Registered Charity Number 1058958 Objectives:
The relief of persons with special needs in particular those who suffer from Epilepsy,
by the provision of Vagus Nerve Stimulators and by such other charitable means.
Epilepsy is the most common serious neurological condition in the world - affecting around 50 million people worldwide. Three-quarters of the 440,000 people with epilepsy in the UK have their seizures controlled and are able to work, drive and lead a fully active life. However, many people with epilepsy are still discriminated against due to ignorance about the condition. Epilepsy is the tendency to have recurrent seizures, caused by a disruption to the electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy can affect anyone, at any age and from any walk of life

They help persons with epilepsy, their families and other individuals overcome the problems associated with this condition. The Foundation has local chapters and will assist persons who wish to start a support group in their locality. They provide parent matching through their family support telephone network, matching support parents with new parents in a similar situation. EFA publishes a quarterly newsletter, Epigram , for which there is a small fee, and had brochures that explain their programs and services. They offer a new parent packet that contains information on resources, services, and programs. The Foundation maintains a lending library of books, articles, magazines, directories, and videos. They also have books for distribution on family support, and special health care related issues. EFA collects information on physicians and researchers who treat/study the condition and make this information available through their lending library. Epilepsy Unit
    Introduction
The Epilepsy Unit is situated in the grounds of the Western Infirmary in the west end of Glasgow. It is affiliated to the North Glasgow Hospitals University NHS Trust and to the University of Glasgow. Its aims and objectives are to provide a specialist clinical service for patients with suspected and established seizure disorders, to undertake research into the causation of epilepsy and its pharmacological management, to explore the tissue and cellular effects of new and established anticonvulsant drugs singly and in combination, and to train doctors, nurses and scientists in the clinical and basic aspects of the neuropharmacology and therapeutics of epilepsy. It contains patient and research laboratories, a cognitive function suite, an EEG unit, a secure facility for the storage of drugs, staff offices, and waiting and seminar rooms. The Epilepsy Unit is a member of the Joint Epilepsy Council for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
    Epilepsy Service
The epilepsy clinical service was set up at the Western Infirmary in 1984. Referrals have increased in number each year. Patients currently attending the service are aged 11 to 90. More than 80% come from their general practitioners with the majority of the remainder being tertiary referrals from other hospital clinics. Special programmes have been set up for teenagers, the elderly, first seizures, patients with refractory epilepsy and those with learning disabilities. A review service provides specialist assessment for patients who merit reconsideration of diagnosis, investigation or treatment. An epilepsy motherhood programme is also offered. Inpatients are accommodated in the wards of the University Division of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences. The clinical service fulfils all criteria recommended in the SIGN guideline ‘Diagnosis and Management of Epilepsy in Adults’.

Wes, who has epilepsy, spent most of his freshman year worried about having a seizure in front of his new classmates. Even though his teachers and friends knew of his condition - and Wes knew that he'd be OK if he did have a seizure - he was always concerned that he'd embarrass himself or scare his friends. What Is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a condition of the nervous system that affects 2.5 million Americans. More than 180,000 people are diagnosed with epilepsy every year. It can be scary watching someone have an epileptic seizure. The person may lose consciousness or seem unaware of what's going on, make involuntary motions (movements the person has no control over, such as jerking or thrashing one or more parts of the body), or experience unusual feelings or sensations (such as unexplained fear). After a seizure, he or she may feel tired, weak, or confused. People have seizures when the electrical signals in the brain misfire. The brain's normal electrical activity is disrupted by these overactive electrical discharges, causing a temporary communication problem between nerve cells. Just because someone has a seizure does not necessarily mean that person has epilepsy, though. Seizures can be triggered in anyone under certain conditions, such as life-threatening

Newsletter No 14 (28.07.2005) Parents' demo a great success!! Court Cases victory!!! Please read this carefully, as time is running out The GMC, the NHS and Dr. Holton There seems to be a lot of confusion between the complaints against Dr. Holton and the legal actions against the NHS. These are two separate courses of action. The first is to make a complaint about Dr. Holton to the GMC, with a view to getting him struck off. The second is to take legal action against the NHS to claim compensation for injury loss and damage suffered by an individual child. Please do both. Taking legal action against the NHS does not mean you have made a complaint against Dr. Holton. Reporting Dr. Holton to the GMC does not mean that you have started legal action for compensation against the NHS. Nothing is automatic. Unless you have contacted a Solicitor, you are not taking legal action. Do not wait for someone to contact you about compensation. You need to approach a Solicitor about it yourself. There is no group action. Just because you are a member of this group does not mean you are part of a legal case.

What are our research goals and why are they important?
Our goal is to identify genes that play a role in causing epilepsy. Identification of the genes that raise risk for epilepsy is potentially very important for early identification and treatment of susceptible individuals. It could also provide important basic information about the causes of epilepsy. This new information could lead to development of new treatments or strategies for prevention.

Abstracts/Annual Meeting Publications Full size image available below Epilepsy and GABA Years of research on the brain's message delivery system is paying off for patients with epilepsy. Scientists discovered that abnormal levels of chemicals such as GABA unbalance the system and may cause a seizure. Now they are developing new treatments that promote harmony in the message delivery system and efficiently ward off seizures. When a chemical thunderstorm churns in the brain, messages normally delivered with precision from one cell to the next gush out of control. This flood of nerve cell chatter may trigger parts of your body to contract rapidly, your mouth to salivate, a feeling of "deja vu" and even a total blackout a seizure.
For years scientists have been analyzing the brain's message delivery system in order to find ways to control seizures. People who experience repeated seizures suffer from epilepsy. This ailment is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders, afflicting approximately one percent of Americans about 2.5 million people. Seizures can occur in healthy children, adults and the elderly as well as those with other disorders such as a brain injury.
Traditional medications are not successful for all patients and carry numerous side effects. Now after a 15-year drought, several new epilepsy drugs are close to approval in the United States. Many of these recent developments stem from the discovery of the chemical GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) in 1950.
