watersheds estuaries What are watersheds and estuaries? A watershed is all ofthe area that drains into the same water body.
http://www.bbwa.org/we.htm
What are Watersheds and Estuaries?
A watershed
Large watersheds like the Barnegat Bay can be divided into smaller watersheds. For example, the Metedeconk River watershed and the Toms River watershed are both part of the Barnegat Bay watershed because water from both rivers empties into the Barnegat Bay. An estuary is a partially enclosed body of water formed where fresh water from rivers and stream flows into the ocean and mixes with salty seawater. Estuaries come in the form of bays, lagoons, harbors, inlets and sounds. Barnegat Bay is an example of a local estuary and displays the beautiful and diverse ecosystems typical of estuaries. About the Barnegat Bay Watershed
The Barnegat Bay Watershed:
  • Encompasses 660 square miles in most of Ocean and parts of Monmouth counties Stretches between mile markers 53 and 92 on the Garden State Parkway Includes fresh water from nine streams and rivers that flow east into Barnegat Bay Is home to 38 municipalities, more than 500,000 people, scores of animal species and a wide range of ecosystems, including forest, marsh, pond and bay

Watershed Awareness
Part A. Understanding Watersheds
Activity Objective
: Students will understand the relationship between upstream influences in their watershed and their watershed's estuary. They will identify the information needed and the resources necessary to address a potential watershed question.
Students will be able to use the scientific process to test a hypothesis, and will understand how science and the process of science contributes to decision-making.
Students will understand their connection to and the importance of estuaries and the impact upland activities have on these systems.
Procedure:
  • As a class, create a concept map showing the relationship between upstream influences and problems in the watershed and estuary. Discuss possible study questions or monitoring objectives.
    • 1. ex. Upstream Inputs : freshwater, nutrients, sediment, bacteria, chemicals, pollutants.
    • Question : Are there bacteria that cause a negative influence in the watershed?

On September 17, 2005, the Environmental Commission will feature its annual cleanup of Natco Park, which will involve many local community members, including children and families. The cleanup will be followed by an educational program that will include tours of the park and the lake shore with education on the relationship between the brackish lake and the local estuarine ecosystem. The program will include the identification of marine and plant life, the location of tidelines on the lake shore, and the history of Natco Lake, including how it was created and how it links to Raritan Bay. The Editorial Board
... Online ESTUARIES is the bimonthly journal of the Estuarine Research Federation , an international organization whose purpose is to promote research in estuarine and coastal waters, to promote communication between members of affiliated societies, to conduct meetings and to be available as a source of advice in matters concerning estuaries and the coastal zone. The journal publishes manuscripts presenting original research findings, reviews, techniques, and comments. The subjects considered appropriate for publication in the journal include any aspect of research on physical, chemical, geological, or biological systems, as well as management of those systems, at the interface between the land and the sea. The interface is broadly defined to include areas within estuaries, lagoons, wetlands, tidal rivers, watersheds that influence estuaries, and near-shore coastal waters.

Higher Education and the Hudson River Valley:

    Meeting the Environmental Challenge

    February 27, 2004
    The River and Estuaries Center
was conceived by Governor George Pataki to address research, education, collection and distribution of information about human impacts on evolving ecosystems, and the development of sound policies for managing rivers and estuaries. Starting with the entire Hudson River ecosystem, the Center will build upon existing research and education efforts, becoming a clearinghouse for the creation, storage and dissemination of information gathered through its new model of inquiry. Through partnerships and global outreach, the Center will extend its expertise to river populations and governments around the world.
The Center will advance the understanding of rivers, estuaries and watersheds worldwide through collaborative, integrated research and education. Its single program will be learning, in all its constructs; research, investigation, monitoring, teaching, dialogue, and debate; accomplished through multi-disciplinary investigation, including the natural sciences, social sciences, education, art, economics, and culture. The Center will augment existing education programs by providing communal resources such as boats and educational materials and by providing access to real-time information useful in classroom discussions.

    ACTIVITY 1: UNDERSTAND YOUR WATERSHED
PART A: WHAT IS THE QUESTION?
Activity Objective: Students will understand the relationship between upstream influences in their watershed and their watershed's estuary. They will identify the information needed and the resources necessary to address a potential watershed question. Estuary-Net Outcome Connection: High schools will form a partnership with their local officials, state Coastal Zone Management programs, and National Estuarine Research Reserves to work collaboratively in solving non-point source pollution problems in estuaries and watersheds. Students will be able to use the scientific process to test a hypothesis, and will understand how science and the process of science contributes to decision-making. Students will understand their connection to and the importance of estuaries and the impact upland activities have on these systems. Time Needed: 1 class period. Materials: Chart paper, computer. Procedure:
  • As a class, create a concept map showing the relationship between upstream influences and problems in the watershed and estuary. Discuss possible study questions or monitoring objectives.

    ACTIVITY 7- SHARE THE DATA
    PART A: LOCAL ISSUES
Activity Objective: Students will learn that the data they have gathered is limited, but may indicate potential problems. They will learn that they need assistance from the community in order to begin to address this problem. Estuary-Net Outcome Connections: High schools will form a partnership with their local officials, state Coastal Zone Management programs, and National Estuarine Research Reserves to work collaboratively in problems with problems in estuaries and watersheds. Students will learn how to play a meaningful role in solving local water quality problems. Students will be able to use the scientific process to test a hypothesis and will understand how science and the process of science contributes to decision-making. Assessment: This entire activity is an assessment of all of the information learned through the previous activities. Students are assessed in a number of ways: they brainstorm; they work collaboratively to report about an upland influence on the estuary; telecommunicate their findings; and they create a presentation of their findings for an audience of local officials and other invited guests. Judgements about the reports and presentations should be made using the criteria set at the beginning of the project and any adjustments that have been made to that criteria since that time. Time Needed: 1-2 class periods.
