The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Hong Kong Gets Equestrian Equestrian events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be staged in Hong Kong. The switch of Olympic venue - the most radical since 1956 when Stockholm filled in for Melbourne, also for equestrian - was announced on Friday after lengthy negotiations between Games organisers and the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). The FEI had consistently opposed the Beijing organizing committee's plan to relocate the events to the former British colony, which was handed back to China in 1997, saying it would cause them to feel "separate" from the Games. Beijing officials had insisted that moving the events was necessary because of "uncertainties of equine diseases and major difficulties in establishing a disease-free zone".

's goose egg is broken. Until last night, Madden seemingly always a multiple winner in the Spruce Meadows circuit had been uncharacteristically shut out from victory. That changed last night in the North American's $50,000 Lafarge Cup. Riding Judgement, Madden edged out Nick Skelton and the rest of the six-rider jump-off to claim the $17,000 first prize, and finally a first-place ribbon. "A little frustrated. The derby (the Shell Cup at the National in which she placed second) I had a great ribbon and I'm just coming from a tour in Europe and Desilvio just came back from injury and did terrific there," she said. "Really, I have a good string of horses, they didn't all make it here for a couple of reasons, and the ones I have are perfectly capable of winning.

Powered by Ezine Director Equestrian Sports: Inhumane? By Laura Schwartzman I think I've been disowned - twice. As a horse owner and participant in riding, some view me as an animal rights hypocrite; yet my criticisms of the sport tend to annoy fellow equestrians. With the Summer Olympics taking place this year, I implore animal rights advocates to investigate the situation! Problem is, the equestrian world is so diverse that forming consistent opinions on horse treatment can be nearly impossible. I decided to write this article so I could help myself and others come to a realistic conclusion, and maybe even address some of the ethical issues in the horse industry.
    1. Ownership
I'm a good horse owner. I'm not afraid to boast, because good care shows. My Appaloosa mare, Candee, is provided with everything she needs: high quality food, lots of time in her pasture, proper hoof care, worming, and veterinary attention. My mother and I visit our horse often to groom and care for her. The problem is, many horses aren't so lucky; it isn't a question of how much money an owner has, rather, how the horse's natural instincts are addressed. Very fancy barns can fall short of keeping horses happy, just as a cheap barn can sometimes offer the best environment.

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and the International Paralympic Equestrian Sports (IPEC) have had a very successful meeting to discuss areas of cooperation. The FEI was represented by Assistant Secretary-General Michael Stone, while the IPEC delegation was led by Chairman Jonquil Solt.
The discussion centered on the training and education of coaches and officials. FEI and IPEC share similar goals and strategies in the education of riders, trainers, judges and other officials. IPEC itself has run about 50 courses in the last three years. During that time, it has more than doubled its strength to 34, the number of nations taking part in international equestrian competitions. Contacts with national equestrian federations around the world will help to maintain growth. Cooperation between FEI and IPEC is a good way of exchanging information and of combining resources.
