Compiled by Elizabeth Brunner While teaching English 114: Exposition, a freshman composition class at California Polytechnic State University, I used the following essay assignments. Feel free to adapt for your own college classroom, but I appreciate source credit and email notification when any of my material is used. ESSAY ONE: "EDUCATIONAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY" Goal : To use description or narration to explore an aspect of your personal history as a writer or as a student. To concentrate on polishing and revising a short essay. Grading criteria include the logical flow of ideas, precise language, specific examples, and grammatical clarity. Ideas : Any topic related to your education or your writing is acceptable. For example, you could describe your favorite teacher, discuss your greatest academic accomplishment, tell a story about your award-winning fourth grade poem, use anecdotes to demonstrate how much you hate writing assignments, explain how you panic the night before a research paper is due, or explore your first day in college. Tips : Read your essay aloud to hear how the words sound. Use the spell check feature on your computer. Use Hacker's

Should Pollsters Do It or Not? An essay and compilation of web resources by Alan Reifman , Ph.D., Associate Professor, Human Development and Family Studies, Texas Tech University. Postscript on Sample Weighting in the 2004 Presidential Election
November 9, 2004 Here are some of my initial post-election thoughts on the sample-weighting issue. As more information becomes available, I may refine my opinions. Given that (a) polls over the campaign's final months with partisan composition weighted to previous turnouts tended to show Kerry doing better than polls without such weighting and (b) Kerry lost, one's immediate reaction might be that party ID weighting should now be abandoned (at least tentatively). However, the available evidence does not strongly support that view. Bush won the national popular vote 51%-48%. Zogby, who we know weights on party ID, had it Bush 48-47 in his final national poll, not too far away. Rasmussen, who is believed to weight (see below), had it

English Composition Placement Exam Essay
What is the purpose of the exam?
At Southern Connecticut State University, we require two composition courses: English 100 Composition, which is followed by English 101 Composition II. For students not yet ready for English 100, we also require English 98, a non-credit basic writing course. We use the exam primarily to judge whether you are ready for English 100 or should first take English 98. Who must take the placement exam? Both full-time and part-time students must take the exam in order to register for English 98, 100, 101, or 99 (a credit-bearing, developmental course for students who speak English as a foreign language). Students may not enroll in these courses without a placement test. (Students given transfer credit for the equivalent of English 100, however, may enroll in English 101 without the placement test.) Because English 98 and 100 are designed as courses for students in their first year of university work, we expect students to take the exam in time to register for those courses during their freshman year. Furthermore, English 100 is the pre-requisite not only for English 101 (which in turn is the prerequisite for the all-university requirement of literature) but also for the L-courses (writing intensive courses in various departments) you will be required to take. What is the exam like?

What is the purpose of the exam? At Southern Connecticut State University, we require two composition courses: English 111 Composition I, which is followed by English 112 Composition II. For students not yet ready for English 111, we also require English 110, a composition/writing lab. We use the exam primarily to judge whether you are ready for English 111 or should first take English 110. What is the exam like? Have you answered the question?
Have you developed your thesis with sufficient and appropriate support?
Do you have transitions between paragraphs and ideas?
Have you supported your reasoning with examples from outside reading and other experience?
Have you edited for errors in agreement, punctuation, fragments, word choice, spelling, and other mechanics? We strongly recommend that you complete some form of brief drafting (free-write, outline, or mapping) before writing the essay. If you finish early, be certain to re-read your essay, looking for errors or places you could further develop.
What should I bring to the test?

Helping Struggling Writers:
Using Narratives in Secondary Composition Classes
Introduction Creating an Audience Using Collaboration Conclusion Some students at the secondary education level often struggle in their composition classes because they are not prepared to deal with some of the abstract concepts that the discourse of writing requires, such as writing for a non-existent audience. Students who struggle with composition may be struggling because they are not ready to understand such abstract concepts. Students who struggle with expository and argumentative writing may be able to utilize narratives to facilitate their writing process through modeling or other methods. Because narratives are a less abstract form of discourse, teachers can use narratives rather than other forms of discourse to effectively teach composition to struggling writers at the secondary education level. Narratives are a form of discourse that students relate to on a daily basis.

Portfolio and Test Essay: The Best of Both Writing Assessment Worlds at SUNY Brockport. ERIC Digest.
Now that the need for large-scale writing assessment is received wisdom across the nation (Ewell, 1985), the State University of New York system has mandated outcomes assessment across all disciplines. And SUNY Brockport is particularly serious about its writing assessment. SUNY Brockport is a comprehensive college situated on the outskirts of suburban Rochester in Western New York. With 9,000 full and part-time students, Brockport sustains 36 undergraduate departments and nearly the same number of graduate programs, both heavily oriented toward the professions and the social sciences.
    GOALS
Given the state mandate, the principal goals of Brockport's writing assessment are to answer these two questions: Does a writing program actually help students write better? If it does, can that growth be measured during the college years? These questions pose a host of others and elicit a variety of answers (Brand, 1992; Ruth and Murphy, 1988). But what I want to illustrate is how Brockport is answering that mandate. Due to cutbacks a decade ago, the current length of Brockport's college composition requirement is one semester, although about 25% of our incoming freshmen first receive one to two additional semesters of remedial instruction. On the basis of SAT, TSWE, Regents scores, and high school records students are initially placed in ENL 101 (English for Foreign Students), ENL 102 (Fundamentals of College Composition), ENL 112 (College Compositionthe required course), or become eligible for waiver from the lower division requirement. Potential waiver students complete a 2 hour essay exam that is scored by committee on the basis of the three placement levels noted above. A single-essay test is then administered during the first composition class session to confirm this placement.

Department of Social Policy These instructions contain some general advice on how to write essays, reviews, compositions and lecture diaries. The differences and characteristics of these text types are discussed as well. It should be kept in mind, though, that the instructions might vary and become more precise depending on the course requirements or the distinct instructions of the teacher. Essay Students usually write their essays as part of a course, or as an option for examinations. In the latter case, literature and a provisional headline should be agreed on with a tutor. The purpose of an essay is to review literature from a specific standpoint, and make comparisons of methodology and content. The central problem or purpose of the essay is to be clearly stated, and references are made as appropriate (see pro seminar instructions). Review Composition The Composition is different from a review in the way that the text is also placed in some context, e.g. into a current debate around the issue or around the critique made on the source text. A composition comes thus into question most appropriately when dealing with several comparable texts. Lecture Diary The Lecture Diary draws upon notes made during the lecture. The essential points of the lecture are reported accompanied by comments and analysis. Thus the Lecture Diary is not a review. The comments can be critical, complementing, approving, reflecting or interpreting. The following questions can be addressed:

    THE WRITING PAGE
Composition is an important part of our day!
There are many kinds of writing. We may write creatively, using stories and poems to amuse and entertain ourselves and friends. We may also write informally, in the form of letters, or even spoken words, to share information or tell jokes, or persuade our friends to do something we want them to do. Most school writing, however, fits into a different category.
The purpose of most School Writing is to communicate ideas or answer questions. Such writing requires a whole different set of rules. When we tell a joke or story, it is fun to stretch it out, to get the listener all involved as we get further and further into the material, so we can spring the punch line on our listeners: "You stole my golden arm!" or ". . .because he was stapled to the chicken," are great endings for stories because they are unexpected. School writing requires no such surprises. School Writing (and, by extension, Business Writing) must be succinct, terse, and to the point.
I made a rather simple rubric for grading essays.

"The House Encore Me So" : Emily Dickinson and Jenny Lind O
n July 3, 1851, in what Thomas Johnson describes as the poet's only encounter with any "singer or instrumentalist of note," Emily Dickinson crossed paths for a moment with the most vaunted public female of nineteenth-century America, the singer Jenny Lind ( Letters 122). Dickinson witnessed Lind perform in one of two concerts held near Amherst a year before Lind married and settled in Northampton for her honeymoon. News of the concerts and of Lind's marriage dominated the Springfield Daily Republican, the newspaper of choice in the Dickinson household. The concert Dickinson attended took place in a large church in Northampton on a night that in addition to being memorable for Lind's performance was remarkable for foul weather. Torrential rain apparently did little to deter the arrival of ticketholders who, according to the
