The color of culture
Throughout elementary school, kids called me "African booty-scratcher" and "Dirty African." Though I knew they were mean and spiteful terms, I never really knew what they meant.
I was in high school before anyone questioned my African identity and culture. Kids, having learned that my parents are from Eritrea, would ask dim-witted questions like, "Do Africans run around naked in the jungle?" or my personal favorite, "What language do Africans speak?"
How shallow to think an entire continent speaks one language
I never did like World History class, especially when we reached the slavery unit. I would sit in class, the lone black girl, my head lowered in discomfort as we watched "Roots." The screen was illuminated by scantily-clad Bushmen waving spears, chanting in some indecipherable tongue.
Distant whispers and giggles would come from the dark corners of the room. A kid once shot me with an invisible dart, "HA! Gotcha, Mary." I sank lower in my seat, eager for my 30 minutes of shame to be over.

Pounded Yams and Injera (continued)
My journeys to Eritrea began in 1994, when I interviewed young women (the age of my daughter, Winona) who had lived almost half of their lives as fighters in a war zone. This occurred during Eritrea's thirty-year war of liberation from Ethiopian control from 1961 to 1991. During the war, a culture unit was established, and several women also learned to paint between battles. Their story is told in the chapter "Eritrea: Artist-Fighters with New Visions" in Africa: Women's Art, Women's Lives. I returned to Eritrea in 1995, pleased to be invited by the Eritrean Ministry of Education and Culture, the Asmara School of Art, and the United States Information Service to present an art workshop. It was an extraordinary challenge, to help young people shift from images of war to peace and reconstruction and to explore their personal lives. I then also had time to sketch each day at the Asmara markets, and when I traveled with the artists to nearby towns and villages. Gradually my paintings began to reflect Eritrea's cultural diversity, as well as common survival themes related to village life and people's dependence on the land. fig. 60: Eritrea: Compassionate Madonna

AND THE CONSTITUTION

By John Ikubaje
Global experience has proven that the fight against corruption cannot be effective without the backing of relevant legal frameworks, says the author, who heads the Anti-Corruption Department at the Centre for Democracy and Development, in Lagos, Nigeria. But he goes on to argue that legal frameworks are not enough: strong political will and civil society participation are also required.

The Eritrea Guide in Summary
This page provides a summary overview of sustainable development and human rights issues in Eritrea for quick reference. Select the links for a full section of Guide material relevant to each heading.
Millennium Development Goals
The continuing crisis of food security in Eritrea undermines conventional development planning. In turn, the unceasing conflict with neighboring Ethiopia, natural disasters, and HIV/AIDS ensure that food security will remain a major threat to vulnerable post-war Eritrea during 2005. The country, which has a long history of droughts, failed to obtain enough timely rains during 2004 and must seek assistance from the world community to provide food to half of its population. More than 2 million people are at risk and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has already warned the world community of a possible draught calamity. The joint appeal of $157.2 million by relief agencies operating in Eritrea has received a poorer response from donors than expected, posing a grave threat to food security of this young nation.

Star Wars Vs. Real Wars
by John Rude
We all know what war is about, don’t we? We saw “Saving Private Ryan” and came away understanding war as experienced by our fathers. Or we viewed the latest episode of “Star Wars,” thankful that it all takes place in the future—or was it the past? But, unless we are veterans of a conflict involving U.S. intervention, we have to admit that for Americans, war is little more than a fantasy, enhanced by special effects.
I’ve never seen actual combat, but war has been a constant reality in my life for the past year. By a strange quirk of circumstances, some years earlier I had crossed a boundary and joined another culture. Last year, my adopted country stumbled into what has become the world’s largest forgotten war.
The miracles of technology have been bringing friends and combatants from afar to my home each day. Cluster bombs exploded on my computer screen only hours after they sliced through real bodies in villages that I had visited and taught in. Videotapes of real battles arrived weeks after they were fought. The images were so real, I almost got a whiff of cordite and rotting human flesh.

Qathafi address on Arab -African cultural relations
Libya Regional, Politics, 8/5/2005 Libya's Leader of the revolution, Muammar al-Qathafi, received the participants in the activities of the "Arab -African Cultural Relations, Future Vision" symposium "organized by General Union of Arab Writers, Literary men and Writers Association of Great Jamahiriya, in the presence of Azeddin al-Mihoubi, chairman of the Arab Writers Union, the Union's Secretary General, Ali Aqla Ersan, Secretary General of Pan African Writers Association, Prof Atukwei Okai, assistant secretary of the Literary men and Writers Association of Great Jamahiriya, Sa'ad Nafu, a throng of researchers, writers and literary men, as well as university lectures from both African and Arab countries," JANA reported yesterday.
Here follows is Qathafi's speech in this regard:
" In the name of God,
First of all, I welcome you in your country, the Jamahiriya, and I welcome you particularly in Sert, dubbed, the first bond, or first line of confrontation, because through out history, Sert was exposed to hostile attacks from overseas, aimed at the heart of Africa. However, all such onslaughts were always met with stiff resistance of the City of Sert, or the region of Sert. It is therefore, the first line of confrontation, not only for Libya but for Africa.
I hail this opportunity and initiative, for the cohesion of African and Arab writers from outside the continent. I wish success to such attempt, although, it is taking place in inappropriate environment, we will try to overcome this environment.
