GOVERNMENT Eritrea's Government faced formidable challenges following independence. Beginning with no constitution, no judicial system, and an education system in shambles, it was required to build institutions of government from scratch. On May 19, 1993, the PGE issued a proclamation regarding the reorganization of the government. The government was reorganized, and after a national, freely contested election, the National Assembly, which chose Isaias as President of the PGE, was expanded to include both EPLF and non-EPLF members. The EPLF established itself as a political party, the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ). The PGE declared that during a 4-year transition period, and sooner if possible, it would draft and ratify a constitution, prepare a law on political parties, prepare a press law, and carry out elections for a constitutional government. In March 1994, the PGE created a constitutional commission charged with drafting a constitution flexible enough to meet the current needs of a population suffering from 30 years of civil war as well as those of the future, when prospective stability and prosperity would change the political landscape. Commission members traveled throughout the country and to Eritrean communities abroad holding meetings to explain constitutional options to the people and to solicit their input. A new constitution was ratified in 1997 but has not been implemented, and general elections have not been held. The government had announced that National Assembly elections would take place in December 2001, but those were postponed and new elections have not been rescheduled.

Eritrea: Government seizes vehicles, mine-clearance stopped 24 June 2005 Eritrea: - Mine clearance has now stopped in Eritrea, one of Africa's worst mine-affected nations, because the government seized in April 40 vehicles that had been in use by the national mine-action agency as part of a UN demining assistance program. The government also has announced a significant downsizing of an international program, in place since 2002, that provided technical expertise in combating the country’s massive landmine problem. An estimated 2,000,000 mines are thought to have been laid during the course of decades of conflict, including the 1998-2000 war with Ethiopia, the 30-year war of independence with Ethiopia (1961-1991) and World War II, ranking Eritrea "...among the most mine affected nations in the world", according to Don Lieber, an Eritrea researcher for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. Habtom Seguid, the deputy general manager of the Eritrean Demining Agency (EDA), the national demining authority in Eritrea, confirmed that his agency issued a "stand-down" order to government mine clearance teams in early April as a result of the government’s seizure of demining vehicles.

Eritrea: Government critics and journalists held in incommunicado detention
Amnesty International today called on the Eritrean authorities to immediately and unconditionally end the unlawful detention of dozens of prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders, as it released a new report: 'Eritrea: Arbitrary detentions of government critics and journalists.' "These arbitrary detentions place Eritrea in contravention of international and regional human rights treaties which the government has only recently ratified. They also foster a climate of impunity on the part of authorities," Amnesty International said. Critics of the government and journalists from the private press have been held in secret incommunicado detention for one year now, since the authorities started a sudden clampdown on growing public dissent in September 2001.

The 74 military and national service personnel arrested in February 2002 remained imprisoned near Assab at year's end. Reports suggest that they were being detained until they repudiate their faith. In May 2002, the MOI ordered several Protestant churches to close, including the Rhema Church, Pentecostals, Full Gospel, and other small Protestant groups. The Government instructed these churches to register with the MOI to receive authorization to reopen. Despite the fact that several of the churches submitted registrations in 2002, none of the churches had been authorized to reopen by year's end. The four government-sanctioned religious groups were not required to register. On October 15, government officials evicted the Full Gospel Church from the compl ... All Christian houses of worship are ordered shut without official explanation Jeff Taylor ERITREA W ithout official explanation, the Eritrean government has ordered the closure of all Christian churches that are not Orthodox, Roman Catholic, or Lutheran. SIM (formerly Sudan Interior Mission), an evangelical Protestant organization active in Eritrea since the 1950s, received the announcement on May 21 via the U.S. Embassy in Eritrea. The news came as a surprise, since Eritrea's constitution mandates freedom of religion. The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) reported that the dominant Eritrean Orthodox Church could be pressuring the government to close independent evangelical and charismatic churches "in the wake of what appears to be a budding revival movement occurring within the traditional Orthodox Church, as well as a recent outbreak of evangelical fervor within the Protestant community." Many Eritrean soldiers became Christians because of personal evangelism and Christian radio broadcasts during the war for independence from Ethiopia from 1962 to 1991. The Eritrean Orthodox Church claims to have 1.7 million members in 1,500 churches. Eritrea formed a single diocese within the Ethiopian Orthodox Church until its independence in 1993.

Teaching Science and Technology to Children of Developing Nations Introduction Why Eritrea? The Project Project History Curriculum Examples Press Why Eritrea? After thirty years of war, Eritrea, a small country in northeast Africa, desire s sustainable peace for its people. Eritrea’s best resource are its citizens. However, the nation has a high illiteracy rate caused by an interruption of its educational system during the war, preventing the population from moving quickly into a technological society. A top priority of the government of Eritrea is the education of its people. Government policy makers believe by using current technology tools, Eritrean children can quickly scale the ladder of success. Eritrea does not have the resources to do this alone and is seeking assistance. Craig Johnson, chairman of a new formed group called NetAfrica, led a delegation to Eritrea in 1997 to meet with President Isaias Afwerki. From their discussions, came the seeds of a joint educational project. They discussed how the Internet can assist Eritrea as a training tool to provide teachers and its workforce with Internet access to the rest of the world. In 1998, the Math/Science Nucleus became the umbrella organization for NetAfrica with Teclu Tesfazghi, a Board Member, responsible for outlining a project with the government of Eritrea. In 2002, the Eritrea government selected Ali Suleman to become the national coordinator. Oscar Rosenbloom became the Project Coordinator for the Math/Science Nucleus.
