June 10 – July 2, 2001 Eugene G. Maurakis, Ph.D., Expedition Director UR study abroad program in Greece constitutes two courses over a 22-day period (one for biology/environmental science majors, and one for non-majors biology students):
a. Biology/Environmental Science Majors: Course title, Environmental-Freshwater Fish Biodiversity and Biogeography in Greece (BIO 331; 4-hr credit). This course is an interactive, hands-on course (lectures and field investigations) that examines ecology of freshwater fish faunas and relationships between biodiversity, biogeography, and anthropogenic environmental effects. Students will develop a baseline data set for aquatic biodiversity inventories, determine biogeographic relationships of southern Balkan river drainages, and their application to natural resource management and environmental ethics. b. Non-biology majors: Course title: Experiencing Science (BIO-131; 3-hr credit). This course uses interactive, hands-on learning approaches in field studies and lectures to develop students skills and understanding science as a process (scientific methods) with experiences in making observations and collections, record keeping, hypothesis formulation and testing, data analysis, and reaching conclusions.
Students not only will learn information in their coursework, but will make significant contributions to the understanding of the freshwater fish biodiversity in Greece, which can be applied to management plans of ecosystems in the region. Information generated by students will be publishable. Overall, the UR Summer Environmental Studies Program in Greece will heighten students’ knowledge and understanding of the complex relationships between various disciplines (environmental, geographic, biological, economic, political, and social) that have shaped the environmental conditions in Greece and Europe.

Action Bioscience Actionbioscience.org is a web site created by Bioscience Productions, Inc, which was founded in 1998 and is a non-commercial, educational organisation. Their objectives are to motivate the public to play an active role in bioscience education; to advance formal and informal bioscience education, and to encourage students to pursue studies in the biosciences. These aims are met through the provision of articles written by scientists, science educators and science students on issues related to seven biological challenges: environment, biodiversity, human genome, biotechnology, evolution, new frontiers and biology education. The web site's intended audience is the concerned public, educators, students and science professionals. The Web site also provides educators with original lessons and resource to enchance bioscience teaching. Human gene mapping Genetically modified foods Gene therapy Evolution (Biology) ... Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Australian Museum Eureka Prizes were initiated in 1990. They aim to "raise the profile of science in the community by acknowledging and rewarding outstanding achievements in Australian science and in the promotion of science". The prizes are a partnership between the Federal and NSW State Government and a range of educational institutions and private sector organisations and companies. The Web Site provides details of past winners with information on the 2002 awards. There are a number of awards covering disciplines such as teaching, research and journalism.

Environmental sustainability
"There's no point in preserving even the most fantastic exhibit, if you are trashing the environment to do so" - Flemmich Webb, editor of Environment Business Magazine , in Museums Journal , December 2003. Archivists are responsible for preserving our cultural heritage for future generations. Archivists can equally play a role in preserving our environment. The transport and storage of archival materials - and the equipment and consumables in offices and search rooms - have an impact on the environment. But there are ways in which we can save energy, reduce pollution and reduce waste. Sustainable development is on the government agenda, with the establishment of a special commission in 2000. The DfES and Hefce are also addressing environmental issues. Even primary schools are developing their own eco-codes "Climate change is the most severe problem we are facing today, more serious than the threat of terrorism." - Sir David King, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK government, in Science vol

NEW ENGLAND MUSEUMS JOIN FORCES TO BUILD ECOLOGY EXHIBITS
Jane's Trust awards grant to seed important collaborative effort
Over the next four years, the grant will fund the development of five innovative traveling exhibits about key topics related to the New England environment. Founding members of the Environmental Exhibit Collaborative include the EcoTarium, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, New Hampshire, and the ECHO at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont. The Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont, is also involved in the regional project, playing an advisory role. Working together, members will develop conceptual ideas; share design, fabrication, and staff resources; and exchange collections and expertise to create high-quality interactive exhibits designed expressly for small and mid-sized museums. Each exhibit will be about 1,200 square feet in size and will be displayed at each of the museums for up to six months. In addition, exhibits will be designed to tour and will be available to travel to other museums, nature centers and aquariums in the region. New England is fortunate to have a rich array of small and mid-sized museums that play unique roles in their communities. These institutions work with schools, provide a place for families to take part in fun and educational family experiences and offer opportunities for lifelong learning.

ECOTARIUM AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS IMLS GRANT TO SUPPORT TRAVELING EXHIBIT COLLABORATIVE In December 2003, the formation of the Environmental Exhibits Collaborative was supported with a grant from Jane's Trust to develop five exhibits over the next four years. The first of these exhibits, Turtle Travels, will open at the EcoTarium in February 2005. The exhibit is currently in development. The IMLS funds will allow the Collaborative to conduct visitor research to determine the most compelling topics and approaches for the exhibits being developed, to explore marketing ideas, conduct visitor research to assess the effectiveness of the traveling exhibits in attracting an audience, and to develop and implement marketing materials and strategies for use by members of the collaborative and other museums that might rent the exhibits in the future. "The EcoTarium and its partners are notonly working together to fill a niche in the museum community, but also creatively working to provide environmental science exhibits that engage families and individuals in learning about the region," said EcoTarium Executive Director Laura H. Myers. "We are thrilled that the IMLS has recognized our initiative with this important national support." "Museums for America grants invest not only in museums, but in the people and the communities they serve," said Dr. Robert S. Martin, Director of the Institute. "These grants will advance these institutions' role as trusted resources that create and sustain a nation of learners."

This study is intended primarily as a practical guide to aid in the prevention and basic treatment of mold growth in tropical climates where library-wide environmental control is not always possible, and mold is a recurring problem. Even in more temperate climates, outbreaks of mold may occur as a result of flooding or localized environmental control problems. Increased concern over the toxicity of many of the standard fumigants has led libraries and museums to re-examine existing policies which rely primarily on chemical treatment of mold outbreaks. It is increasingly apparent that more attention must be given to prevention and alternate treatments in order to protect not only collections, but staff and patrons as well. To be concerned with the preservation of materials in tropical climates is to be concerned with the study of: - Climate.
- The effects of that climate on specific materials.
- The widest possible range of options for modifying the environment.

While much environmental art, including many works on this page, remains traditional or mainstream in focus, we hope to use this site increasingly to provide links to sites on environmental justice eco-art which takes on issues of race, class, gender and eco-colonialism in the unequal distribution of environmental problems and benefits within the U.S. and around the globe. We also hope to feature more examples of eco-activist art, art that actually changes the environment for the better, rather than just "representing" it. Suggestions of further examples of such art are welcome. FEATURED SITE: GENERAL SITES
