Ambassador Niels Marquardt: U.S. Independence Day Remarks
Malabo, Equatorial Guinea
July 8, 2005
Pictures of the Celebration
Your Excellency President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, Excellencies, Ministers, Members of Government, Excellencies, Ambassadors and members of the Diplomatic Corps, Representatives of International Organizations, Distinguished Guests, Fellow Americans, Ladies and Gentlemen: On behalf of myself and the entire American embassy staff here in Malabo and on mission with me from Yaoundé, welcome to our celebration of the 229th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which took place on July 4, 1776. We are pleased to have organized this celebration here at the newly-reopened Embassy in Malabo Residence. We continue to work hard to re-establish an official American presence in Equatorial Guinea that is equal to our important interests here. You have my promise: there is no higher priority for us, and we will continue the step-by-step process of adding staff and increasing functions. We realize fully that the processing of visas is perhaps the most important function that we do not yet offer. Over the coming year, I hope to have good news for you on that important issue. While our presence here is small, there should be no doubt about our interest in this important country. With our terrific staff here in Malabo and with frequent missions from Yaoundé, we are engaged in Equatorial Guinea on issues across the spectrum of our relationship. We value our relations with Equatorial Guinea and are pleased that they are excellent and indeed, growing closer.

Equatorial Guinea
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Republic of Equatorial Guinea is a nation in central Africa , and one the smallest countries in continental Africa . It borders Cameroon on the north, Gabon on the south and east, and the Gulf of Guinea on the west, where the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe lie to its southwest. Formerly the Spanish colony of Spanish Guinea , the country's territory (continentally known as Río Muni ) includes a number of islands, including the sizable island of Bioko where the capital, Malabo (formerly Santa Isabel ), is located. Its post-independence name is suggestive of its being situated near both the equator and the Gulf of Guinea. República de Guinea Ecuatorial

African tribal religions in Rio Muni Sources : Third World Guide 1984 1985, Africa Guide 1984. THESE days, the airport at Malabo in Equatorial Guinea is filled with the comings and goings of United Nations experts, Spanish and French aid officials, nuns, missionaries and returning Equatorial Guineans. Life in this small West African country is slowly reviving after the reign of terror of President Macias Ngueme who was overthrown and executed in 1979. Geographically split between the mainland enclave of Rio Muni and the island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea became independent from Spain in 1968. The population was wholly inexperienced in self-government and over 11 years a fairly prosperous country was transformed into one of extreme poverty. President Macias not only paralysed the political opposition but also the schools, health care and plantation production so that the country ground to a halt.
