Recent Trends Politics: There is a dispute in the country between the ruling party (PDGE) and the opposition parties over the parliamentary election that took place in March 1999. Although the PDGE won the election, the opposition parties asking for cancellation of the election because of doubts about the transparency of the election procedure. Economy: Since the discovery of an oil field, crude oil was added to the former main exporting items, such as timber, cacao, and coffee.
