This Conference is for You!
If you are involved in the practical side of geology or civil or environmental engineering, you will certainly encounter issues relating to karst terrane. This is the conference that addresses those issues!
Nearly every state has some karst areas: from sinkholes in Florida to the big springs of Missouri; from the marble karst of California to contamination in karstic aquifers hidden by glacial debris in the Northeast, karst has a significant impact.
If you are a civil or environmental engineer; an engineering-, environmental-, or hydro-geologist; a planning, zoning, public works, DOT or other governmental employee, and you are involved in planning, designing and/or regulating construction and development or protecting the environment, you will benefit from attending this conference.
Over the more than twenty years since the First Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes this conference series has become the ?handbook? for geologists and engineers working in karst. If you are new to the subject, one of the Short Courses presented prior to the meeting can help provide a firm foundation so that you can benefit from the papers presented by your peers. The preconference Field Trip will give you a chance to see the practical side of the karst of Texas and the famous Edwards Aquifer, led by those who study it daily. And finally, the papers - all presented in general session so you don?t have to miss a single one - will keep you current with the state-of-practice in investigating and dealing with karst problems, not only in the U.S. but also from world-wide experience.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Program at The University of Alabama is a broad based program with coverage in many different specialty areas. Our graduates are planners, designers, and builders of bridges, buildings, water treatment plants, transmission towers and many other types of projects. It is a multi-faceted engineering profession with many technical specialties. Some of the various functions include: Structural Engineering
Structural engineers plan and design all types of projects, including buildings, bridges, dams, power plants, supports for equipment, special structures for offshore projects, space programs, transmission towers, telescopes, and many other kinds of projects. Structural engineers analyze the forces that a structure must resist (its own weight, wind forces, temperature forces, earthquake forces, etc.) and develop the combination of appropriate materials (steel, concrete, plastic, timber, etc.). Where concrete, steel, aluminum or other materials are required to carry a load, structural engineers do the planning and design and visit the construction site to make sure the work is done properly. Structural engineers usually work with a team that includes architects, mechanical and electrical engineers, contractors, owners of the project, bankers, lawyers, and officials of local government.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Davis offers a unique opportunity for advanced education in: 1) environmental quality monitoring and modeling, 2) water and wastewater treatment processes, 3) optimization of water distribution systems, 4) hazardous and solid waste management, 5) public health risk assessment, and 6) natural treatment systems leading to the degrees of Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Engineering. Non-thesis MS degrees carefully planned with a faculty advisor can usually be completed in 1 year. Interdisciplinary problems, involving such issues as waste disposal, non-point source emissions, water / air pollution, and climate change are among the most challenging problems an engineer can face. Through training in the underlying physical, chemical, and biological principles, design of mitigation approaches, and optimal management of resources, students learn to recognize attainable alternatives and their consequences in terms of environmental quality. The environmental programs are strongly research oriented. Evaluations of various physical, chemical, and biological processes are carried out in state-of-the art laboratories and at numerous field sites. Advanced monitoring studies for water and air quality are conducted in many locations throughout California, the United States, and the world. The Department has strong affiliations with a number of research centers including the California Primate Research Center, the Institute for Toxicology and Environmental Health, Crocker Nuclear Laboratory, and the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratories. Students often receive financial support through research projects, fellowships, and Department funds.
