http://www.georgiahorsepark.com/about/history.aspx
It's easy to see why horse lovers, golfers, mountain bike enthusiasts and festival attendees have such great things to say about their experiences at the Georgia International Horse Park.
The Horse Park History During the late 1980's, the City of Conyers, Georgia, which owned and operated the water and wastewater system for both Conyers and Rockdale County, began researching alternative methods of wastewater disposal. Like many communities, Conyers was facing increasingly stringent federal and state guidelines regarding wastewater discharges into rivers. One solution is a process called land application, which involves spraying treated wastewater on such green areas as grass and trees. The wastewater is not treated to the levels required for discharge into streams, but it still is sanitary for use on athletic fields and golf courses. City officials found that in order to expand the City's wastewater treatment capabilities, it would be better to use the land application process; and in 1990, the City identified a 1,139 acre tract of land located in a less-developed portion of Rockdale County as a site suitable for land application. Working with its engineers, the City decided that the site would meet the land application needs.
Community Needs
The 1996 Centennial Olympics September 18, 1990, was a momentous day in the history of Atlanta. It was the day the City of Atlanta was awarded the bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympiad. But this news had a significant effect on the City of Conyers' hopes of developing an equestrian complex. The plan for the 1996 Summer Games included developing facilities to host the equestrian events at a site only 30 minutes from Conyers. City officials knew that if the events were held at a site located close to Conyers, it would make Conyers' plan impractical. So, City officials decided the only way to make the City's plan for the equestrian complex a reality was by hosting the 1996 Olympic Equestrian Events. This plan began to come alive when local leaders learned that the site originally slated to host the equestrian events would not be hosting them after all. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) would be looking for another site.

Women in the Olympics - a brief history
The 20th May 2000 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. It also marks the centenary of women’s participation in the modern Olympics. Three events were available for women at the 1900 Olympic Games: golf, tennis and yachting. When the modern Olympic Games began in 1896 women had no part in the competition. In fact, the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said on several occasions that the Olympics were no place for women. He felt that rather than seek records for herself, a woman’s greatest achievement was to encourage her sons to excel. Women had to work to gain a presence in the Olympic arena and force open the door to one sport after another. Swimming for women was included in the Games in 1912 and a limited program of track and field was added in 1928. Women’s races longer than 200m were banned until 1960 when the 800m was reintroduced. The women’s marathon was not added until 1984. In 1992 the 10,000m walk was introduced and recently, waterpolo — which had been the domain of men since the Olympics first began — was added to the 2000 Olympic Games program for women. Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history.

HORSE SHOW
-Dec/Jan *COUNTDOWN TO SYDNEY
In 1956 when, for the first time, the Olympic Games were held south of the equator, in Melbourne, the Australian government were unwilling to shorten the usual six-month quarantine period for horses entering the country, so the equestrian disciplines were forced to take place in June in the Swedish capital, Stockholm. Forty-four years later, for the games of the new millennium in Sydney, the horses will be amongst the 10,200 athletes taking part in what will be the grandest sporting event in history. Horses, as well as all other athletes, will travel to Australia at the expense of the Sydney Organizing Committee Olympic Games (SOCOG) which will meet the cost of air transport for all Olympic participants and officials. Quarantine still exists in Australia and all horses coming from abroad will be subjected to it, however the period has been sensibly reduced since the days of Melbourne and it now looks as quarantine will not represent a big problem. During the CCI** which took place at the Olympic venue last September, representatives of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) met with the many delegations from national federations which attended the test event. This was a very constructive meeting where many aspects concerning quarantine were discussed. Former World Champion, Bruce Davidson who had two rides at the test event was not unduly worried about the process. "My horses had to go through quarantine in order to compete in the test event and although I had to spend quite a long time over there, the quarantine itself ran very smoothly. I can't remember one single problem occurring during that period."

After a remarkable year, David O'Connor, 41, of The Plains, VA, has been named as USA Equestrian's 2002 Equestrian of the Year. O'Connor is the first two-time winner of this award in the history of the sport. A stellar horseman, O'Connor was chosen from a group of eight of the country's most outstanding athletes that were already bestowed the title of Equestrians of Honor. The eventer first won the award in 2000 largely for his individual gold medal winning performance at the Sydney Olympics, where he rode Custom Made, an Irish Thoroughbred gelding owned by Joe Zada. While at the games, O'Connor turned in the best eventing dressage score in Olympic history when he opened the individual competition with a score of 29.00 penalties. He was the first U.S. athlete to take the gold medal in the sport since 1984.

September 1, 2004 The United States won more equestrian medals than any other team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with a total of 5 medals from six possible opportunities. For the second time in U.S. Olympic Equestrian history, and the first time in an Olympic games outside of the United States, the U.S. Equestrian Team won team medals in each discipline, Eventing, Dressage and Show Jumping. This was achieved only once before in the 1996 Atlanta Games. 2004 was also the third time the U.S. has won 5 Olympic medals, the previous being at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and the 1932 Los Angeles Games. The five medals won in Athens are the first time the U.S. has achieved this outside of our country, in fact, outside of Los Angeles. The only medal opportunity missed was in Individual Dressage, and Debbie McDonald came in fourth giving up an individual bronze medal by just 1.014 point.

History of Eventing DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY THE THREE PHASES OF EVENTING
The three phases of Eventing are: dressage, cross country, and stadium jumping.
The Stadium Jumping phase is generally the third and final phase of competition. Horse and rider must jump a course of colored rails and obstacles in an arena. Obedience, jumping ability and harmony between horse and rider are necessary for this phase. LEVELS OF COMPETITION
There are five levels of competition in an Event: novice, training, preliminary, intermediate, and advanced. Each level is designed to prepare horse and rider for the next, though there is no requirement to advance any higher than is comfortable for horse or rider. In each phase of the competition, horse and rider are scored according to penalties received. At the end of all three phases, the total penalties are added together and the winner at each level is the competitor with the lowest penalty score.

The Athens 2004 Olympics will start the eventing competition two days after the opening ceremony (August 13 2004), i.e., from August 15th to 18th, 2004. The schedule of events can be seen here The Olympic Equestrian Centre is located in Markopoulo , in eastern Attica, a facility that includes air-conditioned stables for 300 horses. There will be 20,000 seats for the jumping event , 8,000 seats for the dressage of the horses, and 40,000 seats for the cross-country event. Following suggestions made by the IOC in 2002 that eventing could be dropped from the Olympics after Athens (for reasons including that it was an expensive event to run, had a significant risk of injury and had a limited number of countries participate), the FEI not only suggested to the IOC that the Bejing 2008 Olympics could run a shortened CIC-style competition but that this could be introduced for Athens. Thus eventing at the Athens Games has changed from previous years to the "shortened" format. This excludes the steeplechase and roads and tracks element of the competition. Competitors will undertake three phases - dressage, cross country and show jumping.

SHAWNEE MISSION, Kansas, April 2001- David and Karen O'Connor, two of the nation's most celebrated equestrians, have signed an agreement with Bayer Corporation to join the Legend (hyaluronate sodium) Injectable Solution team of spokesmen and women. Beginning this year, they will add their personal endorsement of Legend, the only sodium hyaluronate approved for intravenous administration to treat equine joint disease. "We're extremely delighted to welcome the O'Connors to our team," said Dr. Alfred Amend, Bayer vice president, Marketing and Sales. "One of the primary reasons they agreed to speak for Legend is because they use the product and believe in it. And with their track records, that says a great deal to other equestrians." David O'Connor's track record is the stuff of which legends are made. He not only won the first Olympic Gold Medal for the United States Equestrian Team (USET) since 1984 at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, he turned in the best score in Olympic eventing history on Custom Made, a 15-year-old Irish Thoroughbred gelding. David also made history by sharing an Olympic Medal (Team Bronze) with his wife and teammate Karen for the second time. They shared the eventing team Silver at the 1996 Olympic Games.
