It seeks to quantify the impact of contaminants in the human environment, and to address human impacts on the natural environment itself. We recognize that scientific issues related to environmental health and human welfare are inherently interdisciplinary and, therefore, we welcome articles that cover the entire spectrum of sources, pathways, sinks and interactions between environmental pollutants, whether chemical, biological or physical. The primary criteria for publication are scientific quality and environmental significance. Progress in Environmental Science now forms the reviews section of Environment International , presenting state-of-the-science reviews of major themes within the field of environmental science, such as those related to environmental risks and hazards, environmental pollution, waste disposal and the modelling of environmental impacts.

My research group is interested in the cardiorespiratory system from the perspective of its evolutionary design, its control and how it responds to environmental perturbations. The primary focus is with the fish cardiorespiratory system, along with occasional amphibian and reptilian studies. Work with salmonids represents the main, but by no means the exclusive, thrust of the research. Fishes are an especially valuable and interesting research organisms. Foremost, they are diverse, with over 20,000 species, and so collectively they display a phenomenal range of form and function, no doubt because of the very diverse niches they occupy. Some fish live in Antarctic seas at -1.9 o C, while tropical intertidal fish experience temperatures approaching 40 o C. Most fish breathe water, but some breathe air as well. Some fish are extremely sensitive to aquatic pollutants, and yet others are more tolerant. Discovering the mechanisms that underlie these differences is the fascinating challenge for my research group. Currently there are a number of research emphases.

Ron was Wishtoyo's very first member, and continues to support us and assist generously with many tasks. Mainly, this past year Ron has been extremely helpful with maintenance of the Chris Craft boat donated to our organization at the end of 2004. He has taught us many things and shared a lot of responsibility, without ever having been asked. Ron is continually offering assistance and providing us with detailed, written reports about various issues dealing with the boat as well as talking to community members about our projects and goals, and gaining more support and new members for our organization.

Japan has been in the forefront of sound practices in minimizing the destructive impacts of disasters, with a comprehensive system of preparedness and response in place at the national, prefectural and local levels, and with responsibilities mapped to respond to disaster situations. This UNEP study on the recent Tokage Typhoon (No. 23 of 2004) is the first in a series of publications that helps demonstrate the preparedness measures in place in Japan, and provide valuable lessons for mitigation and management in other countries facing similar disasters.
