Captain Thomson and Jenny Camp were toward the rear of the starting order and by the time of their start the pond had unhorsed dozens of riders. The word was filtering back not to jump to the right. With this insight Thomson and Jenny jumped to the left, stumbled slightly, but made it through with no faults. They completed the course without serious problems. All totaled, only fifteen of forty-eight horses negotiated the number four obstacle with no difficulty. Twenty-eight horses fell, and three refused to jump at all. The obstacle injured three horses so badly they had to be destroyed while dozens of others lost confidence or at a minimum lost time on the course due to the experience. One rider had to chase his horse for several miles before mounting and continuing on.

    Did You Know?
Just like people, horses need a valid passport to travel internationally.
In dressage (derived from the French verb "to train") a horse-and-rider team receives scores based on a series of set movements. The movements test the horse's strength, suppleness, and obedience and the rider's ability to guide the horse through the test with subtle cues. The horse-and-rider team should present harmony, lightness, and free-flowing movement. The competition is held in three rounds. The third round is a freestyle test set to music, first introduced in , that is scored both for technique and artistry.

Search Emmitsburg.net The Olympic Sport of Eventing Michael Hillman The Equestrian sport of combined training, or 'Eventing', traces its origin to the days when each country depended upon the cavalry in battle and horses were a vital part of the Army. Friendly boasting at the end of a day's campaign as to the relative courage, speed, and stamina of particular horses evolved into a series of tests to prove these claims. In track and field, the decathlon represents the ultimate in testing the all-around skill of an athlete. In equestrian sport, combined training is considered the ultimate test. This competition encompasses three separate tests (hence, its name): dressage, endurance, and show jumping, each scored individually but added together for the final score. Unlike other sports where only the human will and body are working against the clock, in combined training, two minds and bodies have to work as one, and a true partnership between horse and rider is necessary to win.

      Equestrian
Competitors in the Equestrian competition compete in three disciplines - Dressage, Show Jumping and Three-day Eventing. The Three-day Event is made up of the Dressage and Show Jump events plus a race over a Cross-Country course. Origins
Equestrian events originated as a military test of skill for both horse and rider, and as late as 1958 the Olympic competition was only open to military riders. Dressage was devised as a way of teaching horses specific manoeuvres suitable for the battlefield, while Cross Country racing improved stamina and agility. Olympic Heritage
Equestrian events first appeared on the Games programme in 1900, but were not seen again until the Stockholm Games of 1912. The 1900 Games in Paris included a long jump and a high jump for horses. Equestrian events hold a unique place in Olympic sport - as well as being the only events that involve animals, they are also the only events in which men and women compete against each other. Sport at Heart
Equestrian events in 2012 will take place in Greenwich Park - one of four World Heritage sites in London.

Hoy and Germany lose equestrian gold
Last Updated: Sunday, August 22, 2004. 0:51am (AEST) Germany has lost its two gold medals in the equestrian three-day eventing competition after the sport's highest appeal body upheld an appeal by France, Britain and the United States. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that Bettina Hoy, wife of Australian rider Andrew Hoy, should have suffered time penalties in Wednesday's show jumping final, costing her the individual gold and Germany the team title. France, which had finished in second in team competition, will now receive the team gold medal. Britain move up from bronze to silver and the United States go to bronze after initially finishing fourth. In the three-day individual competition, Britain's Leslie Law moves up to gold, American Kimberly Severson to silver and Briton Pippa Funnell to bronze. France, Britain and the United States wanted to have Germany stripped of their team and individual golds because they said a 14-point time penalty assessed by the show jumping grand jury should not have been revoked by the appeal committee.

    The Olympic Sport of Edgecrafting
I am not planning on watching much of the Athens Olympics televised by NBC. Why not? Well, NBC’s coverage of the major sports and Olympic events like Gymnastics, Swimming, Basketball, and the Opening/Closing ceremonies is too sanitized, too slick, too expected, and too commoditized (i.e. lowest common denominator) for me. However, I do plan to watch the “edgecraft” sports being televised on Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA cable channels. Televising uncommon but common sports like Badminton, Table Tennis, Field Hockey, Water Polo, and Archery is classic Seth Godin Edgecrafting SETH GODIN EDGECRAFTING REFRESHER COURSE
As detailed in Free Prize Inside , Edgecrafting is about going to the “edges” to find innovation. On the outer edges, one finds the out-of-the-ordinary which can be deemed extreme, offbeat, captivating, and downright remarkable. These remarkable goings-on may be far from being mainstream, but they are definitely worthy of talking about. And discovering talk value is where edgecrafting crafts Free Prizes.
