(updated 9/8/05) Hello Everyone!
The Agenda for the 2005 Norfma Conference has been posted. It's been difficult finalizing the agenda due to the devastation from Katrina. Many presenters had to cancel in order to participate in all there is to due down there. Because of this, we will not have two different tracks this year - all presentations have been incorporated into one track.
The field trip has also been changed and has been incorporated into the Wednesday afternoon agenda and is now free for anyone who would like to attend. We need a head count so we have room on the bus so please let us know by Tuesday noon. If you already signed up and paid the $25, you will be refunded that amount.

Eutrophication
Eutrophication poses a significant risk to the health of the Baltic Sea. It occurs when excessive nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, both of which are commonly used fertilizers, become overly abundant in water. These chemicals “feed” microscopic organisms, particularly algae, causing massive “blooms” often dozens of kilometers wide. The algae's growth consumes most of the oxygen in the water, resulting in anoxia and the death of most other plant and animal species. The algae blooms also make the water murky, reducing light transmission, which often kills seabed grasses and other plants. In the Baltic Sea, eutrophication can be simplified in to two broad categories: phosphorus, a mainly “point source” pollutant originating primarily from inadequate municipal solid and waste water treatment and disposal; and nitrogen, a largely “non-point source” pollutant created by agricultural runoff.

    ELP's Mission The Environmental Leadership Program seeks to transform public understanding of environmental issues by training and supporting a diverse network of visionary, action-oriented emerging leaders. ELP's primary goal is to train and support the next generation of environmental leaders both within and beyond its flagship national initiative, the ELP Fellowship. We define emerging leaders as newly established environmental practitioners with fewer than 10 years of experience in the field. ELP's Regional Networks enable us to build on our national fellowship to serve a broader constituency of emerging environmental leaders and spark new ideas and solutions to pressing environmental problems in regions across the country. Recognizing that every sector plays a critical role in environmental progress, ELP recruits participants for its programs from across the field, including nonprofits, academia, government, and the private sector. ELP also strives to create a community comprised of individuals from different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and to work with emerging leaders who can strengthen partnerships with public health, religious, labor, and civil rights organizations. Nearly fifty percent of the ELP fellows are people of color. They live and work in all regions of the continental United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Alaska. top PROJECT DETAILS In 2004, ELP brought its unique approach to leadership development to the Delaware Valley, and expanded the ELP community, by launching the ELP Philadelphia Regional Network. The geographic scope of the Philadelphia Regional Network includes the following counties: PA Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia County; NJ Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, or Mercer County; DE Kent, Sussex or New Castle County.

SDE Collaborating Center Regional Issues and Challenges The occupational and environmental epidemiology in SEAR needs strengthening to provide a uniform tool for combatting the high  prevalence of hazards in the work place and the environment. These hazards range from biological, chemical and physical ones and are concentrated in the occupational settings or amplified during the process of development and industrialization. With a work force of ~750 million persons and a steady increase of development projects in SEAR, member countries do not have comprehensive national plans on occupational health and have limited access to norms, guidelines, protocols and  technologies for mitigation of occupational and environmental risks. Health impact assessment (HIA) is a tool that has emerged to identify those activities and policies likely to have major impacts on the health of a population, but it is not adequately used in countries of this Region The theme of this program is to build capacity in occupational and environmental epidemiology for a more comprehensive risk assessment and risk management strategy. var strPageDay="16"; var strPageMonth="11,Nov,November"; var strPageYear="04,2004";

    Southeast Conference has undertaken an initiative to form a workgroup to seek solutions to the increasingly expensive solid waste disposal problems throughout the region. We will work with other groups to collect various studies and data together, to evaluate current methods, and to conceptualize ways to consolidate, recycle and dispose of wastes. We will explore the state of the art in waste management, including incineration, and consider sites for a regional landfill.

    Cruise Ship Issues
    In the wake of recent incidents relating to pollution from the many large cruise ships operating in our region, the Conference participated in a series of meetings and workgroups. The purpose was to try and find a way to bring the industry, regulators and the concerned public into agreement on policies, methods, and compliance measures to insure that the ships operate in an environmentally responsible manner. We will continue to monitor this process to help balance the increasingly significant economic benefit of the cruise industry business in the region, with the potential environmental impacts of the growth in the business.

Bounded on the west by the shores of the Black Sea and in the east by the Caspian Sea, the region also includes Moldova and the Caucasus countries. The fascinating area hosts the world's largest low-tide intercontinental Sea (the Black Sea), some of the world's richest oil reserves in the Caspian Sea, and hundreds of endemic species of flora and fauna throughout. Recognizing opportunities for a regional approach to maintaining the region's ecological health is a primary function of the new Environmental Office.
