Helen Beebee
I studied philosophy at the University of Warwick (1987-90), the University of Liverpool (1990-91) and King's College London (1991-96) where I wrote my Ph.D. thesis on the nature of causation. I have taught at Edinburgh and St Andrews Universities, and at University College London, and, after two years doing research at the Australian National University, I joined the Centre in 1999. My main research interest is in 20th century Metaphysics, and have published on causation, laws of nature, and free will. I am still primarily interested in causation. (Some philosophers think that causation is a kind of metaphysical "glue" that sticks events together. I'm fairly sure they're wrong about that.) I teach in metaphysics, philosophy of science, critical thinking and logic.
Sven Bernecker
I studied philosophy at the University of Munich (1985-1990), the University of California at Berkeley (1990-1992) and Stanford University (1992-1997). My Ph.D. thesis (Stanford 1997) addresses the question whether externalism about mental content is consistent with claims about the epistemically special access that subjects have to their current and conscious mental states. My Habilitation thesis (Munich 2002) attempts to say what it is that qualifies a mental state as a memory rather than, say, a belief or an imagination. Before coming to Manchester in 2003, I taught at the University of Munich, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, the University of Minnesota and Birkbeck College London. My main research interests lie in the fields of epistemology, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, Kant and German Idealism. My teaching normally includes epistemology, philosophy of language, metaphysics and philosophy of science.

Philosophy from http://humanknowledge.net ©Brian Holtz 2004-11-04 Since most effects seem caused rather than uncaused, and since the complexity of minds makes them hard to predict, minds appear to have at least weak free will. Weak free will is sufficient for assigning ethical responsibility to decision-making systems even in the face of complete determinism. Do minds have strong free will, or can their decisions in principle be inferred from sufficient knowledge of prior circumstances? Anti-materialists posit an immaterial soul or will that is free from both deterministic causality and random acausality. This notion violates the law of the excluded middle. Either the immaterial will is subject to (perhaps probabilistic but nonetheless causal) causes, or it is not. The same is true of material minds. The actions of an immaterial will could be said to be caused by its own internal causal processes, but the same can be said of material minds. 1.2.1.2. Philosophy / Epistemology / Philosophy Of Mind / Accidence of Mind Non-essential but perhaps inevitable aspects of mind include subjectivity, intentionality, and affect. Subjectivity Objectivity is independence from a point of view or perspective that is inherently private. Subjectivity is dependency on a point of view or perspective that is inherently private. Subjective experience is the private phenomenal aspect of experience, the vivid feeling of what an experience is "like". Subjective experience consists of complex associations among perceptions, and necessarily occurs in systems having such associations. If a subjective experience is not "like" anything (i.e. not associated with any other perceptions), it is not a subjective experience at all.

125. Constructivism: From Philosophy To Practice

The world presents itself to us, effectively

- Knowbotics Research ...learning theories or models are rarely developed to a point where they can be more or less operationalized.
Constructivism does not claim to have made earth-shaking inventions in the area of education; it merely claims to provide a solid conceptual basis for some of the things that, until now, inspired teachers had to do without theoretical foundation.
E. Von Glasersfeld (1995) S ocrates liked to work with students. His approach essentially consisted of leading them through a series of questions in order to promote critical thinking. On one occasion, the philosopher purportedly led a group of students to a difficult conclusion through his Socratic method. Socrates then pointed out that, since he had reported no facts, the students must have known the conclusion all along. Socrates is not generally associated with constructivist philosophy. Nonetheless, this anecdote highlights the fact that discussions which link epistemology and learning have been taking place for thousands of years. From the perspective of psychology, epistemology considers the genesis and the nature of knowledge and includes learning (Ernest, 1995). Knowledge, its nature and how we come to know, are essential considerations for constructivists. Von Glasersfeld describes constructivism as a "theory of knowledge with roots in philosophy, psychology and cybernetics" (p.162). In the constructivist perspective, knowledge is constructed by the individual through his interactions with his environment.

Such definitions have their uses, of course, what philosophy really is only is discovered by studying and doing it. As a first approximation, however, it may be said that philosophy is the critical examination of our most fundamental ideas about ourselves and the world. It asks questions such as the following: What is the nature and purpose of human life? How should we treat each other? What kind of society is best? What is our relation to nature?

Descartes' Epistemology
Meditations on First Philosophy
1.1 Analysis of Knowledge Famously, Descartes defines knowledge in terms of doubt. While distinguishing rigorous knowledge ( scientia ) and lesser grades of conviction ( persuasio ), Descartes writes: I distinguish the two as follows: there is conviction when there remains some reason which might lead us to doubt, but knowledge is conviction based on a reason so strong that it can never be shaken by any stronger reason. (1640 letter, AT 3:64-65) Elsewhere, while answering a challenge as to whether he succeeds in founding such knowledge, Descartes writes: But since I see that you are still stuck fast in the doubts which I put forward in the First Meditation, and which I thought I had very carefully removed in the succeeding Meditations, I shall now expound for a second time the basis on which it seems to me that all human certainty can be founded.
