RELATED STORIES, SITES February 6, 1999 Web posted at: 3:29 p.m. EST (2029 GMT) ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (CNN) Fierce fighting broke out early Saturday between Eritrean and Ethiopian forces along the disputed border in the Horn of Africa. Government officials on both sides confirmed that intense fighting broke out in the border region of Badme, a theater of conflict during a brief land and air war last year. Each side accused the other of firing first. The Eritrean government said there were hundreds of Ethiopian casualties, but that couldn't be independently confirmed. Eritrean forces attacked Ethiopian positions at dawn Saturday at the Badme-Sheraro front, 730 kilometers (450 miles) north of the capital of Addis Ababa, Ethiopian government spokeswoman Selome Tadesse said.

Ethiopia may accept peace plan with Eritrea
    June 4, 1998
Web posted at: 2:29 p.m. EDT (1829 GMT) ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (CNN) Ethiopia indicated Thursday it will agree to a peace plan with Eritrea brokered by the United States and Rwanda. The plan is aimed at resolving a violent border dispute between Ethiopia and Eritrea, two of the United States' closest African allies. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Susan Rice said that Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was likely to accept the plan after consultation with his Cabinet. The European Union and the Organization of African Unity have both voiced support for the proposal, but Rice did not mention any Eritrean response. The two nations have been on the brink of war since last month, when Eritrean forces clashed with Ethiopian troops.

Eritrean Cuisine Parts of Eritrea are very fertile and produce good crops of cereals, peanuts vegetables and fruit. The selection of vegetables and fruits available on the markets is seasonal. Eritrean farmers raise goats, cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens for the local and Asmara markets. The animals are slaughtered at the meat slaughtering plant. They have been inoculated and have undergone careful inspection. Fish consumption is rather low in Eritrea, as Eritreans are traditionally meat-eaters. The Red Sea is home to more than 1,000 species of fish, including tuna, red snapper, kingfish, sardines and other prime food fish. There are also large stocks of high-value species, such as lobster, crab, oyster, and shrimp. Most meals are eaten at a low table, shared from a large plate with fellow diners, with the hands. Before eating, one of the women of the household will bring a basin of water where to wash the hands. People eat (in Tigrinya: bla ) together, sharing the food

Ethiopia and Eritrea are mountainus countries, and the highest peak is Ras Dejen in the Semien Mountains of Ethiopia (4543 m). At least seven other mountains reach above 4000 m. The two contries are located in Sudanian and Sahelian vegetation zones, and they should therefore be expected to have a dry climate and a vegetation dominated by woodland, wooded grassland and subdesert scrub. While this is true for the lowlands, the Ethiopian and Eritrean highlands have a climate and a vegetation much modified by altitude, and much more plant diversity than should be expected. One of the collaborators of the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea, Prof. Chr. Puff, Vienna, has made a number of photographs of the Semien Mountains available, both from the
