Welcome Teachers!
Texas Beyond History is rich in information and resources to help you teach about the past in Texas, using archeology as a lens for discovery. In this section are lesson plans for both elementary and secondary grades based on the objectives of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the related Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) and Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). All of these lesson plans were written by experienced teachers enrolled in graduate courses at The University of Texas at Austin. Each lesson can be downloaded and printed for easy use in class. Welcome to the fun and excitement of teaching Texas' cultural heritage and archeology! And don't miss "Imagine It!" in the Kids section. It's a great way to teach kids of all ages about life in the prehistoric past.

The Virginia Standards of Learning Enhanced Scope and Sequence is a resource intended to help teachers align their classroom instruction with the Standards of Learning that were adopted by the Virginia Board of Education. The Enhanced Scope and Sequence is organized by topics from the original Scope and Sequence document and includes the content of the Standards of Learning and the essential knowledge and skills from the Curriculum Framework. In addition, the Enhanced Scope and Sequence provides teachers with sample lesson plans that are aligned with the essential knowledge and skills in the Curriculum Framework. School divisions and teachers can use the Enhanced Scope and Sequence as a resource for developing sound curricular and instructional programs. These materials are intended as examples of how the knowledge and skills might be presented to students in a sequence of lessons that has been aligned with the Standards of Learning. Teachers who use the Enhanced Scope and Sequence should correlate the essential knowledge and skills with available instructional resources and determine the pacing of instruction as appropriate. This resource is not a complete curriculum and is neither required nor prescriptive, but it can be a valuable instructional tool.

1999 Science Evaluation Criteria
Criteria for evaluating K-8 Science instructional material established by State Board of Education action on March 10, 1999. In October 1998, the California State Board of Education adopted Science Content Standards for Grades K-12 (referred to as the Standards) that describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. The Standards define the essential skills and knowledge in science that will enable California students to compete with their peers around the world.
Students should have the opportunity to learn science by direct instruction, by reading textbooks and supplemental materials, by solving Standards-based problems, and by doing lab investigations and experiments. At each grade level for grades K through 8, a list of essential, and progressively more sophisticated investigation and experimentation standards is included. These investigation and experimentation standards should be integral to, and directly and specifically supporting the teaching of the Life, Physical and Earth Science standards at the time the material is taught.
These criteria are organized into five categories:

It is not an exhaustive list and will be updated on a regular basis since many agencies continue to add lesson plans to their sites. Each entry includes the grade levels and possible subject areas in Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) covered by the lesson plans. Many of the lesson plans on Texas government sites are fully integrated into TEKS. The sites are organized in several ways: according to TEKS area, by an alphabetical master list, and lists by grade level. Each subject area page also includes a link to the appropriate chapter in TEKS from the Texas Education Agency web site. Not every area of TEKS is represented by lesson plans at this time. Some lesson plans can be modified for use in other skills subjects. A "flaming A" icon - - marks a few sites which are comprehensive in nature, covering all grade levels and subjects and containing thousands of lesson plans. These comprehensive sites are included below, as well as on the separate TEKS pages.

Where can I find lesson plans for students with disabilities? You can find lesson plans in books, articles, and on the internet. There are a variety of books and articles that contain sample lesson plans for students with disabilities. However, there are very few websites that provide lesson plans specifically for students with disabilities, as students with disabilities often require lessons tailored to their individual needs. We recommend that you visit websites with lesson plans for general classrooms and make modifications as needed. This FAQ contains internet resources for lesson plans, and also contains citations from the ERIC database for resources with sample lesson plans. Following are links to additional frequently asked questions (FAQs) as well as selected citations from the ERIC database and the search terms we used to find the citations.

Geography Unit: Curriculum Framework
This curriculum unit is standards-based and organized around "big ideas" (concepts, principles, and enduring understandings) that cut across and transfer to other subject areas. Enduring understandings, as defined by Wiggins and McTighe, refer to important ideas or core processes that have lasting value beyond the classroom. To determine enduring understandings, teachers are encouraged to ask: What do we want students to understand and be able to use several years from now, after they have forgotten the details.

To gain a complete and accurate picture of a country, you need to draw on multiple sources of information and evaluate their quality and their perspective. Natural disasters are great tragedies. However, they can bring people together, reinforce interconnections, and reveal surprising traits of heroism. Working together to respond to a natural disaster can unite us with others in a common bond of humanity.

Measurement: Understanding the concepts and uses of measurement provides a basis for developing geometry skills. Students need to know how to find the volume of a model. This knowledge provides students the skills needed to solve geometric problems using formulas. Students should also know and understand the application of measurement concepts to problem solving. As students continue to develop their measurement skills, they should also learn how to recognize numerical relationships
between units of measure. Measurement skills have many real-world applications. Understanding the basic concepts included in Objective 4 will prepare students to apply measurement skills in various situations. In addition, the knowledge and skills found in objective 4 at fifth grade are closely aligned with the knowledge and skills found in Objective 4 at sixth grade. Objective 4 includes the concepts within the TEKS from which an understanding of measurement is developed.
