An Overview
The Ancient Olympic Games
The Ancient Olympic Games were held in the Valley of Olympia in Greece beginning in 776 B.C. These ancient games were held every four years for almost 1200 years.
The Modern Olympic Games
Inspired by the Ancient Games, the Modern Olympic Games were first held in 1896. There were 245 athletes (all men) competing in 43 events. These Modern Olympic Games were inspired by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and did not include any equestrian sports. Equestrian Events were not added as a full status sport until 1912. In 1912, 27 starters from 7 nations competed in each of three Equestrian Events, Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping, over a 5-day period of time. For the first half-century of Olympic Competition equestrian sports were solely represented by the military.
The Dressage Event
The art of Dressage is often compared to the ballet. A rider must execute precise maneuvers with a high degree of accuracy on a very fit horse. The judges evaluate not only the horse's performance, but the rider's ability to communicate with his or her mount. The more skillful the rider the less obvious his instructions to the horse will be.
The Three Day Event
This portion of the Olympic Competition is the most challenging, and traditionally has been the United States strongest event. It is designed to be a grueling test of both the horse and rider. The Three Day Event is patterned to highlight the qualities of a premium military mount, the horse must be responsive, obedient, bold, and athletic, with enormous physical and mental stamina. As its name indicates, this event consists of three phases, they are Dressage, Cross-country and Obstacle course, and Stadium Jumping.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

History
Since prehistoric times, people have been riding horses. Two Equestrian events, chariot races and horse races, were first included in the 25th ancient Olympic Games competition schedule, in 680 BC. By the 19th century, the three Olympic disciplines evolved to their current form. Equestrian events developed primarily from training horses for war. Many reports point to the fact that ancient Greeks used exercises similar to the modern Dressage events, in order to train their horses to move accurately and precisely in the battlefields. In modern history, the development of Dressage and Eventing disciplines was led by the cavalry’s need to use horses that could travel long distances in adverse circumstances and also be used in cavalry parades. Since cars and mechanically driven tanks replaced horses in battlefields, Equestrian events underwent rapid developments. The present form of Jumping evolved from foxhunting, which was conducted in Great Britain and other European countries. During foxhunting, riders had to jump over branches and other natural obstacles.

According to Olympic legend, Ron Clarke almost gave his right arm for the honour of carrying the Melbourne Olympic torch on its opening ceremony lap and lighting the Olympic cauldron. Fragments of magnesium spitting from the flame singed his arm and burnt holes in his white T-shirt. The combination of that and what Clarke insists were the over-zealous ministrations of a first-aid attendant in bandaging his arm from wrist to elbow led to the conclusion that he had suffered far more serious burns than he let on. The fact is, says Clarke, he would have given his right arm to run in the 1956 Games. An ill-timed three-month stint of national service duties deprived the then world junior record-holder for the mile from making a stronger bid to make the team as an athlete. (Clarke went on to run in two Olympic Games when he revived his career as a senior athlete.) "It was a great honour to be selected as the final torchbearer," says Clarke, now Mayor of the Gold Coast. "It was very exciting, but I would have given my right arm to be there as a competitor."

The Equestrian disciplines are unique among Olympic sports, in the sense that men and women compete on the same terms and horse and rider are both declared Olympic medal winners. The last WEG was held in Jerez (Spain), in September 2002. The next WEG is scheduled to take place in Aachen (Germany), in 2006. Only three of these disciplines were included in the Olympic Games competition schedule, and they included both individual and team events. The Olympic disciplines are:
