Contact Environmental Office Baltic Sea Regional Issues Eutrophication Oil Spills Invasive Species Eutrophication Eutrophication poses a significant risk to the health of the Baltic Sea. It occurs when excessive nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, both of which are commonly used fertilizers, become overly abundant in water. These chemicals “feed” microscopic organisms, particularly algae, causing massive “blooms” often dozens of kilometers wide. The algae's growth consumes most of the oxygen in the water, resulting in anoxia and the death of most other plant and animal species. The algae blooms also make the water murky, reducing light transmission, which often kills seabed grasses and other plants. In the Baltic Sea, eutrophication can be simplified in to two broad categories: phosphorus, a mainly “point source” pollutant originating primarily from inadequate municipal solid and waste water treatment and disposal; and nitrogen, a largely “non-point source” pollutant created by agricultural runoff.
