History of the International language esperanto. Boulogne Declaration, basic grammar, lexicon and texts.

A Brief History of
The International Language Esperanto
A little over a hundred years ago, a shy, unassuming but greatly enlighted Lithuanian-Jewish eye doctor by the name of Ludovic L. Zamenhof published a small booklet in Russian introducing his creation of many years labour, entitled : The International Language by Dr. Esperanto . Within a few years the booklet was published in Polish, French, German and English and Dr. Zamenhof's modest linguisitic jewel spread far and wide over the following years throughout the world, culminating in the first International Congress in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France in 1905. Among the several hundred participants, Dr. Zamenhof was treated with great admiration and respect and this was only increased when, during his closing speech to the congress, he gave notice that he formally gave up all rights to the language a great believer in the principles of democracy, he believed that the language should evolve through the general consensus of its speakers and proponents, and not at the whim of its inventor. Considering himself only the "originator" ( inicianto ) of the language, he thereafter chose only to offer opinion and give advice and therefore shared the esteem of expertise with the growing number of talented lexicographers, grammarians and writers who were professionally interested in the language.

Description: This course will present the origin, history, and basic grammar of the Esperanto language. Students will acquire speaking, writing and reading skills through active participation in small discussion groups, writing of compositions, and reading of short stories. Local Esperantists will be invited to participate in the discussions to demonstrate the utility of the language. The goals of the seminar are to introduce students to the idea of a world language as a means of enhancing communication and understanding between peoples and to introduce them to the beautiful structural simplicity of the Esperanto language. Format: The class will meet for 1 1/4 hours, twice each week, for the first eight weeks of the quarter. Weekly reading assignments will form the basis for small group discussion in Esperanto. Four compositions in Esperanto of increasing length (maximum 2 typed double spaced pages) will be assigned, one approximately every two weeks. Finally, a written grammar exercise will be assigned each week. Each week will commence with a discussion of topics such as the world language problem, efforts to develop a world language, etc. Teach Yourself Esperanto (J. Cresswell and J. Hartley, NTC Publishing, 1992) will be the required text. Students will be graded on participation during in-class discussion (1/3), the written compositions (1/3), and the grammatical exercises (1/3).
About the Instructor: Professor Emeritus Studer has focused his research on the design of agricultural machinery. His interest in Esperanto stems from a lifelong interest in languages. Esperantistoj legu mian Esperantan paghon I speak Esperanto and use it for international communication. If you live in or are visiting the Champaign-Urbana area and you speak Esperanto, I'd be very pleased to hear from you. I'm the main contact point for the East-Central Illinois Esperanto Club (sadly inactive these days). Among my Esperanto activities, from mid-1996 through mid-1997 I was editor of EsperantoUSA , the newsletter of ELNA , the Esperanto-League for North America. I also wrote " Dolaroj kaj eÅroj grandbilete " which appeared in the January 1999 issue of Monato , the monthly Esperanto-language news magazine. "This is an exciting time for Esperanto", says editor of Esperanto Britain, Ian Fantom, "There is a growing awareness of the language problem, and of the problems arising when you impose one culture on another. Esperanto has really sprung to life in recent years for many people who in the past would normally be just practising the language in local clubs, and who would only occasionally use the language 'for real', when travelling abroad, or accepting foreign guests. The arrival of the Internet, cheap voice communication, and low-cost travel are now encouraging thousands of people to use Esperanto on a daily basis".

ARTICLES: Esperanto! Can you hear the drums, Esperanto? If the Christmas season has you feeling all peace to the world, then why not consider taking a course in Dr. L.L. Zamenhof's manufactured language? The lingo was devised in 1887 in Poland and is estimated to be spoken by more than a million people globally. Esperanto's raison d'etre was to become a second language for all peoples of the world - a common denominator that they could communicate in without resorting to Pidgin English.
"My wife has collapsed. Help me, for the love of God!" "Ah, Eenglish - Manchester United? Yorkshire pudding?" Esperanto was designed to be as simple and easy to learn as possible. The quirks of grammar and spelling that plague other languages have been ironed out and every Esperanto word is pronounced exactly as it is spelled. There are 28 letters in the Esperanto alphabet, including c, g, h, j, s and u, which were introduced so that every sound could be represented by just one letter, instead of having combinations of sounds like the "ch" sound in chowder.

Esperanto was invented by an oculist from Bia l ystok, Dr Ludwig L Zamenhof (aka "Doctor Hopeful", hence the name) in 1887. Even its proponents estimate there to be barely a million Esperanto speakers in the world (largely Central/Eastern Europe); cf Albanian with almost five million, Mandarin Chinese with 1000 million, and English with (depending how you count) 500 to 1500 million. Even Klingon appears to be outselling Esperanto round here. Most people I know despise Esperanto, but largely for daft reasons - "Everyone speaks English nowadays anyway", "It sounds a bit foreign", "It has no cultural identity of its own", etc. I, on the other hand, dislike it for being:

Every year, our world seems smaller. Ships carry a thousand items between countries. Jets carry passengers across oceans and around the world. Satellites bring us live television coverage from Europe and Asia. Every year, Americans in every walk of life communicate more and more with people of other countries. One barrier remains... As a result of this tremendous increase in contacts with the outside world, Americans are realizing that there is still a major barrier to international communication the language barrier! Americans have long heard the cliche that "Wherever you go, people speak English." In fact, at most ten percent of the world speaks English! Often, in other countries, only people in the best hotels of the largest cities can use English, and even they are often not very fluent. Anyone who has visited a foreign country and struggled with the language barriers understands this. Americans are at last discovering what the rest of the world has long known: there is a real need for an international language. Fortunately, there is such a language...

Esperanto: La Internacia Lingvo Esperanto is an international language, invented in 1887 by Ludwig Zamenhof. It was designed as a 'brother tongue', to supplement existing national languages and encourage greater understanding and communication across linguistic barriers. Why learn Esperanto? From an educational viewpoint, Esperanto is an interesting introduction to how languages work and express different ideas. Because it was designed to be much easier to learn than an evolved national language, students typically find they learn good Esperanto around four times quicker than other national languages. This helps build confidence. Esperanto also develops the learner's cognate base for learning other languages. Esperanto Alphabet Esperanto has a number of unique letters/sounds, generally written as two-letter combinations, though circumflexed letters do occasionally appear in print. Esperanto - The International Language
In 1887, Polish physician L.L. Zamenhof published a book under his pseudonym called Doctor Esperanto's International Language and Complete Handbook . This initial text, which was both a tutorial and the manifesto for a new social movement, spread the word of a new international language known as Esperanto. At the time, there had been dozens of international languages already created. Many of these artificial languages were like Esperanto in the fact that they were created to be an axillary language, that is, a second language for people around the word in order to allow for improved global communication. Of all of the artificial languages, it was Esperanto which caught on the best. Though today there are only between a few hundred thousand and a few million speakers of Esperanto around the word, those devoted to advancing the goal of the international language are as dedicated as ever. There over 100 newspapers, magazines, and journals printed in Esperanto and many books are written in or translated into the language by devotees of the language and its movement.

Esperanto as a Second Language? Well, there was a time U.S. military commanders thought that was a good idea, as these excerpts from an Army field manual show. Seems the brass wanted the would-be international language to be used by one side during training exercises. In fact, "Aggressor" referred to a fictitious nation created by the Army to serve as its opponent in these "war games." We doubt Latin was considered for the foe's language, but Klingon would have been a better choice. (13 pages) How you say "Adios, Osama" in Esperanto? Only a few clams: The Smoking Gun's first book.
