Basic Skill Proficiency
Successful educators competently employ a family of basic academic skills as they plan courses, instruct their students, and communicate with parents and colleagues. Teachers cannot help their students to acquire, practice, and refine these essential skills if they are not proficient in such skills themselves. For this reason the CSB/SJU Education Department requires those seeking acceptance into a Teacher Education Program to meet or exceed fundamental proficiency in basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills (including mechanics, grammar, and composition).
READING
Students accepted as teacher candidates are able to:
  • gather information from different sections of a written passage and recombine it to form a new argument; recognize inferred relationships among ideas that are not explicitly described; recognize correct summaries and other ways of stating information; interpret figurative language;

Course 90UH: Translation from English into Polish and Essay in Polish (15 credits) General description
This course is normally taught over four semesters. All Honours students have a weekly class devoted to translation from English into Polish. Details of the essay writing programme will be provided in class. Aims
This course is intended to:
  • provide students with a thorough training in advanced translation techniques and essay composition;
  • develop and deepen students' awareness of the relationship between language and culture.
  • Learning Objectives
    By the end of this course students will have:
  • acquired the skills necessary to translating prose texts representing a range of styles, notably literary, philosophical and socio-political;
  • refined their stylistic skills in the production of written Polish;
  • developed their reading and interpreting skills in relation to written English texts of suitable complexity;
  • acquired the necessary skills to enable them to make appropriate use of dictionaries and other relevant works of reference.
  • Content of the course
    Students are required to hand in each week for marking a translation of a set English passage. The passages chosen for translation will be taken from a variety of twentieth-century sources, which will for the most part be either works of fiction or non-fiction works dealing with Poland. The translations, which should normally be completed with the help of dictionaries and other available reference works, will be returned and discussed in class.

    Composition Essay When your just sitting in music class, and your music teacher tells you that you have to compose a piece that has a minimum of sixty four bars, and is for not just your instrument but an entire concert band or ensemble, it is very easy to feel overwhelmed. The next day I got my7 hands on some manuscript paper and just stared at the paper for a good twenty minutes trying to think of a good motif to incorporate into my composition. Well I can tell you that staring at paper does absolutely nothing in terms of getting a composition started. So the next day I got out my clarinet and began playing whatever came into my head. A couple motifs came through, some good some not so good but I finally had a start to my piece. My first motif included a descending scale, which I thought added good texture to my piece. I didn’t know exactly how my piece was going to sound at this point, but I knew I had a beginning, so my music teacher came in and made a few suggestions, that would help me make my composition what it is. My composition starts off with melody in the clarinets and builds with the flute and the piccolo.

    By BROCK READ Mark Phillipson held a few part-time jobs with Silicon Valley start-ups before he became a visiting assistant professor of English at Bowdoin College. But it was dumb luck, not technological savvy, that put him on the cutting edge of a blossoming classroom-technology trend. During a conversation two years ago with Bowdoin's Web developer, Mr. Phillipson recited a laundry list of complaints about the technology he had used to liven up class projects in the past. When he asked students to build Web sites about literary themes and traditions, Mr. Phillipson said, he learned that he had to waste time teaching them HTML. And when he required students to chat about reading assignments on an electronic discussion board, he found that they were more likely to post miniature essays than to converse with one another.

Conflicts often seen as contemporary political disputes have deep historic roots. In this region created from the remains of the Ottoman Empire, states and societies still struggle to create an identity as well as free themselves from the colonial Western domination that followed World War II. At the same time they cope with the necessity of adapting to the demands of the modern world. The course selects several topics and countries to provide a focus for understanding the historical forces that drive the present states in the region. Topics include: the Late Ottoman Empire's struggle to resist Western domination, Turkey's drive to establish a secular ethnically Turkish state and its accompanying ethnic atrocities, the Arab experience with colonialism and imperialism, the rise of Arab nationalism and Zionism, Persia's role as an outsider, but Islamic state, state and nation building, Islam and its several forms, Islamic renewal and its political effects, modernism and traditional societies, familial life and the Islamic/Arab woman, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Palestinian-Israeli struggle over Palestine.

    Edgar Varese once gave a definition of music as "organized sound", and this seems like a good place to start, more because of what information such a definition does not give than for what it does give. The definition is somewhat satisfying because it seems to embrace practically anything that is called music, that anyone could conceive of as music and further certainly anything that might be called music in the future. On the other hand it is unsatisfying because there are no clues in the definition as to how music is constructed. On mulling Varese's definition over, the first question that comes to mind is a compound one: what is organization, how is the sound organized? I'll try to consider an answer to that question by starting with the most historically primitive musical notions and moving through increasing complexities to complexities of modern atonal music. Here, I mean "atonal" in its technical sense, not in it's gutter sense of harsh and "dissonant". Undoubtedly, the most primitive musical percept is that of

    August 2003
    Uzbekistan, as one of the postcommunist nation-states emerging in the final decade of the 20th century, presents an interesting case of nation-building at a time when nationhood is an increasingly troubled notion in the world. The increasing force of transnational currents are challenging the ideas of homogeneity and homeland within national borders.
    But Uzbekistan, as a "late" arrival on the world scene of postcolonial nation-states, is basking in the self- delight of its independent nationhood. The Uzbek government has set out to build an essentially monoethnic territorial nation-state, its rhetoric about pluralism notwithstanding.
    It is ironic that the same Communist leadership in Uzbekistan that reluctantly accepted the dissolution of the Soviet Union is now presenting itself as the champion of a restored Uzbek nation. President Islam Karimov, then head of the Soviet government in Uzbekistan, was glaringly silent during the August 1991 coup in Moscow, but quickly changed his posture when it became clear that the end of the Union was inevitable, and that recasting his authority around Uzbek nationalism was to his advantage. Uzbekistan government is still staffed by former members of the local Comunist Party. The Communist Party's structure is based on familial or clan-like solidarity. President Karimov's spin on himself as a true nationalist seems to be uncritically accepted by most Uzbeks.
