracy that deals with civic virtues. Indeed, the book serves largely as a normative treatise on the manner by which individuals should behave in a democracy. Carter, a professor of law at Yale University in Connecticut, wrote Civility as the second in a trilogy on what he calls “pre-political” elements of good character, noting, in that regard, that, “we should all struggle to exemplify them, whatever our philosophical or partisan differences” (p. xi). (He began the trilogy with Integrity [1996], and has yet to publish the final installment.) In other words, it’s Carter’s belief that character comes before politics or ideology, that the manner by which an individual comports him- or herself is as important, (if not slightly more so), than the substantive pursuits in which he or she engages. If it is true that the social cohesion upon which democracy, (as an organising construct), and democracies, (as free societies), rely is largely a function of an individual’s attitudes and behaviour, then it is understandable why Carter focuses on civility. But, why does he feel that an etiquette of democracy is necessary? His answer is found at the outset of the book:

Guide to Finnish customs and manners
Written for Virtual Finland by Olli Alho, director of Programmes Finnish Broadcasting Company Finland is an easy country to visit. Finnish customs and manners are clearly European, with only a few national variations, and attitudes are liberal. There is very little chance of a visitor committing fundamental social gaffes or breaches of etiquette that would fatally damage relations between himself and his hosts. Such breaches are viewed by Finns with equanimity if committed by their own countrymen and with understanding or amusement if committed by foreigners. Codes of behaviour are fairly relaxed, and reputations — good or bad — are built up over time as the result of personal actions rather than conforming to certain norms or standards. It is difficult in Finland to make or break a reputation on a single occasion. Generally speaking, Finland is a country where considerable weight is attached to the spoken word — words are chosen carefully and for the purpose of delivering a message. Indeed, there are very few other culture-specific considerations that visitors need be aware of. Finns place great value on words, which is reflected in the tendency to say little and avoid ‘unnecessary’ small talk. As the Chinese proverb puts it, “Your speech should be better than silence, if not, be silent.”
