Thorough Report by the Institute for philosophy and Public Policy.

The Ethics of Human Cloning The successful cloning of an adult sheep, announced in Scotland this past February, is one of the most dramatic recent examples of a scientific discovery becoming a public issue. During the last few months, various commentators scientists and theologians, physicians and legal experts, talk-radio hosts and editorial writers have been busily responding to the news, some calming fears, other raising alarms about the prospect of cloning a human being. At the request of the President, the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) held hearings and prepared a report on the religious, ethical, and legal issues surrounding human cloning. While declining to call for a permanent ban on the practice, the Commission recommended a moratorium on efforts to clone human beings, and emphasized the importance of further public deliberation on the subject. An interesting tension is at work in the NBAC report. Commission members were well aware of "the widespread public discomfort, even revulsion, about cloning human beings." Perhaps recalling the images of Dolly the ewe that were featured on the covers of national news magazines, they noted that "the impact of these most recent developments on our national psyche has been quite remarkable." Accordingly, they felt that one of their tasks was to articulate, as fully and sympathetically as possible, the range of concerns that the prospect of human cloning had elicited.

More specifically, it is a belief in God that created the universe and set it in motion to run by natural processes (laws), and is based on the observation of orderly nature (universe) and human reason (speculation), rather than on holy books. Generally, it's a rational belief in God without accepting the creeds of any particular traditional religion. Deism is a philosophy that can be a thinking person's religion. The current revolution in science and technology has led to concern that unbridled scientific progress is not always ethically acceptable. UNESCO’s Programme on the Ethics of Science and Technology reflects this concern and aims to place such progress in a context of ethical reflection rooted in the cultural, legal, philosophical and religious heritage of the various human communities. Ethics of Science and Technology is one of UNESCO’s five priority areas.

Summary of Philosophy Faculty Moves and Hirings for 2002-03
10/19 UPDATE: I'm moving this to the front, since various corrections/additions have been made in some of the entries (Harvard, Columbia, Pittsburgh, among others). The following summary of faculty moves and hirings at ranked PhD-granting programs that transpired since the last edition of the Report (from fall 2002) is intended to allow prospective students make effective use of the 2002-04 Report as they choose graduate programs this coming academic year. (The next comprehensive survey will be undertaken in summer 2004, for the 2004-06 edition of the Report.) Note that in some cases, senior hires were announced prior to the last PGR, even though the actual move did not occur till this year. Thus, where hires are already reflected in the fall 2002 PGR, they are not noted here. In addition, since faculty age is a factor evaluators are invited, but not required, to consider, faculty who are turning 70 soon are noted. Remember, however, that there is no mandatory retirement age, and while many faculty still retire before or around 70, many others continue teaching. Check with individual departments for more information. It is a reasonable supposition that senior appointments (listed as “hires”) will affect the specialty rankings in most of the cases noted below. (“Junior hires” means a tenure-track assistant professor, or equivalent.) If you are interested in Brian Leiter’s own editorial comments on these developments

Next Spinoza’s Ethics Spinoza’s Ethica ordine geometrico demonstrata Ethics demonstrated in geometrical order ) is based on a deductive method derived from Euclidean geometry. Spinoza maintains that the validity of ethical ideas can be demonstrated by mathematical argument or proof. Spinoza asserts that ethics can be based on a geometric model in which axioms and propositions follow each other with logical necessity. This reflects the view that ethical truth has the same logical necessity as mathematical truth. Spinoza sees ethics as a rational system corresponding to the rational nature of the universe. The Ethics is divided into five parts: Part I. "Of God;" Part II. "Of the Nature and Origin of the Mind;" Part III. "Of the Origin and Nature of the Emotions;" Part IV. "Of Human Bondage, or Of the Strength of the Emotions;" Part V. "Of the Power of the Intellect, or Of Human Liberty." Each of the five parts of the Ethics consists of several definitions and axioms, followed by a series of propositions and corollaries.

Letters I Never Mailed: Clues to a Life by Alec Wilder
In Letters I Never Mailed: Clues to a Life, Alec Wilder wanted to reveal himself, but not entirely. And so he left unidentified the individuals to whom many of the letters were written. The detective work of David Demsey gives us a much better understanding of the enigma that was Alec Wilder. Marian McPartland, renowned jazz pianist, recording artist, and host for over 25 years of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz (National Public Radio) Musical Encounters at the 1889 Paris World's Fair
A work of striking originality. Fauser's 'thick description' of the 1889 World's Fair introduces us to a vibrant sonic world usually left silent in the mute halls of cultural history. Brilliantly researched and written, this book doesn't just tell us about empire, nationalism, and the 'exotic'; it allows us to heed their often dissonant sounds. Edward Berenson, Director, Institute of French Studies, New York University Health and Wealth: Studies in History and Policy
These essays are an intellectual delight. They also have profound implications for policy. Szreter arrays persuasive evidence that the preconditions for economic growth include economic and social security that is initiated and sustained by effective governments in collaboration with autonomous civic institutions. Return to Calendar Introduction to Ethics/Philosophy Activities This set of activities is intended to enhance your ability to engage in philosophical discourse and are related to course objectives 3 and 4. Philosophy is the endeavor to discover by systematic reflection the ultimate nature of things. It is an unusually stubborn attempt to think clearly. The topic of interest for this course is the nature of nursing and nursing philosophy. Ethical Decision Making Models: I anticipate you are already familiar with this area of literature. There are so many models out there for clinical decision making. This activity gives you an opportunity to select/apply the most workable model for each of you. ANA Code of Ethics: As a leader in the profession, it is important for you to be familiar with this code and its history. Looking at the various evolutions of the code you get a chance to apply the study of history with focus to ideas, events, people, places, and times. Leadership Ethics Interview: As a leader in the profession, this activity sensitizes you to the complexities of the macroapplication of ethics/philosophy. I gave you whole journals for reading assignments. You do not need to bog down reading those word for word but must review them to get a handle on the various models. It should be interesting learning for you to hear from a nurse executive how she/he deals with tough issues and what guides his/her decisions.

M.Sc. Philosophy of Social Science, London School of Economics (1999) I work in philosophy of science broadly conceived. I am also a member of the Science Studies Program. My dissertation is on causal inference in social sciences. I seek to understand and to explain the successes and failures of two prominent methodological approaches. The first is the use of rational choice theory (especially game theory) in economics and political science with a special study of the game-theory inspired FCC spectrum auctions. The second is the new Boolean-based comparative method for causal inference from case studies used in some areas of sociology.  Unlike previous work in the field my approach eschews grand questions (e.g. is economics a science?), and focuses on applied rather than theoretical social science. I also have interests in metaphysics (especially laws of nature and related notions), scientific method (especially comparisons between physics and the more ‘messy’ sciences), the social order of science and various historical issues connected to science and its philosophies. One day I will turn to the fascinating relationship between social science and political philosophy and figure out how the claims of the latter should take into account the knowledge of the former. Recently I’ve been helping Nancy Cartwright (my dissertation chair) with her work on the methodology of research into the relationship between health, socio-economic status and well-being.
