Epilepsy: Taming the Seizures, Dispelling the Myths
by Audrey T. Hingley George Thomas was 21 years old when his life changed: As he stood in his girlfriend's yard, he was hit by a car. After spending a week in the hospital, he was released. But over the next five years, the athletic Thomas began experiencing dizzy spells. At first he shrugged them off as a result of over-exercise or bad diet. "Then one day I crashed right out of the shower," Thomas recalls. "After that I had frequent grand mal seizures." The diagnosis was epilepsy, a disease with myriad causes, one of which is the kind of head injury Thomas experienced. The seizures totally changed his active, athletic lifestyle. "I couldn't ride my bike, I was too dizzy," says Thomas, a crosscountry cyclist. "My vision stunk. I had my driver's license taken away; when I had to write a check, people would ask why a guy in his mid20s didn't have a license. The word epilepsy was a stigma." Thomas tried a variety of anticonvulsant medications, taking up to 16 pills a day at one point. One day, as his wife drove the newly married Thomas to a doctor's appointment, he had a terrible seizure. He couldn't move, and he threw up all over himself.

Charles Dickens made history as an author. Vincent van Gogh painted masterpieces that sell for millions of dollars. Cyclist Marion Clignet won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games. What do these people have in common? Besides being famous and successful, each of them has (or had) a condition called epilepsy. What Is Epilepsy?
It's a strange word, isn't it? Epilepsy comes from a Greek word meaning "to hold or seize," and people who have epilepsy have seizures. You might also hear a seizure called a convulsion, fit, or spell. Seizures happen when there is unusual electrical activity in the brain . Your brain cells are constantly sending out electrical signals that travel along nerves to the rest of the body. These signals tell the muscles to move. During a seizure, a person's muscles tighten and relax rapidly or stop moving completely. Seizures come on suddenly, and people who have them cannot control their muscles while they are having a seizure. If too many brain cells are sending signals at the same time, it causes an overload and a person may pass out and shake all over. People who have epilepsy may have seizures only once in a while or as frequently as every day. What's a Seizure?

What is it like?
Here's a typical story: "I get the strangest feeling—most of it can't be put into words. The whole world suddenly seems more real at first. It's as though everything becomes crystal clear. Then I feel as if I'm here but not here, kind of like being in a dream. It's as if I've lived through this exact moment many times before. I hear what people say, but they don't make sense. I know not to talk during the episode, since I just say foolish things. Sometimes I think I'm talking but later people tell me that I didn't say anything. The whole thing lasts a minute or two." The features of seizures beginning in the temporal lobe can be extremely varied, but certain patterns are common. There may be a mixture of different feelings, emotions, thoughts, and experiences, which may be familiar or completely foreign. In some cases, a series of old memories resurfaces. In others, the person may feel as if everything—including home and family—appears strange. Hallucinations of voices, music, people, smells, or tastes may occur. These features are called “auras” or “warnings.” They may last for just a few seconds, or may continue as long as a minute or two. Experiences during temporal lobe seizures vary in intensity and quality. Sometimes the seizures are so mild that the person barely notices. In other cases, the person may be consumed with fright, intellectual fascination, or even pleasure.
