Sunday, October 1 Upset sees jump-off for medals Jenny MacArthur From Jenny MacArthur in Sydney Nobody could accuse the Olympic showjumping event of running to form. In a drama-filled final day at the windswept Horsley Park arena, Holland gained their first Olympic showjumping individual gold medal when Jeroen Dubbeldam, on Sjiem, a horse that had never even won a grand prix, relegated his countryman Albert Voorn, on Lando, to the silver medal after a three-horse jump-off. Khaled Al Eid, a former pupil of John Whitaker, brought Saudi Arabia their first ever Olympic equestrian medal when he and Khasm Al Aan, the horse on which he was runner-up to Whitaker in the British Grand Prix at Hickstead in July, took the bronze. In a startling end to the competition, world champion Rodrigo Pessoa, of Brazil, and the clear favourite, crashed out of the contest when his horse Baloubet du Rouet had three refusals at Fence 8a, an oxer. His exit prompted the jump-off among the three riders on four faults. The unexpected line-up of medal winners prompted an emotional press conference, with Dubbeldam, a 27-year-old riding instructor, and Voorn, 44, a former three-day-event rider, both in tears. Voorn spoke for both of them: “This is a dream come true. One very good rider said that neither of us were good enough to succeed here. Now we have both won medals.”

Monday, October 2 Wanted: riders with attitude Jenny MacArthur From Jenny MacArthur in Sydney While Britain basked in her best Olympic Games since 1924 - with many sports showing a prompt return for their lottery funding - the equestrian teams, with the notable exception of the silver medal-winning three-day-event team, all underperformed. The dressage team, which had hoped to reach the top five finished eighth (out of nine). The showjumpers, who had realistic expectations of a medal, also finished eighth. The individual showjumping contest on Sunday - in which Geoff Billington’s 24th place on It’s Otto was the best of the three British riders - concluded a dismal second week. "There are lessons to be learnt - we need to go home and analyse what went wrong here and put in place a strategy for Athens" John Tulloch, the outgoing President of the British Equestrian Federation, said. Jane Kidd, the chairman of the dressage selectors, who had thought that “the medal zone” would be within the dressage riders’ grasp after the structured training programme that lottery money has enabled them to introduce also spoke of the need for a “re-think”. No blame can be attached to the management and preparation of the horses. The extra funding had contributed to the “five-star” comfort which the horses had enjoyed on the flight and tip-top veterinary care throughout the build-up to the Games - with all the most up-to-date equipment. The training facilities at the Horsley Park equestrian centre were second to none. Mary King, who had been one of the favourites for a medal in the individual dressage competition but finished eighth, said that her horse, Star Appeal, felt ready to compete within a week of arriving.

Three day Equestrian Team Gold medallist, Andrew Hoy not only achieved a personal goal by winning his third consecutive gold medal, but he and his team mates, Stuart Tinney, Phillip Dutton and Matt Ryan gave the Foster's Sports Foundation their first Gold medal of the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games. On day two of the Olympics, 22 year old Annemarie Forder won a Bronze medal in the Women's 10m Air Pistol shooting competition to be the Foundation's first medallist. Today, however, it was cheers all round for the all conquering three day Equestrian Team specialists when they held on to defeat England and the USA. Two of the members Andrew Hoy and Phillip Dutton previously won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games whilst Hoy also won Gold in 1992 at Barcelona. Established in 1997 the Foster's Sports Foundation has provided $2.275 million toward recognising and promoting excellence in Olympic sport across Australia. The Foundation specifically targeted up and coming athletes with grants being given to a total of 338 individual recipients.

Power and glory of the Games Print article email story Paris - The Olympic Games, an international festival of sport which originated in ancient Greece, were revived in the 19th century by a French aristocrat worried by young Frenchmen not getting enough physical education at school. The ancient Olympics were mainly about the ruling classes preparing for war and barred women. Successive presidents of the International Olympic Committee, which Baron Pierre de Coubertin set up in 1894, were just as eager to keep the working classes and women in their place. He took as his model the British and American upper class educational system of enlightened paternalism. The Greeks had twice tried to revive the Games, in 1859 and 1870, so the first Olympic Games, since the Roman emperor Theodosius had banned them in AD 393, were held in Athens. 1896 Athens The nine sports on the Olympic programme were athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, lawn tennis, shooting, swimming, weightlifting and wrestling. A Greek architect Georgios Averoff picked up most of the bill and many of the competitors were simply tourists visiting Athens at the time.
