Theodicy
Background: The New Consideration of Nature
The Renaissance, as an age of transition, was not conducive to the building of great philosophical systems. It contained, in germinal form, the directive ideas of modern times, but under the guise of the past. Thinkers preferred to write in ancient Latin, and the style of their writing is also archaic. Under this external aspect, which smacks of antiquity, are hidden the signs of the next age.

Epistemology
, knowledge, science, and , speech, thought, discourse). Epistemology, in a most general way, is that branch of philosophy which is concerned with the value of human knowledge The name epistemology, is of recent origin, but especially since the publication of Ferrier's "Institutes of Metaphysics: the Theory of Knowing and Being" (1854), it has come to be used currently instead of other terms, still sometimes met with, like applied logic, material or critical logic, critical or initial philosophy, etc. To the same part of philosophy the name criteriology is given by the authors of some Latin textbooks and by the Louvain School. The exact province of epistemology is as yet but imperfectly determined, the two main views corresponding to the two meanings of the Greek word Here we shall consider epistemology in its first and broader meaning, which is the usual one in English, as applying to the theory of knowledge, the German Erkenntnistheorie

Welcome to the Georgetown Philosophy Department The Georgetown University Philosophy Department is a vibrant community full of intellectual energy across an unusually broad range of philosophical traditions, from analytic to continental, topical to historical. The department offers both Ph.D. and M.A. programs. We expect our students, whatever their areas of specialization, to understand the systematic foundations of the positions they propose to defend and to be familiar with the origins of both the issues they address and the manner in which they intend to address them. It is for this reason that the graduate program has special requirements in logic, metaphysics, and epistemology and offers regularly scheduled courses on the major figures and periods in the history of this subject The faculty's broad diversity of styles and interests makes it impossible for someone to complete his or her course of studies knowing only one way of doing philosophy. We do not hope that our students will graduate without any established philosophical preferences. Instead we try to make sure that their approach is based on an informed comparison and that it is associated with the awareness that there is frequently more than one intelligent way to address a problem. The Georgetown Philosophical Review

Summary of the Transcendental Aesthetic and Transcendental Logic, as put forth in the Critique of Pure Reason.
http://www.london-oratory.org/philosophy/philosophies/epistemology/trancendental
source IEP With Kant's claim that the mind of the knower makes an active contribution to experience of objects before us, we are in a better position to understand transcendental idealism. Kant's arguments are designed to show the limitations of our knowledge. The Rationalists believed that we could possess metaphysical knowledge about God, souls, substance, and so; they believed such knowledge was transcendentally real. Kant argues, however, that we cannot have knowledge of the realm beyond the empirical. That is, transcendental knowledge is ideal, not real, for minds like ours. Kant identifies two a priori sources of these constraints. The mind has a receptive capacity, or the sensibility, and the mind possesses a conceptual capacity, or the understanding.
Another way to understand Kant's point here is that it is impossible for us to have any experience of objects that are not in time and space. Furthermore, space and time themselves cannot be perceived directly, so they must be the form by which experience of objects is had. A consciousness that apprehends objects directly, as they are in themselves and not by means of space and time, is possibleGod, Kant says, has a purely intuitive consciousnessbut our apprehension of objects is always mediated by the conditions of sensibility. Any discursive or concept using consciousness (A 230/B 283) like ours must apprehend objects as occupying a region of space and persisting for some duration of time.
