THE HISTORY OF EQUESTRIAN SPORTS IN NEW ZEALAND The Governing Body of Equestrian Sport in this Country is the New Zealand Equestrian Federation
Each discipline - horse trials (or eventing), show jumping and dressage - independently administers its own affairs, with representatives from each on the NZEF Council, and on the Federation Committee. Any person competing must be a member and horses must be registered for official competitions. The New Zealand Horse Society was founded in 1950, to administer what was then the new Federation Equestrian Internationale show jumping sport - hitherto in this country, jumping had been of the "round the ring " variety, and most of its adherents hunted in winter. Dressage and horse trials were unknown as such. Overseas in Europe, the heart of all three disciplines, the majority of the competitors were cavalry officers although there had been some prominent civilian show jumping riders in Britain in the 20's, 30's and 40'5 up until the second world war. By the late 1940's, and particularly after the Olympic Games in London, show jumping started to attract civilians, and the Duke of Beaufort made Badminton available for the British eventors to " and better their dismal 1948 Olympic performance. Dressage was still a European sport.

Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre
Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre (AFP) Situated in the east Attica region of Athens, the Markopoulo Equestrian Centre will host the Olympic equestrian events. The area was covered with olive groves and pastureland but is now lush and green. However it is taking so much water to maintain this greenery in the dry Greek climate that the olive groves which remain in the area are suffering from "wet feet". Covering an area of almost 1,000,000 square metres, the centre includes work areas, permanent and temporary stands, fields, stables for 300 horses, and internal road network and parking areas. It is configured so it holds 10,000 fans for the jumping, 8,100 for the dressage and 15,000 for the cross country. It is here that the Australian three-day eventing team will be hoping to etch their names indelibly in Australian Olympic history with their fourth consecutive gold medal in the event. Also situated in the east Attica region is the Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Centre.

The history and origins of track and field events. Track and field has beenthe centerpiece of the summer olympic games since their revival in 1896.

Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us was this how track and field started the origins and facts about running and track How it all began The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals. Other evidence, both literary and archaeological, suggests that the games may have existed at Olympia much earlier than this date, perhaps as early as the 10th or 9th century BC. A series of bronze tripods have been found at Olympia, some of which appear to be dated at about the 9th century BC, and it has also been suggested that these tripods may in fact be prizes for some of the early events at Olympia. The marathon was not an event of the ancient Olympic games. The marathon is a modern event that was first introduced in the Modern Olympic Games of 1896 in Athens, a race from Marathon - northeast of Athens - to the Olympic Stadium, a distance of 42.195 kilometers. The race commemorates the run of Pheidippides, an ancient "day-runner" who carried the news of the Persian landing at Marathon of 490 BC to Sparta (a distance of 149 miles) in order to enlist help for the battle. According to the fifth century BC ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides delivered the news to the Spartans the next day. The distance of the modern marathon was standardized as 26 miles 385 yards or 42,195 kilometers in 1908 when the Olympic Games were held in London. The distance was the exact measurement between Windsor Castle, the start of the race, and the finish line inside White City Stadium

Olympia: Aerial view of site and surroundings The Olympic Games in Antiquity reflected ancient Greek culture. Although they are of another era, they are an inspiration for the establishment of the modern Olympic Games, a fertile ground for discussion and comparison. The Games took place in Olympia in honor of Zeus. Their origin is shrouded in legend and their foundation is thought to have been 776 BC. The Olympics were the most glorious religious and athletic event of the ancient Greek world. Renowned and prestigious, they attracted a huge number of athletes and spectators. All free Greek citizens had the right to participate (excluding women). Victory at the Games was the highest honor for an athlete. Victors enjoyed special honors from their city; and often myths were created of their exploits. During the Games, a sacred truce was agreed: all interstate hostilities were suspended. The Games long history shows no shortage of stories of violated rules, broken truces, bribed athletes, political exploitation and hostile criticism. Gradually, the link between religion and the athletic ideal waned and the Games became a professional athletic spectacle. In 393 BC the Olympic Games were abolished permanently.

The Summer Paralympic Games are the ultimate competition for world class elite athletes with a disability and as such are linked to the Olympic Celebration each quadrennium. The Paralympic Games, in terms of complexity, duration and the number of competitors, are second only to the Olympic Games.
The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

HISTORY On January 20, 1917, representatives of 50 horse shows under the leadership of Reginald C. Vanderbilt met in New York City to draw together the horsemen and horsewomen of the North, South, East, and West in a unity of intention to maintain clean competition and fair play in the show ring. The first annual meeting of the Association of American Horse Shows was held on January 29, 1918. By then, 26 well known shows including: Brooklyn, Bryn Mawr, Devon, Tuxedo, and Wilmington were elected to membership. A certificate of incorporation was adopted in June. In 1919, records showed that the Association listed 35 member shows, with 16 Association Medals. By the annual meeting in January of 1924, the Association had extended its influence beyond the eastern border of the country, enrolling 67 shows.

The Soviet Union arrived in force for the first Olympics staged south of the equator, with the exception of the equestrian events which were held in Stockholm because of Australia's strict quarantine rules. Vladimir Kuts, a sailor from Ukraine, ground out remorseless victories in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, two of the 37 gold medals garnered by the Soviet Union who won 98 medals in all compared to the United States's 74. A Cold War battle was fought in the swimming pool, an extension of the bloodshed in Budapest when Soviet tanks crushed a brief Hungarian uprising. Blood was spilt during the water polo semi-final between Hungary and the Soviet Union as the players punched each other above the water and kicked out below. Hungary eventually won 4-0 and went on to take the gold medal. Australia flourished in the pool, winning eight golds, four silvers and two bronzes while 18-year-old Betty Cuthbert completed a 100-200 double on the track for the host nation. Reuters
