Getting in and out was a bad experience. The Murtala Muhammad Airport's customs people asked for bribes, and some in an aggressive way. The amount requested seemed to increase by the number of stars on the uniform. I paid some of them off to avoid more hassle.
Then they discovered my laptop computer! Five of them jumped on me. " You must pay US$200.00! You can reclaim the money when you leave. " A lie. We later discovered that they had given me a receipt for VAT on the amount. Worthless. . . . Beware!
I had checked up on the country before leaving, so I knew that there were problems ahead. Still, my negotiating position was weak.

Information and Media in Eritrea
Internet facilities were introduced in Eritrea in 2000 and the capital Asmara is now full of Internet cafes with users queueing at all hours of the day and night. Similar services are being extended to other cities like Massawa, Mendafera, Karen, and Decamerah. An estimate shows that about 5000 people from all walks of life daily use the Internet. However, to respect cultural sanctity, the government has strictly prohibited browsing pornographic websites.
There are more than 50 computer centers in Asmara alone, offering various advanced computer courses. In increasing numbers of schools, computer training is available. The University in Asmara and the newly established Eritrea Institute of Technology in Mainefhi both offer advanced computer education and almost every ministry is training its personnel. Thus an IT culture is rapidly propagating, thereby connecting Eritrea with rest of world and diminishing the digital divide.

Project Summary This prospectus describes a book. project to document the efforts of artists working to help resolve conflict, promote peace, and rebuild civil society in communities in upheaval around the world. The activities of artists in global hot spots like Northern Ireland, Eritrea, Cambodia, and Bosnia are largely unknown, indeed surprising, even to those who regard themselves as knowledgeable about the arts and international affairs. Considered separately, their stories are compelling and inspiring. Taken together, they constitute an important and growing body of work from which we can learn much about how human creativity can help us heal the deepest and most destructive of our self-inflicted wounds. To date research has been conducted in Northern Ireland, Cuba, and Littleton, Colorado (Columbine High School). We are currently soliciting financial support for the documentation of the efforts of artists in Brazil, Eritrea, Yugoslavia, Cambodia, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, India, and Oakland, California. We are also interested in learning about other such programs around the world. Anyone with information relevant to this project can contact us Project Background These artists working in the forgotten corners of our society had found or forged new ways of making significant change. They were addressing and helping to solve some of our country's most pressing problems. Most of them had been doing it for years, and yet, nobody knew.

CULTURE Eritrea was under the rule of the Aksumite Empire beginning in the fourth century A.D. Christianity was introduced in the highland region of the country at around that time, and the Muslim faith was popularized in the lowlands about 300 years later, sparking conflicts between the two groups over religious differences. Eritrea was the target of a number of invasions by foreign powers as a result of its strategic coastal location along the Red Sea. Over the centuries, Eritrea fell to the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Italy, Ethiopia, and eventually came under British control before gaining independence in 1993.
