During the past week, the human suffering and destruction along the Gulf Coast of the U.S. caused by Hurricane Katrina has been almost unimaginable. The Federation has gotten calls and e-mails from members who are concerned about our colleagues and their families in the affected region. In many cases, we still do not know how they fared. We remain hopeful that everyone is safe. ( read more

San Francisco Estuary and Watershed Archive
is a companion service to the peer-reviewed electronic journal, San Francisco Estuary and Watershed Science . The Journal focuses on contemporary scientific findings in the science of estuaries and watersheds, with a particular emphasis on the San Francisco Estuary and the watersheds that drain into it. The Archive is intended to provide electronic access to legacy documents, including: historical accounts and surveys; project, planning and strategic reports; and non-peer-reviewed environmental information resources. An initial focus of the Archive is to digitize, index, and post historically important collections of papers and books that are now out of print. San Francisco Estuary and Watershed Archive is a project of the California Bay-Delta Authority Science Program . Technological support is provided by the Berkeley Electronic Press and Envirospectives, Inc. The contents of the Archive may be freely copied and distributed for research, educational, management, governmental, or other public, non-profit purposes. Archive Content: James J. Orsi

Fish and Wildlife Service
The department-level Cooperative Conservation Initiative (CCI) brought about the development of two new Service initiatives: the Private Stewardship Grant (PSG) Program and the Landowner Incentive Program (LIP). Through slightly different channels these two programs provide grants and other assistance to individuals and groups engaged in local, private, and voluntary conservation efforts that benefit federally listed, proposed, or candidate species, or other at-risk species. Both programs are flexible and are open to all private landowners who have a desire to voluntarily manage for rare species on their land. The Ecological Services Program (Endangered Species and Habitat Conservation) works in partnership with public agencies, private organizations and landowners and operators with the goal of reducing threats to declining species. Its consultation and recovery elements include a wide range of management options designed to protect species while still allowing private economic development to proceed. The North American Wetlands Conservation Fund and associated program provide assistance to conserve wetland ecosystems, migratory waterfowl and other birds and other migratory fish and wildlife that depend upon wetlands. Through voluntary partnerships, federal funding leverages nonfederal funds for projects that focus on restoring wetlands and acquiring wetlands from willing sellers to be managed for wildlife conservation by private organizations or state and federal agencies.

April 2005 The US Western US . Below are recommendations for USDI programs involving conservation districts. Fish and Wildlife Service The Partners for Fish and Wildlife (PFW) Program offers technical and financial assistance to private landowners to voluntarily restore wetlands and other fish and wildlife habitats on their land. It emphasizes the re-establishment of native vegetation and ecological communities for the benefit of fish and wildlife while meeting the needs and desires of private landowners. The Private Stewardship Grant (PSG) Program and the Landowner Incentive Program (LIP) provide grants assistance to individuals and groups engaged in local, private, and voluntary conservation efforts that benefit federally listed, proposed, candidate or other at-risk species. The Cooperative Endangered Species Conservation Fund (ES Fund) provides grants for conservation, recovery, and monitoring of listed and candidate species. Grants are also used for land acquisition for Habitat Conservation Plans and species recovery efforts in partnership with local governments and other interested parties to protect species while allowing development to continue. The North American Wetlands Conservation Fund provides assistance to conserve wetland ecosystems, migratory and other waterfowl and other migratory fish and wildlife that depend upon wetlands. Funding leverages nonfederal funds to restore wetlands and acquire wetlands from willing sellers to be managed by private organizations or state and federal agencies.

Welcome to LUMCON's Bayouside Classroom, where students learn about estuaries and watersheds while conducting scientific data collection. Our goals are to help teachers train their students as young scientists, and promote stewardship through awareness that local environments function as part of larger, connected ecosystems.
