    A PHILOLOGIST ON ESPERANTO
Actually it seems to me, too, that technical improvement of the machinery, either aiming at greater simplicity and perspicuity of structure, or at greater internationality, or what not, tends (to judge by recent examples) to destroy the "humane" or aesthetic aspect of the invented idiom. This apparently unpractical aspect appears to be largely overlooked by theorists; though I imagine it is not really unpractical, and will have ultimately great influence on the prime matter of universal acceptance. N**, for instance, is ingenious, and easier than Esperanto, but hideous "factory product" is written all over it, or rather, "made of spare parts" and it has no gleam of the individuality, coherence and beauty, which appear in the great natural idioms, and which do appear to a considerable degree (probably as high a degree as is possible in an artificial idiom) in Esperanto a proof of the genius of the original author... My advice to all who have the time or inclination to concern themselves with the international langauage movement would be: "Back Esperanto loyally."

Klingon and Esperanto: The Odd Couple?
    by Glen Proechel
First published in Esperanto U.S.A. in 1994
ELNA member G. F. Proechel is perhaps better known to the world at large as the gentlemen who in 1993 hosted the first Klingon language camp in Minnesota. Currently he and another ELNA member, Mark Shoulson, are in the news for their project to translate the Bible into Klingon. And what is Klingon, you may ask? Another Ido? Another Loglan? Read on ... There's a new star rising in the east and it isn't the green star of Esperanto nor is it the star of Bethlehem. It is the unlikely home star ( juH Hov ) of Klingon, a made-for-TV-and-movies language that is spoken by the science-fiction warrior race from the Klingon Empire of Star Trek fame. Klingon is an artificial language which made its debut in 1984 in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . The Klingon Dictionary which was written by Dr. Mark Okrand is now in its second printing with some 250,000 copies in print. In 1992 the Klingon Language Institute was formed and already has some 600 members worldwide. A second organiztion of Klingon fan clubs is the Klingon Assault Group which also encourages students in the use of the Klingon language by its 2500 members. Last summer I took up the study of Klingon, decided to run a Klingon Language Camp in Red Lake Falls, MN, and became an instant celebrity. While participation in the two-week camp was modest, the publicity was incredible with journalists from TV, radio, newspapers and magazines from around the world vying for coverage rights.

    What is Esperanto?
Esperanto is a beautiful and expressive language created in 1887 to be an easy-to-learn second language for the entire world. It is still spoken and written today by millions of people all over the planet, and with the proliferation of the Internet, the popularity of Esperanto has exploded. It is very easy to learn because, unlike ethnic or national languages, it has a consistent system of grammar, spelling, and pronunciation; it also has no irregular verbs, all of which makes it four times faster to learn.
Why is it faster to learn?
Esperanto's creator Doctor L. L. Zamenhof based it on many different languages including English, Spanish, German, Italian, and French so that the words would be familiar to as many people as possible and make the language politically and culturally neutral. Along with the goal of easy global communication, Esperanto was created to preserve natural languages and promote world peace.
Who can I speak it with?

The adoption of one international auxiliary language would not only reduce expenses and administrative work but would also do much to foster the spirit of unity. We suggest that a high-level commission be appointed, whose members come from different countries and different disciplines (e.g. linguistics, economic and social sciences, education, the media), to look into the question of selecting an international auxiliary language and a common script. We assume that in the long run the world will be forced to decide upon a single auxiliary language and a common script - complementing the existing languages - that will be taught in all the schools of the world. Its aim would be to facilitate the transition to a global society by improving communication between nations, reducing costs in trade, administration and other worldwide affairs, and in general by creating more cordial relationships between the diverse peoples of the world

    ESPERANTO (1185 words)
An international language designed for ease of learning and intended as a common, neutral second language for all. Launched in Warsaw in 1887 as "the international language of Doctor Esperanto" (ps. of L.L. Zamenhof, 1859-1917), Esperanto is the only *planned language to have achieved relatively wide use; between five and fifteen million people are estimated to have studied it, although regular users probably do not exceed one percent of this number. Most speakers live in Europe, but the movement has a long history in countries such as China, Japan and Brazil, and active users can be found in most countries of the world. There is ample anecdotal and statistical evidence of Esperanto's relative ease of acquisition for speakers of both European and non-European languages, although any level of mastery clearly demands greater time and effort from the latter. Among the factors that appear to increase learnability are the close relationship between written and spoken forms, the productivity of the word-building system, the low frequency of irregularities and idiomatic expressions, and the relative openness of the speech community to new learners. Attempts at quantitative comparison have generally estimated the rate of progress in Esperanto as four to twelve times that of other second languages taught under classroom conditions. An early study is Thorndike et al. 1933; good overviews are provided by Maxwell 1988, Fantini and Reagan 1992, and Corsetti and La Torre 1995.
