ECUADOR Evangelicals called to solve crisis
QUITO, March l7 (ALC) The Ecuadorian Evangelical Confraternity called on
the Church and society to "persevere in a constructive spirit and to seek
solutions" in the face of the serious economic and political crisis racking
Ecuador. We want "to be the voice of the poor and needy, who we serve, who we form
part of and who cannot withstand more suffering. Unfortunately, many of
those who have access to public spaces talk about the poor in abstract
terms. We speak of the poor with an Ecuadorian face," said a document
published by the entity that brings together the majority of Evangelical
Churches in this South American country. "We believe that this is the time for compassion and to build horizons of
hope. We affirm that today is the time for justice, solidarity and low," said Evangelical Churches as a series of strikes and protests have been launched against President Jamil Mahuad's economic measures. The severity of the situation motivated the US State Department to warn political parties that they must seek a solution to the economic crisis "within the Constitution."

HOSPITAL DE LOS VALLES, QUITO, ECUADOR
A major new hospital is under construction in the Ecuadorian Capital, Quito. It is being constructed by the major Ecuadorian developer ProInmobiliaria, which has teamed up with Universidad San Francisco de Quito and the international operator from Colombia Administradora Country Clinic. The Universidad will supply the doctors and the personnel who will provide the services and the Administradora clinic will provide the model for the administration of the new hospital. Construction of the $25 million Hospital de los Valles began in mid 2003 and completion is scheduled for the end of 2004. When built, the new Hospital will provide services for more than 25,000 homes located in the Tumbaco Valley, the Chillos and important housing sectors to the east of Quito. This population of 100,000 inhabitants is growing rapidly. The particular site of the hospital was governed by a number of factors including the proximity of airports and transport facilities. The developers are currently financing the project through the sale of stocks, and welcome foreign investment. This project is part of a global plan that includes the construction of other hospital facilities such as the Clinica de la Costa in Guayaquil and the Country Clinic of Bogota.

Dear friends of the MST, The nation of Brazil is living through a serious crisis and is in grave danger. The danger that threatens our nation is the result of the implementation of neoliberal policies that favor only national and international finance capital and the huge corporations that are dedicated to exports. This policy worsens poverty, social inequality, and misery. read more

IEEP INSTITUTES MONETARY REFORM IN ECUADOR
"The role of Dora de Ampuero and the IEEP has been transcendental in this most important change of Ecuador. Praise must be given to this untiring fighter for liberty." José Luis Cordeiro, president, Venezuelan Exporters Association There is no demonstrable, scientific way to trace how ideas get implemented into public policy. Yet, one thing is certain: policy changes do not occur magically and automatically. They typically result from the relentless efforts of many dedicated individuals. The story of Dora de Ampuero, president of the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Economía Política (IEEP), provides an illustrative example of how a persistent devotion to ideas can lead to effective public policy reform. Who would believe that the Ecuadorian government's recent move to dollarize the economy has its roots in a humble, free-market institute located in the port city of Guayaquil? Yet, beyond doubt, the IEEP has played, and continues to play, a key role in bringing effective ideas for monetary reform to this Latin American country. Dora first came to Atlas in 1989 while pursuing graduate studies at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. As a student, she attended a seminar at

(Ms. Burnstad is president of the Cloud Forest Institute. She has recently returned from Ecuador, where she spent several months studying local agricultural organization and techniques while promoting cultural and economic sustainability. Her report begins with on-site observations this past March, and continues with reflections upon her return.) I should have thought ahead and realized that I would be the one learning the most in this experience, rather then my students. For some reason I wasn't as prepared as I thought for the intense realizations I've been having. The past three weeks have been challenging to say the least, in both professional and personal aspects. During our two weeks in Mindo I went from enchanted and ecstatic to frustrated and confused - and back and forth. I made some perspective shattering realizations; first, that you cannot invest trust even in old friends, second (I knew this one already) all of your preplanning doesn't insure that others will follow through in theirs, and hardest of all was to realize that good intentions do not always produce good outcomes. It hurts me to see the change and to watch the community struggle with it. It is even worse to realize I am at fault and I'm working to brings more influence to the community. I have had to really consider my intentions and more than that the possible outcomes of continuing to work within the community. The following is an excerpt from my journal.

Admiral United States Navy Born February 4, 1874 in Austin, Texas, the son of a career Army officer. He graduted from the US Naval Academy in 1894 and was appointed an Ensign, July 1, 1896. He served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection as well in operations in both Mexico and Nicaragua, receiving the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for the latter. He was the author of "Unofficial Navy Code," in 1909. For his World War I service he received the Navy Victory Medal with Star. Served as Superintendent of the Naval Academy from June 18, 1934 until his retirement in March 1, 1938. In 1937, the right to a Bachelors' Degree was extended backward to Naval Academy graduates before 1931. Only the Superintendent could sign the diploma, therefore Sellers, already a graduate of St. John's College, and the University of Souther California, as well as the Naval Academy, had the odd distinction of signing his own sheepskin. Following his death, he was buried in Section 26 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Anita Clay Evans Sellers, born at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and died on August 2, 1943 at Washington, D.C., is buried with him.

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS The Remarkable Iguanas The iguana - the dragon of the Galapagos, arrived on the Galapagos several million years ago from South America on floating vegetation. One group of iguanas took to the hills and the other to the sea. These marine iguanas are unique in being the only sea-going iguanas in the world. The Galapagos archipelago of thirteen main islands was formed by volcanic activity within the last five million years. The youngest island Fernandina is no more than 700,000 years old. The land iguana of the Galapagos Marine iguana and friend. The lava lizard uses the marine iguana's head as a lookout post! Lying at the conjunction of a complex system of warm and cold oceanic currents, it is the coolest place at sea level on the equator and home to a truly astounding variety of tropical and temperate animals, many of whom are not found anywhere else in the world. Fernandina Island is one of the most pristine locations on the earth being perhaps the largest island outside the polar regions with no introduced species. Dominating the island of Fernandina is a 1,500 meter volcano with a massive caldera six kilometers across. Despite the harshness of the terrain and the unpredictability of the environment being marked by frequent volcanic eruptions it is home to a vigorous array of wild life. Penguins and red-footed boobies, fur seals and tropic birds share its shores while the land is dominated by the reptiles - the land and marine iguanas as well as a giant tortoise. Hawks soar on the up-draught and doves and Darwin's finches drink the condensing water droplets from hissing fumaroles. But the most spectacular of all are the land iguanas who appear to have struck an evolution pack with the volcano itself.

My life would be more meaningful if accompanied by:
The Beach Boys "Smile" album bootleg. One track has the sound of Paul McCartney chewing on a carrot.
The first Guitar Vader album "Die Happy!" - a self-released 2 cassette tape set.
But hey, you can buy MP3.com copies online for $12-$16 each (or spring for amazon.jp). So I guess I can cross this one of my list if I get the mp3 (instead of original tape) version...
And even better: free legal MP3s of all of their songs! That's the best thing I've found online in weeks! Listen to something off the album "Wild At Honey" if you've never heard Guitar Vader before.
I picked up all their albums (except Die Happy was out of print) in Japan which took some hunting. I eventually got them at the store where GV distributed Die Happy! when they were just starting. Guitar Vader is the band with the biggest disparity between their fame (unknown) and their music (the greatest).
