Unique Programs To Special Places For Memories Of A Lifetime!
ERITRIA: 3 Seasons, 3 Millennia and 3 Km Vertical
The Eritrea 3 Seasons, 3 Millennia and 3km Vertical program derives its name for the diversity of the itinerary: Between the cool highland temperatures, the harvest season in the agricultural area and the perpetual summer conditions of the plains along the Red Sea, there are at least three seasons to enjoy. The recorded history of the area dates back to the Queen of Sheba and settlements of the Axumite Kingdom. The people of Eritrea we meet, including Tigrinya, Kunama, Nara, Bilen, Tigre and Hadareb, have long, rich and elegant tradition and culture. The great news is 3000 vertical meters is mostly a descent to the Red Sea (and you can take a bus or cycle back up!) Other parts of the trip are hilly as well so participants must be prepared to cycle up hill. Among the other joys of the trip are the fresh fruit juice in Asmara, the spectacular mountain scenery, the wonderful friendliness of the Eritrean people and a great cuisine. Schedule: October (see full schedule and status ) Because of low demand this program is only run every couple years. It is very helpful if you let us know that you are interested in this program.

ETHIOPIA / ERITREA BY BICYCLE
For those looking for the challenge and adventure of a lifetime and want to explore some of Africa's most rugged and spectacular countryside by bike, Bicycle Africa offers the world's only scheduled bicycle tour of Ethiopia and Eritrea full schedule ). (Because of low demand this program is only run every couple years. It is very helpful if you let us know that you are interested in this program.) Participants will be exhilarated by the rich cultural; 4000 years of history; thriving agricultural; and geographical and environmental diversity of the country. Ethiopia and Eritrea are mélanges of industrious cities and vast rural populations that reflect traditional culture and values. Program participants will have opportunities to meet rural villagers, craftsmen, educators and officials; to learn about the day-to-day life and the changing role of women; to shop in local markets; to wander in archeological sites of empires and kingdoms dating back many centuries and to enjoy the extraordinary friendliness of the people and inspirational beauty of the Abysinnian highlands. This awe-inspiring corner of Africa is virtually undiscovered by Westerners.
HORN OF AFRICA: IMPERIAL HIGHLANDS
There is a relationship between Ethiopia/Eritrea’s dramatic topography and its historic ability to thwart outside conquest. The one element that succeeded in crossing the mountains and canyon was religion. Ethiopia/Eritrea’s story includes chapters on Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as numerous indigenous religions. Many Ethiopians/Eritreans pride themselves on not being “African” or “Arab”. They are uniquely Ethiopian and Eritrean. Attesting to its uniqueness is distinctive and delicious cuisine, elegant clothing styles and ceremonies and pageantry all its own.

A Review of “I Didn’t Do it For You: How the World Betrayed a Small African Nation” From Conrad to Wrong, it’s all wrong
Fine fellows— cannibals—in their place . They were men one could work with, and I am grateful to them. And, after all, they didn’t eat each other before my face : they had brought along a provision of hippo-meat which went rotten, and made the mystery of the wilderness stink in my nostrils. Phoo! I can sniff it now. … We are accustomed to look upon the shackled form of a conquered monster, but there—there you could look at a thing monstrous and free. It was unearthly and the men were—No they were not inhuman. Well, you know that was the worst of it—this suspicion of their not being inhuman. It would come slowly to one. They howled and leaped and spun and made horrid faces, but what thrilled you was just the thought of their humanity —like yours—the thought of your remote kinship with this wild and passionate uproar. And between whiles I had to look after the savage who was fireman. He was an

ROP code: Location:
There are about 1.4 million Afar in the three countries: Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea. The 1998 Ethiopia census reports about 980,000 Afar. Population estimates for Djibouti range from 130,000 to 170,000. Eritrea figures are generally reported as 300,000. One source I know also reports almost 500,000 of these in Somali, but most sources have indicated they are not actually that far south. This was my conclusion when I investigated that question a few years ago. In Djibouti the Afars make up about 40% of the population. The previous name of the territory was the French Territory of Afars and Issas, the latter being the tribe of Somalis who are dominant there. Much of their territory is desert and salt flats, cut by great cracks from the sun's heat. Temperatures are reported to be the hottest on earth. History:
Little is known of the actual specific history of the Afar people. The Afar claim a descent from Arabs, through a mythic Yemeni ancestor, though they differ racially, linguistically and culturally. This kind of cultural geneological adoption is common among Semitic and Cushitic peoples, such as some Somali clans, who also claim Yemeni Arab descent. Sometimes this reflects cultural ties from an earlier historical period or actual instances of intermarriage, perhaps for a defense alliance.

Relief Aid, the Other Face of Neocolonialism -III-
By Staff
Jul 27, 2005, 17:16
The NGOs, which work in the relief aid in Africa, have become one of the prominent detestable features in the eyes of Africans. We can say no village in Africa is exempt from activities of the relief agencies coming from the west. One may ask about the projects which are carrying shining names. The answer is simple and the truth is that the NGOs are adopting and implementing imaginary or unfeasible schemes. Furthermore they are expending huge budgets in the purchase of costly cars and vehicles roaming African villages and towns. Some researchers concerned with the development and welfare of Africa called the humanitarian organizations coming from Europe and America, the vanguard of neocolonialism. This urges us to say that most of the ex-colonialist states have established ministries and institutions dealing with the issues of overseas development. They are allocating big budgets directed for assistance and relief aid donations etc. The question is what is the objective behind this? The book Masters of Poverty indicated that the humanitarian activities undertaken by western states are not initiating from humanitarian motivations, but rather they are aiming at plundering the wealth and resources and also for the obstruction of the development of poor nations, propagation of corruption and the inculcation of the culture of dependence. Some simple-minded people see the benefit of exploiting the assistance and relief aid for local needs without recognizing the long-term objectives. But the donor institutions and agencies work according to strict measures and rules prohibiting the recipient states from making any modifications on the prior set plans.

African imperialism: Ethiopia and Eritrea From: The Atlas of African Affairs
Ieuan Ll. Griffits Ethiopia came to be regarded by the European powers towards the end of the last century as their equal in imperialism. Ethiopian imperialism has outlasted direct European imperialism in Africa and, despite dramatic changes in domestic political ideology, Ethiopia is still a loosely knit empire which has not yet succumbed to the forces of disintegration that have devasted much grander empires elsewhere. The main victim of Ethiopian imperialism is Eritrea but other parts of the country, including Tigray in the north and the Ogaden in the east, have recently fought militarily for greater autonomy if not downright secession. For thirty years Eritrea fought for its independence from Ethiopia. Eritreans view the long-lasting conflict as a fight for the basic human right of self-determination, denied to them in the past by the UN. Eritrea was seen as a separate political entity which was forced into federation and then union with Ethiopia. Ethiopia has regarded the conflict as a secessionist war waged by a rebellious region which, if successful, would have left Ethiopia landlocked and in danger of further disintegration. The two positions were irreconcilable but, on the fall of the Mengistu regime in Addis Ababa in 1991, Ethiopia ended the war against Eritrea.

Dr Bereket's sceptical answer to the former will come as no surprise to those familiar with his views. He is clearly disheartened that the government has yet to implement the Constitution that was ratified in May 1997, a constitution that was the result of three laborious years of consultation by a commission that the government itself had asked Dr Bereket to chair between 1994 and 1997. It is also clear that he is puzzled by the fact that the government would have established an electoral committee which 'disappeared' after only two meetings. What happened between 1997 and 1998? He asked. And what has happened since 2000? The lively discussion ended with a member of the audience asking Dr Bereket if he would today accept to chair the Constitutional Commission, and what if any changes he would make to the current draft. Dr Bereket concluded by saying that, with hindsight, he would most likely turn down any similar request and that while satisfied with the constitution as it stood, he would nonetheless amend the chapter on language.
