FAQ 1. What are the differences among these acronyms: ESL, TEFL, TESOL, and ELT? ESL (English as a Second Language) is still the most popular term for describing this area of language study. Essentially any English language teacher, whether abroad or in the U.S. is considered an ESL teacher. However, sometimes professionals may want to distinguish between a student who is learning English in his or her native country and one who is living in the U.S., England, Australia, etc. Therefore, many professionals may describe a student who is studying English in Moscow as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) student. A student studying English in Washington D.C. would be considered an ESL (English as a Second Language student). TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages) is the name of a large professional organization based in Alexandria, Virginia which is dedicated to assisting ESL teachers internationally. There are also many local TESOL affiliates, such as WATESOL (Washington TESOL), CATESOL (California TESOL) and Mexico TESOL. Also, a Masters in TESOL is the standard name for an advanced degree in English language teaching.

Pictures from Teaching in China 1988 - 1991
William R. Eubank
Between February 1988 and March of 1991 I lived and taught in the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong. I went to China to teach and took every opportunity to teach that was offered to me - so there were many opportunities - in both formal and informal situations. I came to China under the sponsorship of University Language Services. The pictures on this page are between 8K and 56K in size and load pretty fast. I will try to add others later as I get them scanned in. Your picture will be taken while you are a "foreign guest" in China. Yunnan Province has a population of about 35,000,000 Han and minority people - the number of foreign semi-long term residents was about 70 in 1989 - you may or may not be aware of your picture (18K) being taken - often your students will bring a copy after publication. Kunming Teacher Training College did a little article (10K) about me in the school paper when I arrived. My students were from the rural counties of Yunnan. They were training to be English teachers for middle schools and high schools located outside of the provincial capital of Kunming. Many of the students expressed the idea that their college years would probably be some of their best since they knew when they returned to their villages that there might be little opportunity to travel back to the capital city. The school had a very modern language lab (8K) from Japan that I used much of the time. During each school holiday, I had the opportunity to travel to rural areas and visit the hometowns and future schools of my students. Most of my classes had between 30 and 40 students. Many elementary classes I visited had up to 50 students.

Question of the Month: What are SPLs and how are they related to the National Reporting System (NRS)? Answer: The Student Performance Levels (SPLs) are descriptions of English language proficiency levels for adult non-native speakers of English. The SPLs were developed in the mid-1980s as part of the Mainstream English Language Training (MELT) project under the Office of Refugee Resettlement of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

This is an article about the author's experience teaching a class of immigrants to the United States of America and a description of some of the techniques the author used.
Introduction
According to the U.S. Census data, of the 26.4 million immigrants in the U.S., almost 80 percent are adults (Starr, 2001). Consequently, English as a Second Language (ESL) has become the fastest growing segment in federally funded adult education programs (Pugsley, 1998). Many of the adult ESL learners do not have much schooling in their home country, and therefore, lack appropriate study skills important for academic success. In addition, they tend to face tremendous financial distress and family responsibilities that oftentimes prevent them from concentrating on their studies. Teaching them can be a significant challenge for the teacher and curriculum developer.
The Class
All the students had immigrated into the U.S. as adults and their highest educational attainment was high school. All had completed basic and intermediate ESL courses at a government-sponsored program. This course aimed to teach job-related skills as well as other essential everyday life skills. The following are some strategies that I found to be effective in teaching adult ESL learners.

TESL Training
Training, Professional Development and Certification Throughout the year there are a number of opportunities for people who want training to teach ESL or provide settlement support to immigrants. Teaching ESL (TESL) to adults is a field of educational expertise with its own body of professional knowledge and skills. Programs generally look for a combination of training and experience when hiring staff. People who want to become Adult ESL teachers can earn TESL certificates or degrees from several post-secondary institutions in Manitoba. For practicing teachers there are also a number of professional development (PD) opportunities offered each year through professional organizations. People who volunteer with ESL students can also participate in special training sessions offered throughout the year. Training sessions for people working in the settlement field may also be available each year.

Frequently Asked Questions for Adult ESL Educators What kind of certification or training is required to teach ESL to adults? To teach ESL in the K-12 system in Illinois, a teaching certificate plus an endorsement in ESL is required. However, to teach ESL in an adult education program in Illinois (usually a community college or a community-based organization), there are no state requirements. Each school or organization will have its own requirements. Commonly, a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or Linguistics is preferred, along with teaching experience. Preference may also be given to teachers who hold a certificate issued by a well-known training program, such as the Cambridge certificate. Because of the high demand for ESL teachers in Illinois, some programs may hire teachers who hold only a bachelor's degree and who have no specialized training in ESL. These programs may require or encourage inexperienced teachers to attend local professional development workshops offered through the Adult Learning Resource Center or other sources. Ongoing professional development is highly recommended for all ESL teachers.
