The state of environmental monitoring in museums, libraries and archives
Helen Cox, Environmental and Conservation Consultant
1. Introduction In October 2003, London Museums, Archives and Libraries (LMAL)[1], in conjunction with the National Preservation Office (NPO) hosted the second in a series of heavily over-subscribed cross-sector workshops on 'Preservation for access: managing paper-based collections in museums, libraries and archives'. A third workshop was hosted by the NPO and held at the British Library in September 2004. To support the presentations I delivered on Environmental Monitoring, I have conducted simple surveys among delegates at these seminars to try and determine the extent of 'environmental awareness' across the heritage domains. These have generated some interesting results, discussed below. 2. The 2003 Survey

And let us also accept that, absent the talents of the Oracle of Delphi, any person or organization is unlikely to be able to make meaningful predictions that are helpful for charting directions for an indefinable future. Profound as this was, the introduction of shared cataloging was a revolution inside the walls of the library. The immediate effect on the users of libraries was not large, especially before the introduction of automated interlibrary loan (another inspired linking of technology with collaboration). The use of highly structured, standardized metadata to organize content and inventory organizational assets did not migrate much beyond the library. Indeed, it did not migrate in any significant way into the sister organizations of archives and museums. Neuromancer In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee developed a program that allowed a real world matrix to develop. He called it the WorldWideWeb.

These institutions have the ability to lobby, inform and advise governments on relevant issues, while at the same time educating the public and implementing activities at the grassroots level. Effective distribution of available information has been a key problem in this battle. However, their ability to define and articulate major concepts give museums the potential for effective input at the level of stakeholder involvement in environmental protection. Caribbean museums can also be effective facilitators to the process of building consensus on sustainability, based on a commitment to transparency and inclusiveness. Regional institutions can also provide knowledge, and deliver expertise (including the cultural and social permutations, and accessibility in its broadest context). In effect, engendering a participatory approach to managing the environment. Next...

After more than three decades of air quality regulation in the U.S., the easiest and least expensive pollution reductions may have already been achieved. In this increasingly challenging field, BBC works with regulators, regulated industries, and environmental interests to help assess new air quality improvement strategies. Our work ranges from investigating impacts of new regulations on small businesses in the Los Angeles Basin to examining the merits of incentive-based approaches in the Southern Appalachian region. Our goal is to bring more clarity to potentially contentious issues through sound, objective research. BBC's work varies from benefit-cost and impact assessments to development of analytical tools for clients' ongoing use. We also helped develop one of the first metropolitan visibility indices based on scientific research into the public's perceptions and preferences. Visit our on-line Library for copies of executive summaries or other data from our most-requested studies.
