issue 238 - December 1992 Native stranger
Women fought side by side with men to liberate Eritrea. Now they are in a new struggle to make sure women’s rights remain a vital part of the Eritrean revolution. Elsa Gebreyesus went to do her part. The high-pitched ululation splits the quiet morning air at Asmara airport. As we cross the tarmac, the woman in front of me pauses to express her joy at returning home to Eritrea after who knows how many years of exile. For me, an Eritrean by heritage, it is the first time on my native soil. Tears trickle down my face and I join her ululations. I was not born in Eritrea, but instead grew up moving from country to country, eventually settling in Canada. But my primary identity was always Eritrean, even if I only saw my homeland in pictures or on maps. Most of the people I know back in North America have no idea what it feels like to learn another culture, language and way of life while trying to keep one’s own precious culture and customs alive. But now I have come to see with my own eyes the birth pangs of my people as together we take the first steps towards becoming an independent nation. Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is our largest city with some 350,000 people, but it has more the feel of a big neighbourhood. Those who live there behave like members of an extended family giving life a lightness and a warm sense of security. For me this contrasts sharply with the West where there is little empathy and strangers are ghosts or apparitions that happen to occupy the same time and space.

Tribes of Liberia
  • Background
Many consider the Gola to be earliest tribe to inhabit Liberia, but the Gola themselves claim they met the Dei ethnic group there when they arrived. The Dei ethnic group are a vanguard group of Bassa that settled Liberia in waves. The ethnic groups of Liberia can be divided into five major groups:
  • Mel (Gola, Kissi) Kwa (Dei, Bassa, Kru, Krahn, Grebo) Mande-Fu (Kpelle, Gio, Mano, Loma) Mande-Tan (Vai, Mende, Mandingo) Repatriated (Americo-Liberians, Congo, Caribbean)

The history of most of these ethnic groups spans over thousands of years.
The Dei would settle first and would later be joined by the Gola ethinc group before any of the other Bassa groups arrived. The Gola ethnic group originated somewhere in Central-Africa. During the Empire of Ancient Ghana they were heavily involved in the land-surveying and judicial aspects of the empire. The other ethnic groups that fall under the Mande-Tan, Mande-Fu were also members of Ancient Ghana. Because of the their influence in the judicial aspects of the Ghana, the Gola's social structure dominated through the Poro. With the influx of Islam many groups adopted while others resisted. The Golas fought three wars with pro-Islamic elements in a changing Ghana. These wars were known as the Kumba wars. The Golas lost the third of these wars and were forced to retreat toward, Sierra Leone. They were pursued by the Mende, Gbandi and Loma. Their battles with the Mende in Sierra Leone forced them to retreat yet again and settle finally in Liberia where they encountered the Dei.

(UN-HABITAT Feature) The simple, straight designs of rationalism can be seen in numerous buildings around the capital, ranging from small apartment blocks to multi-storey commercial developments. During the intervening years, it has changed very little except that preoccupation with war left no time for paying attention to the buildings, some of which are now sadly crumbling. But hopefully with the CARP initiative, the decline will be reversed before it is too late. Hurried and unplanned construction, which began after independence, was abruptly brought to a halt after the new authorities realized that this was not the way forward. CARP was born from that realization and a building embargo was placed on the historic perimeter.

Activity Three: Culture, Society and Production in East Africa INTRODUCTION
We have now looked at some of the history, international relations, and geography of East Africa in Activities One and Two. But what is daily life like for East Africans? What are some of their cultural practices, ways they organize themselves socially, and how do their economies work? These are some of the questions that we will get at in Activity Three. CULTURE IN EAST AFRICA
What is a culture? You may remember dealing with this question in Module 8: Culture and Society in Africa . The word culture can be used in many different ways. Sometimes people use it to only refer to expressive arts (music, dance, and visual arts). Sometimes people use it to generally describe the way of life of a group of people. The latter is the way that we will use the word culture in this activity. Just as cultures in America are very diverse, so are cultures in East Africa. East Africans have many different cultural traditions that they practice, even within the same country. For this reason, we have chosen two specific cultural traditions out of many that have developed in East Africa for you to learn about. MUSIC AND DANCE IN SEYCHELLES
Seychelles is a melting pot of various African, European, and Asian cultures. The islands were settled by Europeans who brought African slaves to work on their plantations during the 18th century. Later in the 19th century, Indian and Chinese traders arrived as well. Most people in Seychelles today are of mixed descent from these backgrounds.

of Eritrea
Background:
Eritrea is located in Eastern Africa in the Horn of Africa, to the North of Ethiopia and bordering the Red Sea in Northeast. It has a mixed Afro-Asiatic population that is divided by religion and language. Eritrea is one of Africa's newest independent nations. The former Italian and British colony gained formal independence from Ethiopia, its last colonizer, in 1993. But independence did not end the wars in Eritrea. Conflicts with Yemen and Ethiopia followed.
Latest UN reports (2005) warned that the humanitarian situation in Eritrea was deteriorating, mainly due to recurrent drought and the protracted stalemate in the peace process with Ethiopia.

Monday, 30 October, 2000, 18:16 GMT Eritrea confronts the future
Time to reflect in a war-scarred country
By Alex Last in Asmara Over the last few months Eritrea has been experiencing an unprecedented level of debate, introspection, and self-criticism. Ever since the last round of fighting, which saw large swathes of the country occupied by Ethiopia, discussion has been pouring through the media on what happened in the war, the state of the country and its future.
Questions are being asked over the government's conduct of the war
Debate via e-mail from the Eritrean diaspora has been one source of articles highly critical of President Isaias Afwerki, the practices of the government, the bureaucracy and the affairs of the ruling party, the Peoples Front for Democracy and Justice (FPDJ). The most common call is for transparency, accountability and for more popular participation in government. The most famous criticism appeared in an open letter to the Eritrean President called the "Berlin Declaration", signed by 13 Eritrean academics and professionals, including the former head of the Constitution Commission, Dr Bereket Habte Selassie and some senior veterans of the war of independence.
