estonia and the European Union Pro and contra in the estonian press have opinion that the EU accession could be a threat to the estonia s culture,
http://www.ies.ee/summary.html
Estonia and the European Union: Pro and contra in the Estonian press Summary The article deals with the problems of the EU discussion held in Estonian printed media during the first half of 1997. The main task of the brief survey was to give an overview of the problems concerning Estonia's integration into the E U. Special attention was focused on the expectations and fears most frequently mainfested in the media discource as well as on the argumentation used to defend positive or negative attitudes towards the union. The most characteristic feature of Estonian EU discussion is first of all the deficiency of relevant and sufficient information concerning the EU, which leads to several kinds of speculations. The main political forces of Estonia are quit e confident that Estonia has no alternative to the EU and their attitude is accordingly generally quite favourable to the EU. As the public opinion polls indicate the scepticism among the ordinary people is still growing as the price of Estonia's EU acces sion becomes clearer. Though it is quite complicated to predict what exactly is going to happen in Estonia's economy. The position of some Estonian political leaders that the question of Estonia's EU membership cannot be debated does not actually promote the discussion about the costs and benefits of the EU accession. The article also pays attention on the factors that are claimed to slow down the pace of Estonia's eurointegration. Among them various speculations concerning the geopolitical and other hidden motives of EU enlargement must be mentioned . The necessity to speed up the harmonisation of Estonia's legislation with the requirements of EU legislation was also very often pointed out as well as the problems with the integration of the Russian minority, border, crime and refugee problems.

Educational reform has played an important role in Estonia's continuing progress. Educational exchanges between the independent republic of Estonia and the United States began in 1992. Since then dozens of Estonians and Americans have participated in the Fulbright program. American lecturers have assisted in the reform of humanities and social science curricula, sometimes in cooperation with European partners. American lecturers and researchers are collaborating with Estonian scholars in a broad range of fields from thermodynamics to vocal music.

Old and New in Estonia by Don Barker In the expressive silhouette of Tallinn, Estonia's capital city and largest port, visitors approaching from the Baltic Sea see a distinct personality split into the new and the old. The split can be traced back to 1227, when the medieval town in northeastern Europe was conceded to an order of crusading knights. The Brothers of the Sword divided the colony into the fortress (the upper old town with colorful cobble-stoned streets and an array of castles and churches) and the lower town, which is now developing a modern persona. The city's numerous verticals depict a rich trading past and its journey into the 21st century. The most important and original monument of Estonian Gothic is the old town of Tallinn itself, which is listed as a World Heritage site. A Tour through Old Tallinn The 10th-century medieval "old town" rises up on the chalk-based Toompea Hill. The 454 properties include medieval warehouses and the dwellings of merchants and artisans. All have been preserved along with the important public buildings from the Middle Ages such as the Town Hall. In the old city of Tallinn, the facades of the medieval houses have been redesigned according to later styles of fashion. However, behind them the old building constructions, and the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque interior elements, have been preserved.

Beer Hunter:
Estonia free to revive its own brewing culture
On my last visit to Estonia, there was snow on the ground. One of the most vivid memories was a horse-drawn sled gliding across the fields. This time, there was bright sun, and the fields were ablaze with dandelions and buttercups, but I still managed to see a horse pulling a plough. Much else had changed. Last time, Estonia was still under Soviet rule. Now, it is independent. The new middle class have Fords and VWs. I even spotted a Lada laggard talking into his cax phone as he spluttered dangerously down a lovely cobbled street. For reasons I could not quite pinpoint, the man who came to interview me for Estonian television was wearing a cowboy hat, kerchief, shirt bulging with a pack of Marlboro, and jeans. I did not have the heart to tell him that smoking is now a capital offence in The Land of the Free. Nor would a beer called Rock (as in music) be thought hip in the territories of Samuel Adams and Anchor Liberty, but I let that pass, too. After all, we were were enjoying our drink in a well-regarded beer bar: Karja Kelder, in the medieval Old Town of Tallinn, the capital. And our companions were members of the Imperial Beer Club, named possibly after the stout or more probably after a long-gone cafe. "What's your favourite beer song?" demanded one member.
