New York, September 20, 2001
-Eritrean authorities have suspended all the country's privately owned newspapers until further notice, the state radio station announced on Tuesday.
Newspapers affected by the suspension order include Meqaleh Setit Tiganay Zemen Wintana , and Admas . It is unclear what prompted the decision, which surprised both Eritrean and foreign observers.
CPJ sources in the capital, Asmara, saw the move as an attempt by President Isayas Afeworki's government to suppress independent news coverage of an ongoing state crackdown on opponents of the People's Front for Democracy and Justice, the party that has ruled Eritrea since independence from Ethiopia in 1993.
According to Eritrea's ambassador to the United States, however, the papers were suspended for failing to comply with media licensing requirements under the country's press laws. Embassy officials said authorities had warned the publishers several times before today's suspension order.
In a telephone interview, Ambassador Girma Asmeron told CPJ that the papers would remain out of print while authorities investigate their current licenses. "This procedure will be transparent and in accordance with the laws of the country," he said.

Eritrea: Government Spies on Evangelicals
From: 2004, Voice of the Martyrs
Eritrea's outlawed Protestants confirmed this week that their neighbors are being hired to report to security agents any gatherings of evangelical believers in their communities. Police are rewarded with special benefits, including exemption from military service and allotments of sugar and flour. Since May 2002, when the government ordered Eritrea's 12 independent Pentecostal and charismatic churches closed, their 20,000 members have gathered secretly in small groups in private homes. Hundreds have been arrested for holding worship services, possessing Bibles, or witnessing about their faith. Currently at least 286 Eritrean evangelicals are known to be imprisoned in nine different locations in the country. Protestant pastors say the Department of Religious Affairs has made no progress toward the official registration of their churches.

Eritrea: Human Rights
AfricaFocus Bulletin May 27, 2004 (040527) (Reposted from sources cited below)
Editor's Note
Releasing its annual human rights report this week, Amnesty International charged that the U.S.-led "war on terror" has contributed to sacrificing human rights and turning a blind eye to abuses, without enhancing security. Among the African governments that has most enthusiastically embraced the anti-terror rationale is Eritrea, the subject of a new Amnesty International report released to coincide with the country's 13th anniversary of independence on May 24. The sharp escalation in repression of internal critics and journalists by the Eritrean government highlighted in the Amnesty report excerpted below came in September 2001, only a week after 9/11. This week, the Eritrean Ambassador to the United States, speaking at a Washington press conference, cited his government's strong support for the U.S. campaign against global terrorism. He also quoted U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who visited Asmara in December 2002 and affirmed that the U.S. could "benefit from [Eritrea's] knowledge and experience" [in fighting terrorism]. ERITREA: Government denies soliciting for Nigerian mediation
NAIROBI, 8 Mar 2004 (IRIN) - The Eritrean government has denied soliciting for Nigerian mediation in its border conflict with neighbouring Ethiopia.
In a statement, the Eritrean embassy in Nigeria said contrary to reports in the Nigerian daily, The Guardian, on 3 March, the Eritrean government had not sought any assistance from that country to intervene in the matter, because it regarded the April 2002 ruling of the boundary commission as "final and binding".
Nigerian Foreign Minister Oluyemi Adeneji was quoted by international media last week as saying that Eritrea had asked his country to intervene in the dispute. "We do not know the source, particularly as it was not signed, or the underlying motivation," the Eritrean statement said of the article entitled "Eritrea seeks Nigeria's help to avert war with Ethiopia".
"The article was a misrepresentation of the facts," it added.
