More on Climate Control in Museums
The following three articles and announcement address the issue of climate control guidelines in museums. The articles by the CAL group and Steven Weintraub were solicited by the Newsletter. Barbara Appelbaum's is a slightly revised version of her posting on the Conservation DistList on CoOL. The CAL announcement was likewise first posted on the DistList. Four articles on the same subject appeared in the January, 1995 issue of the Newsletter (vol.17, no.1, pp. 19-28) It seems that a sentence from the introduction to those articles remains true today "This is, obviously, a subject of great concern to conservation and one about which thoughtful professionals have not reached a consensus."
A Discussion of Research on the Effects of Temperature and Relative Humidity on Museum Objects
by Charles S. Tumosa, Marion F. Mecklenburg, David Erhardt, and Mark H. McCormick-Goodhart Research into the effects of environment (RH and temperature) on materials and structures can be readily divided into three fundamental areas: biological, chemical, and structural. Biological and chemical effects on materials have been studied in great detail since the 19th century. The degradation of proteins, carbohydrates, and other organic materials has been of interest with regard to both the deterioration of materials and industrial processes. That chemical changes are only part of the picture is apparent if one considers that chemically wood and sawdust are equivalent. Clearly structural (mechanical) considerations need to be addressed in defining cultural objects.

http://www.sudanembassy.org/contemporarylooks/Environment.htm
Home (In a country endowed with a lot of species, many climatic regions, and archaeological cites, environment becomes a top concern of the state - a full - fledged ministry for Environment is launched to enhance tourism) Environment and Tourism Sector: Introduction: Sudan enjoys various tourist resources due to the availability of enormous natural capabilities. It is regarded as one of the richest African countries in wildlife, birds and Nile natural scenery which encourages tourism investment. The climate in Sudan is characterized by varied climatic conditions which are moderate all the year round in the Red Sea area especially in the highlands such as Erkwiet Summer Resort. The special concern being attached to the promotion of tourism in Sudan is necessitated by many factors represented in the necessity of activating domestic internal tourism, notably among the youths to familiarize with their country. Tourism activity also makes youths realize the power of Almighty Allah, thus deepening their faith in Him. It as well inculcates them with love for their country and is further considered an important economic resource as it brings foreign currency to the country. Tourism also promotes acquaintance and friendly relations with other people who are attracted to our country by its vast tourist resources. In this way, tourism plays two key roles. First it boosts Sudan's good image to the outside world, reflecting the good nature of its people, its civilization, its popular heritage and its arts. Secondly, it contributes to the boosting of popular diplomacy of the country.

95. Field Trial II
An environmental monitoring program involves much more than placing monitors and University of South Florida Contemporary Arts Museum, Tampa, FL
http://www.imagepermanenceinstitute.org/sub_pages/8page21a.htm
Background: Field Trial I
For the last ten years the Image Permanence Institute has been working to develop better ways to assess and manage collection storage environments in museums, libraries, and archives. With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, separate projects have resulted in new hardware for data gathering, software for data analysis, and step-by-step procedures to simultaneously improve collection longevity and minimize operating costs.
  • An environmental monitoring program involves much more than placing monitors and uploading data.
Many institutions need to develop monitoring programs but do not have the staff, the expertise, or the budget to implement one.
Service providers can help smaller institutions document and analyze their environmental conditions in a much more efficient manner than was previously possible.
Field Trial II: Training and Implementation for Effective Use of Environment in Collections Preservation
IPI applied for and received a grant from NEH to apply the benefits of all of the preceding research by guiding dozens of institutions with significant humanities collections through education and advanced training in the use of the PEM and Climate Notebook.

One hundred and eighty soil samples from different parts of Gulbarga region were collected to isolate and identify the pigmented microorganisms and their importance to the biotechnological field. The samples were collected during the period of May to July 2004. A total of 30 pigmented organisms were screened, probably these are of Actinomycetes, mainly Streptomyces from different locations, among them 9 strains have show very good enzymatic activity (Amylases, Protease, Cellulase) at the wide range of pH.(6-13) The Sphingidae of Southeast-Asia
Introduction
The biologically and geographically diverse region lying between tropical oriental Asia and Australia has been the site of fruitful specimen collection and biological investigation since A. R. Wallace's travels in "The Malay Archipelago" (1869). Yet, while there is a wealth of biogeographical information for some taxa (notably birds and mammals), much of the available data on insects is scattered in various museums and private collections and thus not readily accessible. For some of the more popular groups (e.g. some lepidopteran taxa) there are checklists for some countries, islands or regions, but no comprehensive overview of the region.
