Mr. Bell's interests center in epistemology and the philosophy of literature. His work in epistemology focuses on the problem of skepticism and issues that arise at the cross section of epistemology and philosophy of mind. His interests in the philosophy of literature include the role of imagination in reading texts as well as the possibility of moral knowledge through engagement with literature. He has taught several introductory courses, including a seminar in morality and moral psychology. Other courses include epistemology, informal logic, and philosophy of literature. Before coming to Oberlin, Mr. Bell was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan.

166. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Ethics
Many writers regard ethics as any scientific treatment of the moral order and divide it into theological, or Christian, ethics (moral theology) and philosophical ethics (moral philosophy).

Ethics
1. Definition Many writers regard ethics (Gr. ethike ) as any scientific treatment of the moral order and divide it into theological, or Christian Like ethics, moral theology also deals with the moral actions of man; but unlike ethics it has its origin in supernaturally revealed truth. It presupposes man's elevation to the supernatural order, and, though it avails itself of the scientific conclusions of ethics, it draws its knowledge for the most part from Christian II. Sources and Methods of Ethics Christian Revelation is not a proper source of ethics. Only those conclusions properly belong to ethics which can be reached with the help of experience and philosophical principles. The Christian philosopher, however, may not ignore supernatural revelation, but must at least recognise itas a negative norm, inasmuch as he is not to advance any assertion in evident contradiction to the revealed truth of Christianity God is the fountain-head of all truth whether natural as made known by Creation, or supernatural as revealed through Christ and the Prophets. As our intellect is an image of the Divine Intellect, so is all certain scientific knowledge the reflex and interpretation of the Creator's thoughts embodied in His creatures, a participation in His eternal wisdom.

Next SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Philosophical Paradigms from Ancient India: Ethics, Doctrines of Impermanence and Change; Buddhist Ideology Buddhist Ethics and Social Criticism Buddhism arose in India during a period of intense intellectual and social ferment. It was a period during which the authority of the Vedas had been placed in doubt, the concept of god as a supreme being and creator was in question, the hereditary restrictions on caste mobility were under attack, and the efficacy of Brahminical rituals was being challenged. The authors of the Upanishads had opened the door for various heterodox currents to emerge in society, and amongst the most significant of these were the Lokayatas who polemicized against religious charlatans, and the Nyayavadis whose rational epistemology created the foundation for intense philosophical debate and encouraged the investigation of the real world based on reason and logic, freed from the burden of superstition and irrational adherence to burdensome rituals. Various ideological sects competed for the attention and acceptance of the ruling elites and the public. The most important amongst these were the Jains and the Buddhists. Although each of the various sects made original and interesting contributions to philosophy, it was the early Buddhists who attempted to provide a unified philosophical system where ethical conduct and social criticism lay at the very core of their ideological system.

Biography
Avital Ronell is professor and chair, German Department, New York University. Ph.D., (Princeton University). Former performance artist and professor of comparative literature, University of California at Berkeley. An extremely courageous philosopher who did post-doctoral work in Paris and Germany, she is a noted cultural critic admired as the "black lady of deconstruction" and an "ivory-tower terrorist." Avital Ronell bridges the European and American theory traditions and has contributed to the deconstructive reading of technology and communication as well as ethics and aesthetics. Author of Dictations; The Telephone Book; Crack Wars; Finitude's Score.
Avital Ronell is a professor of philosophy at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where she teaches an Intensive Summer Seminar.
Avital Ronell's oeuvre is informed and facilitated by a wide range of (post) philosophers—including, for example, Derrida, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Levinas, Blanchot, Lacoue-Labarthe, and Nancy—but when it comes down to it, as Eduardo Cadava observes, "Ronell's work remains absolutely different." From her first book, Dictations, through her latest one, Stupidity, Ronell calls the established questions into question, zooming in on whatever "withdraws from immediate promises of transparency or meaning" and/or tracking what she calls the "rhetorical unconscious of a text" ("Confessions" 249). A hybrid of high theory and street talk, Ronell's texts are remarkable both for what they say and for the extraordinary way in which they say it.

Argues that Christ's philosophy holds the key to completing Kantian ethics through resolving the dualism of happiness and virtuousness.

Christ’s Reply to Kant Yongk No part of this book may be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or transmitted by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise, without written permission from the author. Introduction I have divided this introduction into 4 sections, so that the reader may have a better understanding on what I shall attempt to do in this book through seeing the problem from 4 different viewpoints. Kantian Ethics can also be called the ethics of the metaphysical i.e. with its metaphysical moral will, metaphysical freedom of the will, metaphysical responsibility, metaphysical punishment and justice. Is there really a metaphysical world, or is it merely in one’s drunken mind, who is, according to Wittgenstein, bewitched by his language. Let’s take a look at the belief in the existence of metaphysical justice. (Note that I’m not in anyway denying the importance of social justice, but only the metaphysical one.) Should the first in a competition be rewarded or should the person who could derive the greatest joy from the award itself be rewarded instead? It seems that the first deserve or ought to be rewarded, just as the moral man seems to deserve happiness more than the sinner. And this

Paul-Henri Thiry (Baron) d'Holbach
1. Biography
. Many in Paris coveted invitations to rue Royale, and Holbach's house was the first stop for many prominent international visitors. Holbach's character must have been remarkable to have maintained a salon in which the espousers of political and religious reform met so freely and so often with visitors who either cannot have been accustomed to such open dialogue or who were themselves parts of the establishment under attack. Indeed Rousseau, who himself came to feel unwelcome by the coterie, nevertheless memorializes Holbach in , as the paradoxical figure, Womar, an athiest who nonetheless embodies all of the Christian virtues. In addition to his good character, Holbach's generosity at table (his dinners and especially his wine were famously good) and in supporting many of his acquaintances may explain his success at being both a pillar and a critic of society. Perhaps, also, Holbach was not in the eyes of many of his contemporaries as clearly a radical as some other members of his coterie. He did publish some of the most notorious works of the French Enlightenment, including
