World Esperanto Congress. The 90th World Esperanto Congress took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 23rd to 30th July 2005, with about 2300 participants from about 62 countries from all around the world, talking together without interpreters!
This congress took place 100 years after the first World Esperanto Congress (Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, 1905). The congress took the opportunity to discuss the whole series of 90 world congresses. Through decades characterised by social changes, political troubles and wars, the congresses retained their most outstanding feature - that of a forum for people to meet people, with a strong desire to overcome the barriers of nationality and ideology. Several congress sessions were dedicated to discussing the usefulness of the congresses to those who take part. Many emphasised the educational value - not only for increasing knowledge about various subjects, but also for awareness of intercultural communication at the most personal level. The participants demonstrated their continuing determination to work together with good will to improve cooperation between the peoples of the world.

Career opportunities Supporting Multilingualism - Esperanto as a Practical Tool Mr. Van Oostendorp (University of Amsterdam) Mr. Van Oostendorp began by recognising that in contrast to other speakers, his colleague Mr. Schubert and he were not offering a technical solution to the linguistic problems of the community. Rather, he intended to present the Esperanto language as a practical tool for overcoming communication and language learning barriers. He did not see Esperanto as the symbol of a utopian idealism, as it was so often presented, but rather as a means of improving quality in language learning and interpretation. Mr. Van Oostendorp was to discuss the propaedeutic value of learning Esperanto, and Mr. Schubert would then discuss the practical applications of Esperanto to interpretation. The Esperanto language was first published in 1887 by Dr. L.L. Zamenhof. It may be used in all areas of human communication. It has a very small number of native speakers, so there is no real native speaker norm. It dispenses with the historically grown irregularities of natural languages, replacing them with a regularised grammar and vocabulary.

    Languages Esperanto
Esperanto Difficulty: * This man-made language was created by Dr. L.L. Zamenhof in 1887. It was designed to be an international language, that is, many people' second language, and not to replace any national tongue. It was also designed to be an easy-to-learn second language, and is apparently here to stay and is by far the most popular of the man-made languages, though not without its critics. Esperanto means hopeful, and its speakers are hopeful that it will be accepted for what it is. Because Esperantists (Esperanto speakers) are dispersed throughout the world, it sometimes unites people who speak vastly different languages (i.e. China and Mexico) and who do not necessarily speak English well if at all.
Introduction Usefulness Beauty Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the rhythm of Esperanto reminds me of Italian and the cadence of the spoken language feels like Latin mass, with the difference being that it is easier to understand. It is beautiful in its poetic rhythm, and logic. Chic factor This seems to be a touchy subject among Esperantists, because many speakers are intellectuals, by that I mean, intelligent, highly well-read, and somewhat independent in spirit. Esperanto has received a lot of criticism (much of it undeserved) for the fact that it aims to be neutral, and not allied with any nation. As a result, some Esperanto proponents are a little defensive on the subject, but if you try to learn it, other speakers will welcome and encourage you to succeed. In my experience, I have met only hard-working, intelligent, and genuinely helpful volunteer tutors who really want Esperanto to be respected as a language should be.

Although (or maybe because?) it has existed for quite many years, it has never gone through an official Usenet newsgroup creation process and is theoretically an `INET-only' group. This is an undesirable situation, as not all messages are delivered to all sites, and eventually even the existence of the group itself may be in danger. We therefore wish to remedy this anomaly and make this already existing group "official" conforming to the standard creation procedure in the "Big 8" Usenet hierarchy. The group soc.culture.esperanto has existed since before 1990 and has today a daily traffic of ca. 40 articles (average over 2nd half of 1996, counted in DejaNews).
