Part of the mission of the Department is to ground all cadets in the liberal arts. Additionally, government majors take a multidisciplinary collation of courses leading to either of two tracks: International Affairs or Public Policy. With these twin missions, Humanities offers more core courses than any other department. Seven out of twenty-four core curriculum courses are offered through the Humanities Department: English Composition, Literature, US History, Morals and Ethics, American Government, Criminal Justice, and Maritime Law Enforcement. In addition, the department offers over forty courses for government majors, which cadets from other majors may take as electives. Advanced students may pursue tutorial and research opportunities in the specialt=""ies represented by a faculty of over twenty. Twenty to thirty percent of all cadets typically choose the Government major. After graduation, Government majors find themselves well-suited for almost any career path in the Coast Guard. Government majors are to be found commanding cutters or shore stations, heading policy offices, negotiating treaties on behalf of the US government, leading regulatory projects, flying aircraft, and much more, reflecting the maxim that a liberal undergraduate education recognizes no limits. Many Government majors go on to pursue graduate education through the Coast Guard after their first tours afloat.

ETHICS, POLITICS AND EMBRYO STEM CELL RESEARCH IN SOUTH AFRICA
Udo Schuklenk, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, Jason Lott, University of Alabama at Birmingham, United States
Abstract
Benefits of Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Finding cures for the first three highlights the most promising and immediate gains predicted from embryonic stem cell research, namely the ability to cure any disease resulting from or accompanying loss of specific cell types. New cells would be produced in the laboratory and then injected into the targeted tissue to slow and eventually halt the progression of the disease.[ii] Moreover, substantial tissue could be regenerated in vivo to restore the body to its original, pre-disease condition, as though the disease had never happened. In addition to these therapies, embryonic stem cell research may also aid patients in need of a transplant. There are currently over eighty-four thousand people waiting for an organ transplant in the United States, with little hope of success.[iii] The situation is even worse in South Africa, where only a few hundred persons donate organs each year.[iv] Initiatives intended to increase organ donation have done little to increase supply, and, ethical concerns notwithstanding[v] development of effective xenotransplantation techniques has proven disappointing, as have other approaches.[vi] Meanwhile, the demand for organs has steadily increased with no indication of decline.

Ethics Information for Special Government Employees: Emoluments Clause of the U. S. Constitution The Emoluments Clause of the United States Constitution applies to all U.S. Government employees, including Special Government Employees (SGE's). The Clause places constitutional limitations on a SGE advisory committee member's employment by a foreign government, including political subdivisions of a foreign government. This provision has particular relevance to positions with foreign universities that are government-operated rather than private institutions. United States Constitution, art. I 9, cl. 8. The Emoluments Clause applies at all times during an SGE's appointment Under the Foreign Gifts and Decorations Act, 5 U.S.C. 7342, Congress has authorized employees, including advisory committee members, to accept items from a foreign government that do not exceed minimal value (currently $305). The Act authorizes acceptance of items over minimal value when such items consist of an educational scholarship, medical treatment, or expenses for travel taking place entirely outside the United States, thus permitting hotel and meal reimbursements in the foreign country, but not airfare for flights originating or terminating in the United States. The statutory restriction on gifts over minimal value extends to the spouse and dependents of the employee.

STATEMENTS ON ETHICS
Principles of Professional Responsibility
Adopted by the Council of the American Anthropological Association May 1971
As amended through November 1986 Note: This statement of principles is not intended to supersede previous statements and resolutions of the Association. Its intent is to clarify professional responsibilities in the chief areas of professional concern to anthropologists.
Preamble
The following principles are deemed fundamental to the anthropologist's responsible, ethical pursuit of the profession.
1. Relations with those studied
In research, anthropologists' paramount responsibility is to those they study. When there is a conflict of interest, these individuals must come first. Anthropologists must do everything in their power to protect the physical, social, and psychological welfare and to honor the dignity and privacy of those studied. a. Where research involves the acquisition of material and information transferred on the assumption of trust between persons, it is axiomatic that the rights, interests, and sensitivities of those studied must be safeguarded.

UM support for traditional marriage
Standing within a culture that views divorce as commonplace and gay marriage as the new trendy cause, United Methodist delegates resoundingly announced that they "support laws in civil society that define marriage as the union of one man and one woman" by a vote of 624-184. In addition to continuing to forbid homosexual unions and making the conducting of one a chargeable offense for clergy, delegates also revised the denomination's statement on divorce so that it now states: "God's plan is for lifelong, faithful marriage. The church must be on the forefront of premarital and post-marital counseling in order to create and preserve strong marriages," the statement reads. "However, when a married couple is estranged beyond reconciliation, even after thoughtful consideration and counsel, divorce is a regrettable alternative in the midst of brokenness. We grieve over the devastating emotional, spiritual, and economic consequences of divorce for all involved and are concerned about high divorce rates."
