Rallying 'round the flag
The press as U.S. propagandists
Journalists should cut all the flag-waving and pro-war rhetoric and get back to their traditional role of observing and questioning.
by Deni Elliott On-camera reporters sport yellow ribbons, newspapers print full-color, full-page American flags. Journalists mouth military lingo and repeat upbeat U.S. government assessments as though they are objective fact. More than once, President Bush has remarked that this war "is no Vietnam." The reporting is different, that's for sure. Today's press seems as interested in supporting this war as journalists were interested in questioning the wisdom of military involvement in Vietnam 20 years ago. The media message is clear: real Americans support the war. And so newspapers across the country show that they're real Americans too and donate a page to Old Glory. The Detroit News did it because of what editor and publisher Bob Giles described as "a broad feeling of support in the community." The San Diego Union did it, according to editor Gerald Warren, because "the country is solidly behind this war," and because it's a local story for readers who have friends and relatives fighting.

Policy On Business Ethics
General Business Ethics
We are committed to the highest level of legal, ethical and moral standards in the conduct of our business, based on a fundamental belief in law, honesty, fair dealing and open competition. Every director and officer is expected to maintain and to foster these standards and has an obligation to contact the Chairman of the Board of Directors or the Chairman of the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors regarding any action that is believed to be inconsistent with these standards. This Policy on Business Ethics does not summarize all laws, rules, regulations and policies applicable to officers of the Company.
Conflicts Of Interest
All directors and officers of the Company should be scrupulous in avoiding potential conflicts of interest with regard to the Company's interests. A "conflict of interest" exists whenever an individual's private interests interfere or conflict in any way (or even appear to interfere or conflict) with the interests of the Company. A conflict situation can arise when a director or officer takes actions or has interests that may make it difficult to perform his or her Company work objectively and effectively. Conflicts of interest may also arise when a director or officer, or members of his or her family, receives improper personal benefits as a result of his or her position in the Company, whether received from the Company or a third party. Loans to, or guarantees of obligations of directors and officers and their respective family members may create conflicts of interest. Federal law prohibits loans to directors and executive officers.

The groups likely to attend include Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Common Cause, Public Citizen, Judicial Watch and Democracy 21, a spokesperson for one of the groups said. Overview
The Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) is one of several policy institutes established by neoconservatives to promote the increased role of religion in public policy. Other closely interlinked institutes include the Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD), Empower America, and Institute on Religion and Public Life. Also closely connected to these institutes are the religious programs at Freedom House and the American Enterprise Institute, whose program officers sit on the boards of these neoconservative institutes and whose programs often coincide. Established in 1976, EPPC aims “to clarify and reinforce the bond between the Judeo-Christian moral tradition and the public debate over domestic and foreign policy issues.” (1) EPPC sponsors conferences, publishes books and reports, and provides the media with policy analysis relating to its research programs. These programs are: Biotechnology and American Democracy; Catholic Studies; Constitution, Courts, and Culture; Foreign Policy; Islam and American Democracy; Jewish Studies; Religion and Media; Science, Technology, and Society; and South Asian Studies and Religious Nationalism. (2) Its board of directors includes: William Burleigh (former chairman of E.W. Scripps and director of the Hebrew Union College Ethics Center); Robert P. George (director of James Madison Program at Princeton University); Mary Ann Glendon (religious right activist and author); Frederick Hill (chairman of McCallum Hill Ltd.); Jeane Kirkpatrick; Paul Klassen (chairman of Trinity Forum and board member of U.S. Chamber of Commerce); and Richard Neuhaus (founder of Institute on Religion and Public Life). Terrorism: ethics, effectiveness and enemies
Published in Social Alternatives, Vol. 23, No. 2, Second Quarter 2004, pp. 36-37. This is one of six responses to Ulf Sundhaussen, "Terrorism and America", Social Alternatives, Vol. 23, No. 2, Second Quarter 2004, pp. 6-29.
Brian Martin
Go to Brian Martin's publications on peace and war Brian Martin's publications Brian Martin's website Terrorism is nearly always assumed to be unethical. Indeed, the very label "terrorism" has become a hostile judgement disguised as a description (Gearty, 1997). In conventional western accounts of terrorism, there is a double standard: only terrorism by nonstate groups or US-government-defined "rogue states" is counted. Sundhaussen, like other critics, instead adopts a definition that includes terrorism by dominant states, especially the United States. His next step is to focus on injustices experienced by oppressed groups such as the Palestinians. He argues that when an oppressed group is so weak that no other response has a chance, then armed action against civilians can have some justification, at least as much justification as violence perpetrated by oppressors. This attention to justifying terrorism by the oppressed marginalises nonviolent options. Just because terrorism sometimes can be justified does not mean that nonviolent action can be ignored.

P rotecting human research subjects is hot stuff right nowone only needs to look as far as the cover story of the 22 April 2002 issue of Time magazine entitled “At Your Own Risk.” Indeed, I would argue that the United States is experiencing a national crisis of public trust in academic research involving human subjects. This crisis has been ignited by the deaths of research subjects at two prestigious academic medical centers and by federal sanctions levied against a host of excellent academic institutions. The future of human subjects research is a central question for social and behavioral scientists, clinical investigators, graduate students, undergraduates, professors, deans, university presidents, political leaders, and the lay public. Given current circumstances, it would be easy to be alarmist. A more accurate perspective is gained by taking history into account, and by considering how the ethics of research with human subjects have evolved over the last 60 years. A pattern of “crisis and response” has prompted an evolution of research ethics to the current system of human subjects protections in the United States. The process looks something like this:

Continuous commentary from The American Prospect Online Main July 29, 2005 MISSING IN ACTION. This Jonathan Rauch article on what the Supreme Court is likely to look like if John Roberts gets on the bench has a real tendency to ramble, but it brings to mind a good point. The issue where it looks clearest that the O'Connor-Roberts swap will make a difference is one we haven't heard very much about affirmative action. We just recently had a 5-4 decision where O'Connor sided with the liberals to uphold state university (private colleges and universities pose somewhat different issues) affirmative action programs. The balance will almost certainly shift on this, and it'll be a big change. I'm not much of an affirmative action advocate (see, e.g., this ), which explains why I haven't been ringing the alarm bells on this. But surely we have some shrill affirmative action fans here on the left who should be yelling and screaming. But where? Perhaps the feeling is that this is a losing political issues, so people had best keep quiet about it, but the relative silence strikes me as odd since affirmative action is supposed to be one of our legendary "hot button" issues. Anti-Libertarian Ethics
    by Michael S. Rozeff
    by Michael S. Rozeff
The free-market libertarian ethic rests, as Murray Rothbard put it, "on the primordial fact of self-ownership by every man, and on the fact that each man may only live and prosper as he exercises his natural freedom of choice..." When violations of this ethic occur, how do the violators justify them? In what ways do their rationalizations conflict with "self-ownership by every man"? If we are to counter these claims, answers to these questions become important. I identify and discuss four recurring themes in anti-libertarian or anti-self-ownership ethics. They are (1) denial that those aggressed upon are men or human beings, (2) denial that men have 100% self-ownership, (3) an argument that those aggressed upon have consented to the aggression, and (4) an argument that self-defense justifies the aggression. Men are subhuman The Nazis claimed that many groups of men were subhuman ( Untermenschen ), and that this gave them the right to exterminate or enslave them. American
