    History
After 8 centuries of Danish Swedish German , and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it regained its freedom in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the last Russian troops left in 1994, Estonia has been free to promote economic and political ties with Western Europe. It is now one of the more-prosperous former Communist states, enjoying a highly-technological environment, a very open and liberal economy and a transparent government system. On the other hand, it is faced with a fairly low (but growing) GDP per capita in a European Union context, as well as a very low birth rate which is leading to rapid population decline.

Maantieteen laitos, Oulun yliopisto Terra The popularity of organic farming has grown along with the rise of green values in recent years. Organic cultivation is seen as one solution not only for the environmental problems in agriculture and for the question of the purity of foodstuffs, but also for the social problems in the countryside, such as the decrease in number of jobs and population.
Most Western European countries are already subsidizing organic production. Also, the common agricultural policy of the European Union (CAP) has been aimed at steering farming in a more extensive direction not only on the basis of environmental aspects, but also because of overproduction.
In Western Europe, the conversion to organic production has been the most intensive in the German-speaking countries and Scandinavia. In 1995, Austria had proportionally the greatest number of farms and the largest area of arable land under organic cultivation. Although organic production has grown steadily in the whole of Western Europe during the past years, the development in individual countries has often been rather unsteady. Organic production is, however, now seen as a sector of agriculture that has potential for growth, and most countries have set targets to increase its present proportion.

    Estonia Climate
The prevailing wind is from the south west and brings mild wet air from the Atlantic Ocean. The yearly average temperature is 3-7 §C and the yearly average precipitation ranges from 500 to 700 mm. The yearly average number of days when it rains or snows is 150 - 200. Estonia is located in the extreme northwestern part of the great Eurasian land mass in the neighbourhood of the North Atlantic. However, once in a ten years period the very cold air masses press from the east and that comes to effect mainly into the eastern part of Estonia. There the lowest temperatures were recorded: -43 to -44 §C (on the snow cover -50 §C). Annual solar radiation in Estonia amounts to 3518 MJ m-2. Geography
Estonia is rather flat. The average elevation is 50 metres, the highest point in the south east is 318 m above sea level. In southern Estonia the relief is considerably more varied in height differences. Soddy clay soils predominate (32%) and soddy calcareous soils account for one quarter of the arable land. The most fertile soils occur in the central and southern part of the country. Horticulture
The following aspects of horticulture can be found in Estonia: arboriculture, fruit growing, vegetable production in the open and under glass, and flower culture.
