Photo Credit: Mark van Manen, Vancouver Sun. Ann Talbot, who has been in the education field for 23 years and has spent the last decade in teacher training, gives classes at Kwantlen College in Richmond that lead to certification as a teacher of English as a second language. When I applied for a job teaching English as a second language to help pay the rent while I was in school, the company doing the hiring was only interested in the fact I could speak English. A lot has changed since that time and today teaching English as a second language to adults has grown to become a full-time future for many young people, for people looking to change careers, and for others who simply want to keep busy in semi-retirement and give back to the community. The field has spawned a range of educational opportunities and credentials, from the most basic entry-level training to full-time degrees and graduate work.

Stricter standards required for teachers of English as a Second Language In October 1998, Dr. Razika Sanaoui presented TESL Ontario (the association of Teachers of English as a Second Language in the province of Ontario, Canada) with recommendations for a Protocol and Uniform Certification Standards for Non-Credit Adult ESL Instructors. Dr. Sanaoui is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of York who wrote a number of publications on second language teaching, learning and acquisition. In addition, she has undertaken an extensive research on computer communications in second language acquisition. Her recommendations were discussed, analyzed and finally supported by the Steering Committee of the TESL Ontario. The Steering Committee, in turn, was responsible for setting up and implementing all the certification requirements. It is worth mentioning that TESL Ontario is a part of a nationwide ESL organization called TESL Canada. TESL Canada has its branches in each province in Canada. TESL Canada is the

Search English as 2nd Language Guide Picks - Top 5 Teacher Resource Books for ESL Adult Learners As any ESL teacher knows, having a grab bag of enjoyable learning activities helps to liven up any ESL class. These activities are useful for teaching inductively, filling gaps and introducing topics. Here is a list of five books that are sure to help you times of need. Grammar Games
Teaching grammar through games has proven to be one of the most successful methods of helping students acquire grammar skills. "Grammar Games" by Mario Rinvolucri succeeds exceptionally well while encouraging students to enjoy themselves. This book is my top choice because it's a great way to expand on key concepts that can be rather dry at times.
Great Ideas : Listening and Speaking Activities for Students of American English

"Great Ideas" Leo Jones, Victoria F. Kimbrough provides realistic situations for ESL learners of American English. Situations and speakers are taken from daily life confronting learners with 'authentic' accents and providing help in learning English they can use on a daily basis.

Adult ESL: Politics, Pedagogy, and Participation in Classroom and Community Programs provides a comprehensive description of the state of adult ESL programs with a collection of twenty papers addressing diverse issues concerning adult ESL and literacy training in North America. The papers range from first person accounts of struggles to obtain and maintain government funding for adult ESL to practical discussions of critical pedagogy in action. The next three chapters of the politics section focus on feminist issues in ESL and adult literacy. In one of the few papers to look outside the U.S., Bonny Norton describes her diary-based study of the language-learning experiences of five women immigrants in Canada. Trudy Smoke also provides a case study of student identity and change. Finally, Stephanie Vandrick provides a good, albeit brief, introduction to feminist theory and research as applicable to ESL teaching. Unfortunately, her description of a feminist pedagogy (versus a critical pedagogy) is somewhat less clear. Basically, "feminist pedagogy" has more to do with a perspective, rather than a methodology. As a result, perhaps, Vandrick appears occasionally to use theoretical terminology which could be discussed in a more simple manner.

  • The majority of employed adult teachers work part time and receive no benefits; many unpaid volunteers also teach these subjects. Opportunities for teachers of English as a Second Language are expected to be very good, as the number of immigrants seeking classes is expected to increase. Demand for self-enrichment courses is expected to rise as more people embrace lifelong learning.

Nature of the Work Back to Top Adult literacy and remedial education teachers self-enrichment teachers , unlike other adult education teachers, teach courses that students take for personal enrichment, such as cooking, dancing, creative writing, golf or tennis, photography, or personal finance.

Meeting the English (and Other Language) Learning Needs of Adults
Solid Adult and IEP Session Strand at KATESOL 2004
KATESOL is the professional organization in the state of Kansas for ESL teachers and others who work with English language learners from Pre-K to 12 as well as adult and college intensive English programs. One challenge for KATESOL has been to organize the annual conference so that topics and issues of relevance to all constituencies are reflected in the conference program. The 2004 KATESOL Conference, March 12-13, in Hays, Kansas, will come very close to achieving this goal. In addition to a number of sessions of interest to public school teachers and administrators, there are also presentations of relevance directly to the important work done by adult educators and those who teach in intensive programs at universities throughout the state. It is hard to imagine anyone who has not heard of Dr. Stephen Krashen, who speaks at Friday's opening ceremony, on the evening of March 12th. Dr. Krashen's research and tireless efforts on behalf of language learners are an inspiration to every ESL, foreign language and regular classroom teacher, instructor and professor.

The Engaged Classroom
The Engaged Classroom is a combination of video and Web-based activities. The series was developed at Western Illinois University with funding provided through a U.S. Department of Education Star Schools grant. It follows the Engaged Learning model by using video, small group discussion, large group interaction, and individual projects to help the classroom teachers understand how to incorporate the Engaged Learning Model into their specific educational setting. The Engaged Classroom has been used with a large number of classroom teachers to meet their Engaged Training needs. The series contains three videotapes: (1) "Re-Evaluating Assessment," (2) "Developing Student Potential," and (3) "Emerging Teacher Roles."
