    PhD in Philosophy of Education
Students wishing to complete a PhD in Philosophy of Education should apply to the PhD program in History, Philosophy and Policy Studies in Education, indicating their intention to pursue the Philosophy of Education major in their application goals statement.  This program is primarily designed to prepare students for professional roles in university teaching and research, but students may also prepare for roles in development and consulting for governmental and non-governmental agencies. The major in Philosophy of Education may focus on ethics, epistemology, aesthetics, social and political philosophy, foundations of inquiry, feminist philosophy, continental philosophy, or historically important educational thinkers.  It is also expected that students will undertake philosophically relevant coursework in departments outside the School of Education, including the Departments of Philosophy, Religious Studies, and History and Philosophy of Science. Unconditional admission to the program is normally based upon the applicant’s meeting the following criteria:
  •  Successful completion of 12 semester hours of philosophy or philosophy of education at the undergraduate or graduate level prior to enrolment in the major.  A candidate who does not meet this requirement may be admitted conditionally, pending his or her successful completion of those credits in the first year of doctoral study.

Are there kinds of explanation? Do explanations correspond to domains of knowledge? Why do we seek explanations, and what do they accomplish? How central are causes to explanation? The essays draw on work in the history and philosophy of science, the philosophy of mind and language, the development of concepts in children, conceptual change in adults, and reasoning in human and artificial systems. They also introduce emerging perspectives on explanation from computer science, linguistics, and anthropology.

Scientific Method and Philosophy of Science
19 Aug 2005 18:50 Philosophy of science these days seems largely concerned with questions of method, justification and reliability - what do scientists do (and are they all doing the same thing? are they doing what they think they're doing?), and does it work, and if so why, and what exactly does it produce? There are other issues, too, like, do scientific theories really tell us about the world, or just give us tools for making predictions (and is there a difference there?). The whole reductionism emergence squabble falls under this discipline, too. But (so far as an outsider can judge), method is where most of the debate is these days. Of course, most scientists proceed in serene indifference to debates in methodology, and indeed all other aspects of the philosophy of science. What Medawar wrote thirty years ago and more is still true today: If the purpose of scientific methodology is to prescribe or expound a system of enquiry or even a code of practice for scientific behavior, then scientists seem to be able to get on very well without it. Most scientists receive no tuition in scientific method, but those who have been instructed perform no better as scientists than those who have not. Of what other branch of learning can it be said that it gives its proficients no advantage; that it need not be taught or, if taught, need not be learned? (Actually

    Moritz Schlick (1925)
Source The Emergence of Logical Empiricism (1996) publ. Garland Publishing Inc. The whole of Schlick selection for series is reproduced here. There is no longer any doubt nowadays, that theoretical philosophy has standing only in close connection with the sciences, whether it seeks in them a basis on which it attempts to build further, or whether they form for it merely the subject-matter of its own analyses, whereby it then makes individual inquiry into the first principles of knowledge. This is very much the case if, as I believe, philosophy can be nothing else whatever but the activity whereby we clarify all our concepts. And it is also beyond doubt that, of all the sciences, physics here stands at the forefront. Physics, that is, occupies an exceptional position, because in it two elements are united, which are only found separately in the other sciences: in the first place its exactness, the quantitative determinacy of its laws, whereby it differs from all other factual sciences, more particularly the historical sciences; and secondly the fact that it has as its subject-matter the real

RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS Alvin Goldman's principal research areas are epistemology, philosophy of mind, and cognitive science, and he has also written on metaphysics, political and legal theory, and philosophy of science. In epistemology he has championed the causal theory of knowing, the relevant alternatives approach to knowledge, and reliabilism about justification. Epistemology and Cognition (1986) explores connections between epistemology and cognitive science. Knowledge in a Social World (1999) articulates a truth-oriented conception of social epistemology and shows how the pursuit of truth can be enhanced by good interpersonal argumentation and well-designed technologies and institutions of public communication. These themes are applied to science, law, democracy, and education. Recent papers on epistemic internalism, a priori warrant, philosophical intuitions, and trust in experts are collected in Pathways to Knowledge (2002). He recently completed a book on the simulation theory of mindreading, entitled

    HUMANITAS
is an interdisciplinary journal dedicated to the invigoration of the humanities, including the social sciences properly understood. Current Issue Archives Editors Submissions ... Subscribe The journal seeks to foster among its readers and contributors a spirit of open inquiry, a willingness to subject cherished doctrines to challenge and look beyond conventional categories of thought. HUMANITAS explores issues of moral and social philosophy, epistemology, and aesthetics, and the relations among them, such as the moral and cultural conditions of knowledge. Favorable to an historical understanding of life, HUMANITAS explores the simultaneous tension and union between universality and particularity, and the interdependence and opposition of creativity and tradition. Fruitful new thinking will resist reductionism and will, for example, distinguish between contrasting strains within modernity and postmodernity.
