As they listen to the news stories, it is important for students to recognize that the media portrayals of Ethiopia are not always complete and that Ethiopia is, in fact, a geographically diverse country, including forests, grasslands, and the Blue Nile . This lesson will teach students about Ethiopia's different geographic regions. The Text of Strabo on LacusCurtius
As always, I am retyping the text rather than scanning it: not only to minimize errors prior to proofing, but as an opportunity for me to become intimately familiar with the work, an exercise which I heartily recommend. (Well-meaning attempts to get me to scan text, if successful, would merely turn me into some kind of machine: gambit declined.) I run a first proofing pass immediately after entering each book, so that the text of all the books is quite good already . After that, a final proofing: in the table of contents below, books whose text I believe to be completely errorfree are shown on blue backgrounds at Perseus

After a long period of disorder, the area was finally reunited in 1889 by Emperor Menelik II, who greatly expanded Ethiopia by conquest. Italy invaded in 1935 and held the country until 1941. Following the military overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie (ruled 1930-1974), a socialist state was established. The country suffered enormous hardship from war with rebels from the province of Eritrea (which declared independence in 1993) and from famine and drought. Guerrilla forces toppled the government in 1991 and subsequently established a transitional government. Addis Ababa is the capital and the largest city. Population: 66,500,000. Senamirmir: It was 30 years ago in November when you first traveled to the Afar Depression. Jon, Happy 30th Year Anniversary! Jon Kalb: Thank you. It will be a pleasure to answer your questions. Senamirmir: Are you a Texan by birth, but an Afar in spirit? Jon Kalb: Well put. I was born in Houston, which lies on a flat coastal plain. Although interesting in many ways, I much prefer the desert with all its wildness, remoteness, and challenges. In many ways the Afar (or Dankalia) is a beautiful place, hardly the "wasteland" described by many writers. Senamirmir: Would you share with us something about yourself and family? Jon Kalb: My relatives on my father's side were from Germany and Switzerland, and moved to Texas in the 1850s; my mother's family was from Ireland, Scotland, and Norway, and came to Texas in the early 1900s. Thus, you can appreciate that the U.S. is a nation of immigrants, many of whom now speak Amharic, and is the better for it. My college education began in Texas, but I moved to Washington D.C. where I graduated from American University with a B.Sc. in geology. In Washington I also worked for the Smithsonian Institution as a research assistant in the Department of Paleobiology, then later I was given a fellowship to Carnegie Institution's Geophysical Laboratory, which then led me to graduate school in geology at Johns Hopkins University. During this time, my summers and some winters were filled with gaining field experience in geology, paleontology, and archeology in Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, and the South Pacific.

IFPRI Home Media Recent Research from IFPRI Reducing Hunger, Poverty and Environmental Degradation in the Highlands Research Results: Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda ETHIOPIA KENYA UGANDA ETHIOPIA:
Effective Strategies for Reducing Hunger, Poverty, and Environmental Degradation in the Ethiopian Highlands More than 45 percent of Ethiopians live in the country's highlands, where population densities are very high. Over-population has contributed to land degradation, soil erosion, and deforestation, which are widespread problems. In turn, food shortages in the highlands of Ethiopia are endemic, and the threat of hunger is pervasive. Ethiopia's geography is varied, ranging from mountains and deserts, to fertile valleys with plentiful rainfall. These diverse conditions call for different development strategies. In some areas of Ethiopia, including large parts of the Amhara and Oromiya regions, agricultural extension programs have been very successful. By using fertilizers and improved varieties of seeds, farmers have substantially increased their crop yields, as well as household incomes. Research shows that these inputs, and access to credit, have often had a greater impact in lower rainfall areas than under high-rainfall conditions (drought-prone areas excepted). Strategies for Drought-Prone Areas
Agricultural extension focused on fertilizers and improved seeds, however, has not been as successful in areas of the country that are plagued by drought, including much of Tigray. Soils are very degraded, and rainfall is inadequate.
