The ancient Greek city-states were rarely as united as they were at the Olympic Games.
By David C. Young
This article has been adapted from A Brief History of the Olympic Games,
Olympia was the site of the ancient Olympic Games, held every four years from about 776 B.C. until about 400 A.D. In those twelve centuries the political landscape inevitably underwent many changes, but Olympic events continued to attract athletes and spectators from Greek city-states and colonies throughout the Mediterranean.
Map: Patricia J. Wynne B.C. , maybe 300 men from the Greek city-states and colonies competed in about fourteen events. In antiquity, perhaps as many as 40,000 spectators could watch the games. Today, because of modern electronic communication, the whole world watches. For the poet Pindar of Thebes, whose victory odes immortalized the greatest contenders of the Hellenic world between 498 and 446 B.C. , the athletic contest served as a microcosm of the human struggle to surpass ordinary achievements. In athletic games the victor wins the glory his heart desires

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Equestrian A guide to the Olympic sport of Equestrian events Competition details There are three Olympic Equestrian events: eventing, dressage and show jumping. At Olympic Games, the horses must be the same nationality as the riders and each horse must be at least seven years old and have (as well as the rider) a certificate indicating experience in top international competition. Three-day event eventing consists of three elements: dressage, endurance and show jumping. The endurance section has four phases: 5km of road and track, 2.76km steeplechase, 7.7km of road and track, 6.27km cross-country section. After the road and track section there is a compulsory 10-minute veterinary inspection before competitors continue with the cross-country. Each section takes place on a different day, with two days for the dressage. Final results are determined by adding the penalty points together, with the lowest penalty points scored over the three disciplines deciding the winner. For the team event, the winner is determined by adding together the penalty points of the top three riders in each team and the team with the least penalties wins.

Military Athletes Have Proud Olympic History
By Samantha L. Quigley
American Force Press Service WASHINGTON, Aug. 13, 2004 As 21 servicemembers report to Athens to participate in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, they carry on a proud tradition. While few records of the Army's participation in Olympic games exist from before 1948, there is a record of a 2nd Lt. George S. Patton participating in the modern pentathlon in the 1912 games. He placed fifth. Since 1948, more than 400 servicemembers have participated in summer and winter Olympic games. The Army can claim 102 total medals for its efforts. Since the Air Force's inception in 1947, that service's athletes have won 24 Olympic medals, according to Steve Brown, chief of Air Force Sports. The Navy boasts at least 30 medals in the Games from 1948. Marines have participated in at least 15 Olympics and have won 14 medals since 1948. The earliest records place the first Olympic games at Olympia, in Western Pelloponnese, in 776 B.C. It is believed, however, Olympic games had been held for several centuries before that.

German Equestrian Team
With 68 Olympic medals and over 100 World and European titles, the German Equestrian Team will be the one to beat.
The German countryside is a breeding ground for one of the most formidable teams in the history of the Olympic Games. The event is Equestrian: jumping, cross-country, and dressage (a ballet of horse and rider). And the topic is the amazing fact that this team has won more medals in Olympic history than many countries have, in all events, in all Olympic Games combined. So we asked Dr. Astrid von Velsen-Zerweck, team spokesperson for the German Equestrian Team, what's the key to the team's success? First of all there is the German-bred horse. Strict breeding programs in Germany have historically guaranteed that only the best types from different lines are crossed. German horses are better? Well, you could say that. They're found on many country's teams. In the Olympic Games in Atlanta, 17 medals went to German-bred horses. It's a small wonder that horses "made in Germany" are desirable all over the world.

From the start, the Chief Constable obtained approval for a horse to be provided for each superintendent, as well as for a horse to be kept at principal stations. In 1880, the horse was the main means of transport and the then Chief Constable Henry Martin Moorsom often pointed out the need to use horses for police work.

History
MUNICH 1972
September 5, 1972, was the blackest day in Olympic history. Six Palestinians broke through the perfunctory security in the village, joined two others already there and made their way to the Israeli headquarters. Two Israelis were killed and nine taken hostage. In a subsequent battle, all nine hostages were killed, plus five of the Palestinians and a policeman. In a controversial decision IOC president Avery Brundage decided the Games would go ahead, although every event was inevitably overshadowed by the hostage tragedy. Mark Spitz surpassed Schollander with seven gold medals in the pool and the tiny Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut captivated millions of televison viewers with her performances in the separate apparatus competitions. Finn Lasse Viren revived memories of his remarkable predecessors with gold medals in the 5,000 and the 10,000 metres and the versatile Kenyan Kip Keino, winner of the 1,500m four years earlier, won the steeplechase. The Events
"Show jumping" is the most well-known equestrian event. Each horse and rider jumps two rounds of a series of obstacles. Fault points are assessed if an obstacle is knocked down, if the horse balks at an obstacle, or if the time is exceeded. The "dressage" competition requires the rider, man or woman, to guide the horse through a series of precise and intricate movements. Some of these movements include a stunning element called "the passage," which calls for a suspension of motion between each step of a trot, and another, "the piaffe," in which the animal trots in place. Points are awarded for the proper execution of each movement.

Horse Fan Pens Book on Care, History
Jane Slaughter loves horses. She loves them so much that she dedicated her book, "The Woman Equestrian," to her own horse, Sailor. Slaughter's book has tips for horseback riding and animal care. It also includes a history of women who have ridden horses. Karen O'Connor , equestrian Olympic medalist, wrote the foreword to the book. Slaughter hopes to publish another book tentatively titled "A Guide for the Child Equestrian and Some Helpful Hints for Parents." She said it would be child-friendly with easy directions and pictures. She hopes to augment the portion dealing with women and horses throughout history. "They refused to surrender their love for horses and their love for riding, and as a result, women are free to ride and free to participate and free to compete on a fair playing field with men," she said.
