  • Footnotes (Education/learning English)
The main purpose of a footnote is to acknowledge the source of any direct or indirect quotation of any idea, opinion, or factual material, which you have taken (not necessarily in quotation) from another author or authority. Footnotes can also be used to expand, or supplement, statements made in the body of your essay with information, which is peripheral to your main argument but still considered relevant.
It is most important that you supply sufficient information in your footnotes to enable the reader (or marker in this case) to independently consult the sources used. The information taken from fluid electronic archives, as might be found on the Internet, present a problem here; but you must always include in your reference the date you accessed a particular site or archive.
Insert a number in your text, at the end of a sentence, for each footnote. Make the numbers run consecutively for each page. This means the first footnote on each page will be numbered one. Place the footnotes in numerical order at the bottom of the page where the reference occurs. If you are using a word processor it is probably best to run the numerical order through the entire essay.

Placement:
Like native speakers, ESL students will have varying degrees of proficiency in reading and writing, and will not benefit from a reading and writing course if they are not placed correctly. Both NS and ESL students who are frustrated by reading and writing assignments that are too difficult may appear to be uncooperative, or may try to use inappropriate assistance.
Academic writing:
Both NS and ESL students may have little or no experience with the kind of academic writing required in college courses, especially if they were not educated in college preparatory program in the United States.
Vocabulary:
The development of a more academic vocabulary is also necessary for both ESL and NS students, and one of the best ways to accomplish this is through reading. Both kinds of students should be encouraged to read widely: newspapers, novels, and magazines are a few sources in print; online reading can help encourage speed and develop vocabulary, so suggesting links to interesting sites of any kind can help your students in their vocabulary development. Additionally, teachers may want to require that students keep a journal of their outside readings. A vocabulary notebook or journal section is good; class lists online can be interesting, too.

Advanced Techniques for Discussion and Active Learning This session is for instructors who have some experience teaching in discussion mode or other active formats. It will provide an opportunity to explore a range of structures for class activities. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a description of their favorite activity and/or one with which they would like help. Designing and Managing Collaborative Learning The use of student groups is common in many types of courses, including labs, recitations, and lectures. In this session, participants explore issues of planning assignments, forming and managing groups, and fairly assessing learning in order to help decide when and how to best use this teaching method. (Can be done in a one- or two-part version) Teaching Large Classes How do you actively involve students in the class when it is impossible even to know all of their names? How do you provide feedback on learning when simply collecting homework is a major strategic operation? Teaching large classes introduces a unique, and sometimes overwelming, set of challenges in addition to the everyday challenges of teaching. Fortunately, many who teach large classes at Ohio State have developed effective strategies for overcoming these obstacles and engaging students in learning. We invite you to join us in this discussion to ask questions, share successes, and learn from each other. We also hope to capture your ideas in a resource guide that will be made available to others.

Summary:
This book discusses how ESL college students in the academic literature/composition classroom use various learning styles in their reading and writing. Tucker uses the research of contrastive rhetoric to help explain why ESL students choose certain learning strategies to read and write in the ESL classroom. Each chapter is a case study of one of her students and the progress he/she makes throughout English 105, a required course. Included are issues relating to learner motivation, composition and grammatical issues, more specifically, how to handle error correction, classroom techniques and syllabus design. The study follows five individual students and their struggle as they begin to understand how to use correct English grammar and form and at the same time retain their own individual approach and cultural diversity that brings such richness to the ESL students' compositions. Frequently Asked Questions
I don’t speak English very well. Can I study at your school?
Yes, you can. We have an ESL (English as a Second Language) program for students like you. You will learn to speak – and read, and write, and understand English for living and studying in the United States. Do I have to take TOEFL or SLEP to come to your school?
No, you do not have to take any tests to apply to Putney. We will ask you to write something in your own words and we will ask you to send a cassette of yourself speaking in English. But we do not use this information to decide if you can come to Putney. We use it to decide your level. Other information about you, like your grades at school and your recommendations, helps us decide if you will be accepted at Putney. How many levels of ESL do you have? What is the lowest level and what is the highest?
We have 3 levels of ESL. We call them ESL A, ESL B, and ESL C. ESL A is the most beginning level. It is for students who have only studied English a little bit. ESL B is the intermediate class. ESL C is the advanced class. You can read more about these classes in the course catalog. What would I study in ESL classes?
