    Genetic Epistemology
Source Genetic Epistemology , a series of lectures delivered by Piaget at Columbia University, Published by Columbia Univesity Press, translated by Eleanor Duckworth. First lecture reproduced here.
GENETIC EPISTEMOLOGY attempts to explain knowledge, and in particular scientific knowledge, on the basis of its history, its sociogenesis, and especially the psychological origins of the notions and operations upon which it is based. These notions and operations are drawn in large part from common sense, so that their origins can shed light on their significance as knowledge of a somewhat higher level. But genetic epistemology also takes into account, wherever possible, formalisation - in particular, logical formalisations applied to equilibrated thought structures and in certain cases to transformations from one level to another in the development of thought. The description that I have given of the nature of genetic epistemology runs into a major problem, namely, the traditional philosophical view of epistemology. For many philosophers and epistemologists, epistemology is the study of knowledge as it exists at the present moment; it is the analysis of knowledge for its own sake and within its own framework without regard for its development. For these persons, tracing the development of ideas or the development of operations may be of interest to historians or to psychologists but is of no direct concern to epistemologists. This is the major objection to the discipline of genetic epistemology, which I have outlined here.

    Description
Epistemology, the theory of knowledge, is at the center of mainstream philosophical efforts. The Oxford Handbook of Epistemology contains nineteen previously unpublished chapters on the theory of knowledge by today's leading figures in the field. These chapters function not only as a survey of key areas but also as original and interesting scholarship on vital topics currently of great interest. Written accessibly for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and professional philosophers, the Handbook explains the main ideas and problems of contemporary epistemology while avoiding overly technical detail. Contributing to contemporary debates over the analysis, sources, and limits of human knowledge, the Handbook tackles such central topics as the nature of epistemic justification, the Gettier problem, skepticism, epistemic rationality, the internalism-externalism debate, scientific knowledge

    http://www.ex.ac.uk/~PErnest/pome12/article1.htm
EPISTEMOLOGY, PHILOSOPHY AND PEDAGOGY OF MATHEMATICS Leone Burton The model proved to be remarkably robust when matched with how the seventy mathematicians talked about mathematics. But in analysing the very large data base, it became clear to me that I had to distinguish between the mathematicians' beliefs, that is what they think mathematics is, their practices, that is how they approach their research, and the seductive nature of their social positioning into what everybody knows . Finally, although I had not set out to discuss teaching and learning with them, inevitably there were aspects of our conversations which provided data on how they understand their roles as teachers and as learners and the data contain a lot of material which can be interpreted (with all the caveats necessary to that) to throw light on the links between epistemology and pedagogy. Mathematicians' beliefs I began the study with a conjecture that the socio-cultural system producing mathematicians is far stronger than differences in sex. I expected to find a high degree of convergence in the beliefs of the mathematicians I interviewed about the nature of the discipline. In fact, what I found was both. Great heterogeneity was disclosed in the many different beliefs about coming to know mathematics, including some, a minority of about 10%, who did not adopt an objectivist, positivist stance. Sex did not seem to feature as relevant to these differences. At the same time, whether espousing Platonism or formalism, there was a uniform philosophical commitment to an absolutist view of mathematical knowledge as fixed, certain and a-personal, a view of mathematics without the 's'. So, within this philosophical homogeneity, the mathematicians to whom I spoke adopted a breadth and diversity of epistemological positions. Some female participants said:

    Overview of the programs
Contents Last modified November 9, 2004 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The CU/Boulder Department of Philosophy has emerged over the last ten years as one of the nation's leading graduate programs. We have distinguished faculty in all the core areas of philosophy, with particular strengths in metaphysics and ethics. The Department is also one of a few elite programs in the country that balance strength in contemporary philosophy with a serious interest in history. Our faculty includes internationally recognized scholars that span the whole history of Western thought, from Plato and Aristotle, through the Middle Ages, to Kant and his successors. Boulder has one of the largest philosophy faculties in the country, and a correspondingly large graduate program, with separate tracks for MA and PhD students. Though the overall program is large, with more than 70 graduate students in all, the number of entering students in a given year remains small, averaging six new PhD students and 10-15 new MA students. All PhD students receive full-funding for a guaranteed five years, and routinely beyond that. MA students do not ordinarily receive funding, but many of our best PhD students have entered into that program through our MA program.
