This article is an excerpt from the book College Essays That Made a Difference
"The admissions officers reading your essay want it to prove to them two things. First, they want it to show that you can write at a college level, which means that you have a command of the English language and can use it to craft a cogent written statement. They're not interested in your vocabulary skills, though, so give the thesaurus to your mom and have her hide it. You should be able to write your essay without fancy words whose meaning you don't understand. (And it is so painfully obvious to admissions officers when you don't; they're almost embarrassed for you.) Admissions officers are interested in seeing that you understand sentence and paragraph structure and can pace a narrative. Oh yes, and that you know what a narrative is in the first place. In case you're a little unsure, a narrative is simply a story. And unless you're William Faulkner (who didn't even graduate from college), the story you tell to the admissions officer through your essay needs to be brief, flow logically from one event to the next, and have a convincing conclusion. People usually act consistently (even if they're consistently inconsistent), and their pattern of actions more times than not leads to consistent outcomes. You'd have to be a darn clever wordsmith, for example, to convince a reader that a chain smoker could enter the New York City Marathon and win it just because he "had a lot of heart." Your essay should not require the admissions officer to suspend disbelief. So keep it brief and coherent.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach - An original talent between the Baroque and Classical eras
His music is no longer as well known as that of his father, but in the second half of the 18th century, he was known as the "great Bach": Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), Johann Sebastian's second eldest son and the most famous of all musical Bach sons. For those who are familiar with his music or are interested in becoming acquainted with it, a program devoted exclusively to works by C.P.E. Bach has been directed by Horant H. Hohlfeld and will be available for Pay TV from Unitel in late 1998. An advocate of subjectivity and individual self-expression in music, C.P.E. Bach was quickly hailed as the foremost exponent of the "Sturm und Drang" movement of the late 18th century. Growing out of Baroque music and prefiguring the Romantic era, the "Storm and Stress" period can be seen as a time of transition between the works of J.S. Bach, Handel and Telemann, and those of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. C.P.E. Bach believed in the aesthetic tenets of his time, which demanded that music "touch the heart" and "awaken the passions". His works abound in features that were daring and even bizarre in his day, but which we have become accustomed to through the music of the romantic composers: bold harmonic progressions, interjected sections in contrasting tempo, seamless transitions between movements, abrupt changes of mood, rambling passages that seem to be searching for a goal...

I n the 14th century, English borrowed the word essay from the Middle French word essai . In Middle French, the word meant "to try"; it was a verb, something we do . The word's origins ultimately go back to the Late Latin word exagium do ourselves. W make meaning . When we write, we can do things that will either help or hinder this process of making meaning and conveying it to another mind. Part of the craft of writing is learning to try those techniques that enable us to making meaning for our readers successfully. Remember at least that an essay is to try T
  • A cademic writing has a goal (to try to make meaning and convey it to the reader's mind). Therefore, miscellaneous, random collections of ideas, quotes, details, facts, statistics, etc., will not make for an effective vehicle to convey your idea as a writer. Academic essays often have an argument — explicit or implicit. Even a narrative essay about an important moment in the life of a child can have an implied argument of demonstrating the truth of Wordsworth's line "the Child is the Father of the Man." Miscellaneous, random bits of information really do not prove anything, no matter how suggestive those "factoids" are. The information must be organized and related logically to your thesis, your point, your main idea. That is what we

A s one of the modes of expository writing, the narrative offers writers a chance to think and write about themselves, to explain how their experiences lead to some important realization or conclusion about their lives or about the world in general. Each of us has memories of times that have been meaningful, of times that have taught us lessons about ourselves or others. Through the narrative essay, we have the chance to record those experiences as the supporting evidence to substantiate our new understanding. T wo crucial first steps in planning a narrative essay are selecting an incident worthy of writing about and finding the central, relevant, salient point in that incident. To do this, writers might ask themselves what about the incident provided new insights or awareness primarily for themselves (but possibly for others too). Finally, writers incorporate details which will make the incident real for readers.

Given the needs of students and university and department requirements for students taking required skills courses, the successful ENG 101 essay should demonstrate a student’s writing and thinking capabilities. The ENG 101 essay is written from the writer’s experiences, observations, and a general learned or cultural knowledge. Writer-centered, or writer-based, the ENG 101 essay is dominated by the ideas of the writer, not the ideas of others. Students come to college armed with enough information, imagination, and experience to manage such an essay. As composition teachers, you show students how to shape that information, experience, and knowledge into a coherent, organized, and interesting theme in a composition medium-the essay.
    Audience
Essays can be written in first person or third person, in informal language (the level of language suited for most academic work), in lengths of 500 or more words. At this university, it will not benefit students in your writing classes to have them write papers shorter than 500 words or an essay written in overly colloquial or even conversational language, and worse, allowing them to think that such papers are appropriate for college. On the other hand, class room exercises that show students the difference between writing that engages conversational language and writing that engages informal language are useful for explaining how writers can maintain a consistent tone or maintain a consistent and appropriate measure of distance between the writer and audience.

http://eslbee.com Writing Effective Comparison / Contrast Essays A Comparison or Contrast essay is an essay in which you either compare something or contrast something. A comparison essay is an essay in which you emphasize the similarities, and a contrast essay is an essay in which you emphasize the differences. We use comparison and contrast thinking when deciding which university to attend, which car to buy, or whether to drive a car or take a bus or an airplane to a vacation site. In this section, two classic organizational patterns of a comparison or contrast essay will be discussed. One is called block arrangement of ideas; the other is called point-by-point or alternating arrangement of ideas. Suppose you are interested in showing the differences between airplanes and helicopters. You will then write a contrast composition. One way to arrange your material is to use the block arrangement which is to write about airplanes in one paragraph and helicopters in the next. If you mention a particular point in the airplane paragraph, you must mention the same point in the helicopter paragraph, and in the same order . Study the following outline, which shows this kind of organization.

    Freshman College Composition
    Description of the Examination
The Freshman College Composition examination measures skills required in most first-year English courses. It addresses elements of language and grammar; various types of writing, both formal and informal; and limited analysis and interpretation of short passages of prose and poetry. The examination assumes that candidates know the fundamental principles of rhetoric and can apply the principles of standard written English. In addition, the exam requires familiarity with the research paper and reference skills. An optional essay section, which is required if the institution to which the candidate is applying requests a writing sample, is also available. This optional section requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to write clearly and effectively. Candidates respond to two of three essay topics. An essay on the first topic is required, and candidates are advised to spend 35 to 40 minutes on it. For the second essay, candidates choose one of two topics, on which they should plan to spend 50 to 55 minutes. The essays are scored by faculty at the institution that requires the essay.
