Culture Estonian culture is that of a nation of a little more than one million people. Along with the language, this culture is the main vehicle for Estonian identity, hence the respect which Estonians feel for it.
The most striking example of the culture of ancient Estonians is their regiv¤rss , i.e. rhythmic verse , as well as their aural tradition of folk song where each line is repeated several times with variations on a theme. Nowadays, such ancient culture is rarely encountered, exceptions being the island of Kihnu and the Setu border region, but such culture is nonetheless preserved and research is carried out on it. Estonians have one of the biggest collections of folk songs in the world, with written records of about 133,000 folk songs.
In the early 13th century, the Teutonic Order sent their crusaders here. The knights were followed up by priests. What remains of that epoch are mainly small country churches with tarred spires, situated near the coast.
The German colonists made their mark on Estonian spiritual, material and everyday culture. By way of this culture, Estonia entered the mainstream of the Occident. The Germans, who lived in manor houses and towns, did not mix with the indigenous population and for several centuries, Estonian and German culture developed in parallel. Over time, the Germans developed their own brand of specifically Baltic German sub-culture.
Through the centuries, Estonia has also been under the tutelage of

Cultural Relations
Estonian culture has been presented by many artists and musicians in the US. Tµnu Kaljuste has worked as a guest conductor with a number of choirs and orchestras in North America. Neeme J¤rvi is the 11th music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra while making annual appearances conducting the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Erkki-Sven T¼¼r’s music is also being heard more and more frequently in the US. His works have been performed at the Bang on a Can festival in New York.
The musical achievements of famous Estonian composer Arvo P¤rt have been honoured by his election as an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1996.
Mark Kalev Kostabi, a provocative Estonian artist and composer born in the US, has created his own world in the heart of the New York City – a giant art studio where about 1,500 paintings are made every year. Kostabi's work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Brooklyn Museum. His music has also been performed in the USA.
Renowned American musicians and groups, such as Kenny Garrett and the Victor Bailey Group, Chicago Beau, Brian Melvin, Mike Stern, Joey DeFrancesco Trio and Terry Lyne Carrington Group have recently participated in the biggest annual international jazz event in Estonia, named Jazzkaar.

September 4, 2005 The NJ Convention Center at the Raritan Center, Edison, NJ For our 20th Anniversary event, Scandinavian Fest announced the relocation of ScanFest to an all indoor venue. The NJ Convention and Exposition Center at the Raritan Center was chosen as the site for ScanFest '04 because of it's better ability to accommodate our visitors, performers and vendors. Scandinavian Fest is a not for profit event to celebrate and promote the cultures, histories and current life of the Nordic area countries. It is staffed entirely by volunteers. If you would enjoy the satisfaction of helping to produce the largest Nordic event in the East, and possibly the country, please consider volunteering your help on the day of the fest. The Fest needs people to help with admissions, the Information booth, and to work to keep things on schedule at the 4 performance stages. Besides the satisfaction of supporting a worthwhile event and the fun of meeting and working with the other volunteers and other participants, volunteers of course receive free admission. Estonia Latvia Lithuania Culture
I have noticed that they ignore completely what I am saying no matter how I say it, or what I do... I am good at sign language.
Eye contact is not made and they miss or are not able to communicate. These culture have a very poor ability to deal with direct comments. I am having a great time saying,
"Hello, how are you today?"
It drive these three countries crazy and I think nobody ever says hello.
I went into this grocery store, held up my ATM or Bank Card and made motions of putting this into the machine. They finally shake their head and say no, I go out and start to walk further down the street.
This Bank Machine is inside their store and pointed out, just goes to show you that you really need to be careful when asking people for help. The receptionist at the Hostel said there was none in the old town and I needed to go the miles back to the bus station to find a Bank Machine. This machine is right down the hill from the Hostel.

http://www.eurotravelling.net/estonia/tartu/tartu_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tartu - Culture The most beautiful city in Estonia is Tartu - say the lyrics of a well-known song. For this to come true you first of all have to promote one part of it - culture. Therefore several cultural groups and intellectuals help to advance culture and the biggest planner, organiser and executor of cultural, sports and youth events in Tartu - the Department of Culture of the City Government, in turn support them. Close contacts with professional artists contribute to the development and promotion of national culture - the results of that can be enjoyed by the citizens and guests of Tartu when they visit interesting concerts, exhibitions or cultural events in Tartu. Sport life is promoted by big events with masses and masters participating, the most well known among these are undoubtedly Tartu Marathon in winter and Tartu Bicycle Race in summer Tourists from all over the world discovered Tartu only some years ago - at Soviet times the biggest Baltic military aerodrome was situated here and therefore the town was strictly closed for foreigners. But the more hospitable the citizens of Tartu are towards the visitors of their city today. Every year more and more tourists come to visit Tartu. The cathedral was built during several periods of construction and reconstruction, reaching its final shape in the 16th century. During the wars of the second half of the 16th century the building was neglected and started to decay. A fire in 1624 quickened the process. The cathedral was partly restored in 1804-1807 after the reopening of the university in 1802, according to the plans of the first university architect Professor Johan Krause to house the university library. In 1927-1928 the library was extended and in 1962-1964 the wooden constructions of the first floor were replaced by concrete inserted ceiling. New restoration work was started in 1985 and gave the building its present-day look.

http://www.einst.ee/estonian_institute.html
The Estonian Institute was founded in 1989. Its activities are supported by the Ministry of Culture; the majority of projects are funded by a number of different sources. In its foundation, the Institute followed the model of various organisations which have been successfully introducing and mediating the culture of their countries for decades (e.g. the British Council, Swedish Institute, Danish Cultural Institute, Goethe Institute). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a long-standing partner as regards the publication and distribution of the information materials about Estonia. In addition, the Institute has had a great number of co-operation projects with several other institutions from the public, private and third sectors.
The Estonian Institute's constitutional tasks are as follows:
  • spreading information about Estonian society, culture and education both at home and abroad;
  • introducing Estonian culture to other countries and promoting cultural communication between Estonia and other countries;
  • supporting the teaching of Estonian language and culture-related subjects in the universities abroad.

    Estonia Table of Contents The Estonian language belongs to the Finno-Ugric family of languages, closely related to Finnish and more distantly related to Hungarian. It is among the most difficult languages in Europe, with fourteen cases for the declension of nouns and complicated rules for their use. There are no articles, however, nor any grammatical gender in Estonian. Indeed, the same word is used for both "he" and "she": tema . Over the years, the language has been standardized, but many dialects and accents remain, especially on the islands. Most of the foreign words used by Estonians come from German. Russian, Finnish, and English also have influenced Estonian, especially in the formation of slang. Estonian culture developed in earnest during the nineteenth-century period of national awakening. Elements of Estonian peasant culture, such as songs and folktales, were brought together by the country's first cultural elite after 1850. Between 1857 and 1861, Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald compiled and published the Estonian national epic, Kalevipoeg (Son of Kalev), which was based on various folklore themes. Written in verse, the epic tells the story of Kalevipoeg, the mythical ancient ruler of Estonia. Another achievement of this period was the establishment of Estonia's first regularly published Estonian-language newspaper
